Editors note: This is a weekly column highlighting our ski coaches from around the country… including elite coaches, college coaches, high school coaches, volunteer coaches, and learn-to-ski coaches. This is an effort to sample a diverse group of coaches and recognize the people who are the backbone of today’s skiers. If you would like to nominate a coach for an interview, please email robertwhitney99@hotmail.com . Please give coaches name, , email, phone, and a small paragraph describing the nominee. The more diverse, the better.
Fredrick Landstedt is the Head Ski Coach for the University of New Mexico Lobos. Originally from Sweden, he came to the US years ago to ski for UNM, and never left! Fredrik shares some of his thoughts, ideas, and stories with Rob Whitney, which is being passed along to the readers of Fasterskier.com.
in College (a 4th place at NCAA's), I liked the lifestyle, the incredible nice and sunny weather. I also met my wife, Brenda, after only one month at UNM. We have now been married for 18 years and have 3 boys.

2. Describe you coaching philosophy/style?

Coaching college is very different from coaching full-time skiers. I have no doubt that you can train close to as many hours, and go for it 100% as a skier, and still be in college. However, it’s imperative to have a really good plan that will fit your school schedule as well as your racing schedule. That is why I think the most important thing to consider for an athlete that is trying to decide where to go to school is who the coach is and how much experience the coach has dealing with college skiers. The coach must be able to communicate very well with the athletes and consider the other stress elements that a college skier has in there schedule. A college skier might get 4 hours of sleep because of big tests or have a very stressful week of school. As a coach you need to know this so that you do not plan a very hard training week at the same time. You also have to be able to “read” the athletes very well so that you can tell when they are stressed out and need to back off a little bit.

Having said that, I am a little bit of an old school coach using the training principles that I grew up with in Sweden combined with all the new elements of coaching and training that I stay updated on. Here at UNM, all the training sessions are mandatory and we have scheduled practices 5-6 days per week. Sometimes we have 2 sessions per day. I also schedule individual sessions for the athletes depending on what their needs are and their training background. We do strength in the weight room and on rollerskis 3 times per week, usually have one level 3 and one level 4 interval session every week, except the weeks surrounding interval blocks. Dry land training is very good around here. We vary the rollerski sessions between 4-5 different roads and bike paths and do lots of bounding in the foothills or out in the sandhills.

I also do video and specific technique sessions individually from the start of the fall training. My philosophy is that having an efficient technique is very important but it will never make up for being in great physical shape.

3. What's you take on kids taking time off after high school to pursue skiing?

I encourage kids to take a year or two off after high school if they have a great alternative and a program to join that can improve their skiing. However, I have seen some skiers, that were offered scholarships, decline it and take a year off (training in Norway, for example), and have weak results and never be offered the same scholarship again. The reality is that in this country we live in, you have to get a college education. I think it is better for young skiers to go to a good college ski program, train and race as much as they can during these 4 years, get the degree, and then decide if they want to go full-time for skiing. The important part here is that they should be very careful in choosing the college ski program that they join. I believe that a talented young skier can come here to UNM (and to a few other college teams) and get on a plan that will
be very close to a ski team training plan as far as number of hours and types of sessions. It is true that during the college time, the skier will most likely race in fewer races and definitely fewer international races. However, I believe that this skier can graduate after 4 years and within 2 years of full-time skiing be at the same level as someone that spends all these years skiing. The difference is, this athlete has a degree and can now pursue skiing fully without having to think about when they have to go back to college or how long should they keep trying to be a top International racer before they have to go to college. One fact is that most of the top International racers are close to 30 years old and a skier does not reach his peak until after turning 30. With a degree in hand it is definitely easier to keep racing up to this age.
