This weekend’s Alberta Cup in Canmore, Alberta, hosted a distance skate and a classic sprint.  The fastest Canadian racers who were not already on the World Cup competed, including the racers who had placed in the top spots at the West Yellowstone Supertours.

Dasha Gaiazova and Shayla Swanson, who took first and third at the West Yellowstone sprints,  finished first and second at Canmore, with Andrea Dupont placing 3rd.

In the men’s sprint, Phil Widmer topped the results.  Frédéric Touchette and Jess Cockney rounded out the podium.  Stefan Kuhn, Drew Goldsack, and Sean Crooks, all top 6 at the West Yellowstone Sprints, came in 4th through 6th, respectively.

The mass start distance skate races saw a whole new set of names on the podium, as many of the top competitors from the day before did not start the race.

In the women’s race, Rhonda Jewett won with a commanding lead of 1:13 over Eva Szabo.  Megan McTavish, in third, was another 33.5 seconds back.

The men also raced 8km and the top finisher, Pate Neumann, won by 16 seconds over second place Mike Argue.  Brian McKeever, in third, was just 3 seconds behind Argue.

Although the field was pretty deep, this was an Alberta Cup, not a Nor-Am. The first Canadian Nor-Am isn’t until Saturday, December 12.

I stand corrected – AGAIN. Thank you very much Rhonda. I have fixed it. And sorry Drew, I just noticed I had you written as “Dave”. Yikes. I must have been half asleep when I first posted this. . . .
