  • XC Ski Trail Work Day A Huge Success In St. Croix Falls, WI!

    A beautiful afternoon was enjoyed by volunteers working to do final prep on St. Croix Falls’ new XC Ski Trails – to be groomed & maintained THIS WINTER.

    As announced last week on CyclovaXC.com, there will be a new professionally groomed XC ski trail in St. Croix Falls this winter – on the Wert Nature Preserve property.  HERE is a preliminary GPS map of the trail system (thanks Ben!).  

    On Saturday afternoon, we had a trail work day to prepare this 5.5k trail system for the ski season – and we’re thrilled to announce that the trail work day was a resounding success!

    The work day started at 2PM at Cyclova XC.  We reviewed the specifics on the trail system (where, when, how, etc), reviewed the GPS map of the trail system, and talked about goals for the afternoon.  After about a 20 minute preview & pep talk, we caravanned to the trail head (at the north end of Day Road in St. Croix Falls).  

    As we arrived at the trail head, volunteer superstar Steve Litzkow was wrapping up the mowing of the upper meadow field area (which will be the beginner loop).  Huge thank you to Steve for volunteering his time, resources, and enthusiasm!
    Steve the trail working super hero donated over 8 hours of his time (and equipment) on Saturday, to ensure that minimal snow is required to have the trails in great shape – trimming back stubble in the upper meadow / field area.

    After chatting with Steve a bit, the group split into 2 groups, picking up sticks, trimming overhanging branches, and clearing debris which would inhibit grooming or damage skis.  We met at the central 4 way intersection after cleaning the south and east spurs of the trail, and then went off to clean up the west & north spurs.  

    As we finished up the northern spur, we witnessed a spectacular view of the sunset, from a vantage point that towered over the majestic St. Croix River Valley.
    Closest to farthest:  Micah trimming back some branches, Tyler & John removing some Buckthorn (invasive species), and Arne & Neal trimming overhanging branches in the far distance.

    Dr. Laugus came well prepared with his pole saw – thanks to him, overhanging branches weighted down with snow won’t be hitting your head as you ski through.
    Following the trail work, we enjoyed a celebratory beverage, and had dinner at The Vegetarian, a local world class Indian restaurant.  After dinner, a great time was had viewing Salsa Cycles’s “Reveal The Path“.  

    The end result is a 10 + foot wide, beautifully prepared trail which will be groomable with minimal snow.

  • XC Ski Trail Work Day & Screening Of Reveal The Path THIS SATURDAY

    Steve and Duane take a moment to show that Cyclova XC trail work days aren’t all business – rather, a lot of fun!

    You read the title right, this Saturday, November 10 you are encouraged to join us for an afternoon on getting the XC Ski trail in St. Croix Falls ready for winter & to be groomed.  

    “Wait”, you say – there aren’t xc ski trails in St. Croix Falls… Well, now there are.  We’re thrilled to announce that there will indeed be groomed xc ski trails in St. Croix Falls, located on the north side of town within the 450 acre Wert Nature Preserve.  To ski the entire system will be just under a 6k ski, with a few sections of out and back.  This will be a trail for all levels of xc skiers, with flat meandering loops, as well as very challenging climbs/descents.  Trail marking signage & and trailhead will be installed in the coming month.  Much more of the details will be released in following posts here, as well as on the city of St. Croix Falls website.  Thanks to the City of St. Croix Falls (the “City of Trails”) for making this happen!

    To be among the first to learn a whole lot more about these trails – and to be a part of getting them ready to ski in their inaugural season, bring a shovel, branch “nippers”, and a strong back this Saturday.  We will meet up at the Cyclova XC in downtown St. Croix Falls at 2PM, review the game plan, and then caravan to the trail head site by 2:30PM (at the north end of Day Road).  Some folks will walk the trails picking up sticks, others will trim back a few overhanging branches, and others will walk the meadow packing down pocket gopher dirt mounds.  The goal will be to prep the ground so that we have an ideal surface to start grooming when the snow flies – and to ensure good skiing conditions with minimal snow.  

    We’ll likely work out on the trail for 3 hours.  Then, at about 5:30PM folks are likely to grab dinner at one of the great restaurants in town.  Following dinner, at 7PM, we will be screening Salsa Cycles new adventure cycling film “Reveal The Path” on the 17 foot Cyclova XC big screen.  This film was made by the same folks who filmed “Ride the Divide” and has won much acclaim.  Don’t miss this chance to see a great new adventure cycling film amongst like minded folks!

    In summary, following is the day’s schedule:
    2:00PM:  Trail workers converge at Cyclova XC, to look at trail maps and review the game game plan.
    2:30PM:  Caravan to the trailhead site, at the end of Day Road
    5:30PM:  The group likely will decide on a place to eat, and enjoy dinner/drinks together
    7:00PM:  Reveal The Path will be screened (all welcome, free to attend) at Cyclova XC.

  • Winter Tech Clinic & Adventure Presentation Schedule – ’12 – ’13 (All Welcome, Free To Attend)

    Join us at Cyclova XC for our series of Winter Tech Clinics & Adventure Presentations!


    We’re REALLY looking forward to a snowy Winter – and we know that you are too!  It’s with this excitement, that we’re thrilled to announce our 2012 – ’13 winter clinic schedule.  This season will feature 8 different clinic dates on a variety of topics, by a wide variety of presenters (will we have any other perfect attendance records this year?).

    In addition to the very popular wax clinics with a different theme at each of these dates, we will kick off each evening with a 30 minute Adventure Presentation each evening at 6 (**except where another time is noted**).  We’ll be mixing up our clinic topics this season – in addition to focusing on ski waxing, we’ll also focus on other key topics like sports nutrition, winter cycling, and sports medicine. 

    Complimentary quality beverages will be available at each event – last year, some regulars even started bringing snacks to share.  This all, along with a thoughtful focused tech clinic & discussion make for a very special evening.  We look forward to having you as our guest!

    Thursday, November 15, 2012 @ 6PM:  Cyclova XC Co-Owner Frank Lundeen presents “18 Consecutive Months On Snow”.  October of 2001 marked the first of Frank’s 18 consecutive months of xc skiing on snow, as he chased snow around the globe – to Australia and back.  Frank’s slideshow will feature many pictures ranging from travel to training to lifestyle to SuperTour & World Loppet racing shots. 

    After Frank’s presentation, Mike Lundeen of Toko leads a clinic for all levels of  skiers on glide waxing fundamentals. In this clinic, he will highlight the fundamentals of how to apply glide wax. It is more important to apply wax properly, than to buy the spendy stuff. Learn to make the most of the time & money you spend on glide waxing, by applying it properly.     Thursday, December 6, 2012 @ 6PM:  Cyclova XC Co-Owner Ben Jonjak presents his 2012 Inca Trail trip with Inca Runners.  Cyclova XC team members Kevin Rogers, Micah Bruns, and Doug Berg were with on this trip and may be present to help tell the tales.  This presentation will feature breathtaking images of high mountain hiking – in many cased through ancient ruins – all while hiking & running with Olympian XC skiers.  You don’t want to miss presentation!

  • It’s Stonegrinding Season!

    Freezing temps & snow are in the forecast – this mean’s that it’s Stonegrinding Season at Cyclova XC!

    Freezing temperatures & flurries are in our forecast – and Troll Hollow is planning on firing up the snow guns this week.  This can only mean one thing – ski season is nearly here!  
    We at Cyclova XC have been busy prepping for winter – our Custom Wintersteiger Micro 100 has a new and very unique diamond and is all tuned up for the season.  In short – we are all set for a very snowy and epic Winter of xc skiing!  
    There is no time better than the present to get your skis stoneground and/or hotboxed.  Get your skis in early and you’ll be ready for early season skiing and racing!  A Cyclova XC stonegrind will consistently result in skis that are faster than new – able to absorb enormous amounts of wax and with the perfect structure!

    We did our first weekly stonegrind batch of the season last week, and generally will be grinding every Thursday for the rest of the Fall / Winter seasons.  For a quick turn around, get your skis in by Wednesday evening and they will be done by the end of the day Thursday.

  • Last Chance For Stonegrinding This Spring!

    Bring your skis in to Cyclova XC by the end of the day, Thursday (3/29/2012) to get in on our last grinding batch of the season!

    It’s been a great winter for stonegrinding (much better than it in fact was for XC skiing).  With that said, Thursday is your last chance of the season to get your skis stoneground, hotboxed, and covered in a thick blanket of cover wax.  In short, it’s time to ready for a Summer slumber!

    Bring your skis any time on Thursday, and we’ll get them done and ready for pick up by Wednesday of next week.

  • WAX TIP: 2012 American Birkiebeiner

    Race day waxing can be hectic, so rest easy the night before the Birkie by waxing in advance.  Above, the author helps classic racers at the Mora Vasaloppet apply the klister of the day.

    Following is the preliminary Cyclova XC Racing Service 2012 Birkie Wax tip for the 3 major wax brands of the region. Note that these are not officially endorsed wax tips by the wax companies, rather these are tips that I have personally created based on my 11+ years of professional experience in creating race wax tips.

    Event:  American Birkiebeiner, from Cable to Hayward, WI.

    When:  23k, 52k, or 50k Freestyle / Classic. 10 waves, with the elites starting at 8AM at Telemark on Saturday

    Forecast & Conditions:  Overnight low in between 5’F and 12’F with a temp in the mid teens at the start.  Daytime high will be in the mid to upper twenties. with mostly overcast conditions. The snow temp will be relatively cold.  Expect machined track conditions with a mix of primarily old and a bit of new snow.  Some dirt will be present in the snow – particularly on the final 15 k of the Birkie course on the south facing hills.  Classic tracks will be very firm and somewhat glazed.

    Ski Flex Tips:  Moderate to firmly flexed skis for machined track conditions

    Structure Tips:
    Structure (Elite through wave 3):  Cold Universal Grind or a fine structure (1 pass with the Blue Toko Structure-Rite tool).  
    Structure (Wave 4 and back):  Cold Universal Grind or a medium structure (1 pass with the Red Toko Structure-Rite tool).  
    Glide Wax Tips:
    Fast Wax (Elite through wave 3): HS-10 Teal, Scrape, Brush, HSF-10 Teal, Scrape, Brush.  Apply Flite #11 Cold (Blue) Flourocarbon ironed (using the Fast Wax Base Saver) or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad.
    Fast Wax (Wave 4 and later): HS-20 Blue, Scrape, Brush, HSF-20 Tan, Scrape, Brush.  For Apply Flite #11 Cold (Blue) Flourocarbon ironed (using the Fast Wax Base Saver) or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated Flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad. 
    Swix (Elite through Wave 3):  LF-4, Scrape, Brush, HF-4BW, Scrape, Brush, FC-7 (Cold Cera) ironed in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad
    Swix (Wave 4 and later):  CH-7, Scrape, Brush, HF-7BW, Scrape, Brush, FC-8 (Med Cera) Ironed in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad
    Toko (Elite through Wave 3):  Dibloc LF Moly / Dibloc LF Blue mix (2 : 1 Ratio) Scrape, Brush, Dibloc HF Blue, scrape, brush, Jetstream Blue ironed or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad
    Toko (Wave 4 and later):  Dibloc LF Moly, Scrape, Brush, Dibloc HF Red scrape, brush, Jetstream Red ironed or roto-corked in, brush with dedicated flouorcarbon brush, and polished with polishing pad

    Grip Wax Tips:
    Swix:  Roughen grip zone with 150 grit sandpaper.  Apply KR-20 Base Binder Klister, iron, and smoothen with your thumb while still warm.  Wait to apply your grip wax of the day until Friday night, and check wax reports / weather.    The optimal grip wax of the day will likely be an ice klister (KR-30) lightly covered with a medium hard wax (VR-40).
    Toko:  Roughen grip zone with 150 grit sandpaper.  Apply Base Green Klister, iron, and smoothen with your thumb while still warm.  Wait to apply your grip wax of the day until Friday night, and check wax reports / weather.    The optimal grip wax of the day will likely be an ice klister (Toko Red or Blue Klister) lightly covered with a medium hard wax (Toko Red Hard Wax).

    If you’ve been around the Birkie enough (or XC ski racing in general), you know that a lot of people get stressed out about waxing and other details around the big day.  We at Cyclova XC have a whole lot of experience at the Birkie, and know what it takes to have the race of your life – and most importantly have a fun day out on the trail with thousands of your closest XC skier friends!  Take the stress out of your Birkie weekend by having Cyclova XC prep your race skis!
    Cyclova XC is offering a full range of waxing, stonegrinding, hotboxing, and ski selection services for the Birkie.  If you have multiple skis you might be considering using in the race, bring them in and we’ll help you pick the pair that will be best suited for the event.  Once you have picked your skis, the following waxing services are available:

    • Birkie Racer Flouro Hot wax:  For the skier who wants to have a fast and durable wax job for the big day.  Customer may choose either Fast Wax or Toko products for use on their skis.  (15 step, 3 layer paraffin, LF, HF wax job, and Toko Structure):  $50

    We are expecting a huge rush of Birkie skis to come in for service , so you’ll want to be certain to get them dropped off in time to be prepped to perfection for the big race!  Following are the drop off target times for Birkie race skis:

    • Skis that are to be stoneground & waxed for the race must be dropped off by Sunday evening, February 18
    • Skis that are to be waxed for the race, must be dropped off no later than 3PM on Wednesday, February 22.
    • We will be stonegrinding as per usual on Thursday, February 23 – but the skis in that batch likely won’t be able to have a complete Birkie wax job ready for the big event.
    • All Birkie race skis must be picked up by 7PM on Friday evening, February 24.  We will be closed for the entire Birkie weekend (we’ll be up at the race).

    • Saturday Evening, at 6PM:  The first installment of the Cyclova XC Wax Clinic Series – with waxing appropriate bubbly beverages for all!  Mike Lundeen of Toko & Madshus leads a clinic for all levels of skiers – from Olympians to first timers on glide waxing fundamentals.  In this clinic, we will highlight the fundamentals of how to apply glide wax. It is more important to apply wax properly, than to buy the spendy stuff. Learn to make the most of the time & money you spend on glide waxing, by applying it properly. All are welcome and attendees are entitled to a 10% discount on any wax or tool purchase during this wax clinic – including discounts on some very special closeout products!

  • Great Skiing At Trollhaugen – in the St. Croix River Valley!

    Trollhaugen was a busy place on Wednesday morning, with a full parking lot and a bus load of high school kids out enjoying some early season skiing!

    It’s November, and believe it or not, we have great xc skiing here in the St. Croix River Valley.  Trollhaugen‘s dedication to Nordic skiers continues this ski season, through allowing Nordic skiing anywhere on their many perfectly groomed alpine runs, from 7AM – 9AM.  After a few more days of snow making, their 2.5 Troll Hollow Nordic loop will be finished up and covered in a beautiful blanket of snow.  The Troll Hollow loop has 100% man made snow coverage and is lighted late into the night, making for one of the most convenient XC Ski venues in the region – with guaranteed snow!


    I’ve enjoyed skiing at Trollhaugen twice already this season, and have enjoyed skiing around on the flats at the bottom of the hill, and have also gotten in a great workout by skiing up and down the big hill.  As a bonus for skiing up the hill, you can ski down, practicing your slide turns (or Tele turns if you’re a better skier thank I).  Finally, Steve Edling tipped me in on a great little tip for skiing at Trollhaugen on a busy day, suggesting that I ski back and forth on the bowl at the top of the hill.  Up at the top, there is a great bowl, with a curving trail and fun terrain that provides a great workout.  

    Come on out and join us this morning at Trollhaugen from 7 to 9 for a fun ski, including a beginners lesson at 7:15 – just look for the Cyclova XC jackets.  Also, I will be leading the wax clinic at Trollhaugen’s Nordic Race Clinic tomorrow at noon.  Come on over to Trollhaugen and check it out!

    Cyclova XC, Inc opened a new bicycle, xc ski, and trail run store in beautiful downtown St. Croix Falls, WI on October 1, 2011.
    We are located in beautiful downtown St. Croix Falls, WI, about a 50 minute drive from Minneapolis in the beautiful upper St. Croix River Valley, and the gateway to northern Wisconsin’s plethora of silent sport opportunities.  This area is a literal playground for cyclists, xc skiers, and trail runners – with a world class network of trails for our customers to enjoy!  With three wineries, great coffee shops, shopping, theater, bed & breakfasts, and camping (at one of 3 state parks within 8 miles) within a 5 minute walk of downtown there is plenty to do after you’re done with your ride, run, or ski.

    In short, Cyclova XC is a community of silent sport enthusiasts; where athletes and enthusiasts come to purchase their equipment, have it serviced by experts, learn, and enjoy their craft.

    Cyclova XC was launched in August of 2009 as a bike & ski team with a daily updated blog.  Here is the story on the name Cyclova XC. The founders and now co-owners of Cyclova XC (Frank Lundeen & Ben Jonjak) launched Cyclova XC with the simple goal of having fun with our sports and building community around them.  When we started the Riverbrook Nordic Ski Team and Leinenkugel’s Bike Team in the 90’s, we had a similar goal – and now this simple goal is again thriving with the Cyclova XC Team.   After more than 2 years of rapid growth & a global audience viewing CyclovaXC.com daily, selling over 150 team bike and ski kits, and suggestions from many folks that we open a store – we have done so.  For the full history on the progression toward the opening of our store, CLICK HERE.
