  • Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy Names Brian Krill as Executive Director

     

    Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBSTA) is excited to announce that Brian Krill will be joining SBSTA as its Executive Director, effective July 1, 2020. As SBSTA’s Executive Director, Krill will lead the athletic and academic staff to further strengthen SBSTA’s vision to be the recognized gold standard for ski teams and ski academies. Krill has an extensive background in both skiing and education – having worked for several organizations around the country, including U.S. Ski and Snowboard, Western Colorado University, Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, and Crested Butte Academy, with a track record of moving organizations forward.

    “Brian’s experience is unique: having been a teacher, a coach, athletic director, and dorm parent at a ski academy; having been an entrepreneur in educational services; having interfaced with every major ski academy and ski club in the country in developing U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s Club Certification Program, and as Director of Sport Education; and having been a non-profit executive,” said Steve Shray, Chair, SBSTA Board of Trustees. “We are looking forward to him applying his vast experience to SBSTA for the benefit of our student-athletes.” Krill’s role as Executive Director concludes a six-month nationwide search process that included the entire SBSTA community: staff; alumni; parents; and Trustees.

    “I am thrilled to be joining the Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy community,” said Krill. “SBSTA has developed an incredible reputation and platform for developing student-athletes in a holistic manner — the combination of a full-scale club and academy has proven to be a unique and successful formula. I began my career in an academic and athletic environment, and I am looking forward to returning to my roots.”

    Brian’s family has deep roots on the West Coast. Brian’s wife Karin, is a professor of theatre with degrees from U.C. Berkeley, Northwestern, and the University of Washington. His step- daughter was a talented ski racer in Colorado and now lives near Eugene, OR, his second daughter is an aspiring musician and a freshman at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR, and his youngest daughter is a freshman at Jackson Hole High School and will be on a Rotary exchange program to Argentina for her sophomore year.

    The Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy is a nationally recognized Alpine, Freeride, and Nordic ski team and ski academy that has produced multiple US Ski Team members, NCAA collegiate competitors, national champions in virtually all age groups, and numerous nationally ranked athletes. SBSTA is gold certified through the US Ski and Snowboard Certification Program and accredited by NAIS.   • Sugar Bowl Ski Team and Academy Hires Will Sweetser and Sarah Dominick

    Sugar Bowl Ski Team and Academy is pleased to announce the growth of their Nordic programming with the recent hiring of Will Sweetser and Sarah Dominick. Sweetser and Dominick have relocated to Truckee with their daughter, Aesklyn, and are now one month in their roles on the SBSTA staff. The two will join Nordic Program Director Martin Benes and Assistant Coach Ambrose Tuscano. With the addition of two staff, the SBSTA Nordic Team can now offer year-round, professionally-developed Nordic programming from ages 8 through 23.

    Dominick, a native of Cody, Wyoming, most recently worked as the Nordic assistant coach at Bowdoin College. Her previous coaching experience includes work as the founding coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle ski team, Head Coach of the Presque Isle High School Nordic team, Assistant Coach at Mountain Lakes Nordic and the Rangeley Lakes Ski Club, and U14 Coach at the Jackson Hole Ski Club. As a competitor, she has been four times in the top 10 at U.S. Cross-Country Ski Championships, earned a bronze medal at World Masters Nordic Championships, and was a four-time NCAA DIII All-American in track and field while competing for Bates College. She is a registered yoga and yoga nidra instructor and specializes in mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

    Dominick will lead the Sugar Bowl Ski Team Nordic Development Program. She is additionally assisting with the Sugar Bowl Academy Team and teaching art at the Academy.

    Sweetser, a native of Auburn, Maine, spent 15 years at the Maine Winter Sports Center in Caribou, Maine as the Community Development Director, Head Cross-Country Coach and Director of Competition. Prior to that he served as the head coach for the Gap Year Program at Mountain Lakes Nordic. He has also coached at Carrabassett Valley Academy, Bates College, Jackson Hole Ski Club and the Auburn Middle School. He has worked as trip leader for the NENSA Junior National Team on three occasions, served as wax technician for both the US Ski Team and the US Biathlon Team, and personally coached five athletes to Olympic Winter Games teams. Last season, Sweetser helped Lance McKenney (Fort Fairfield, ME) to a 20th place finish at the FIS World Junior Championships. As a competitor, Sweetser was an occasional varsity skier at Dartmouth College while completing his degree in English and Creative Writing.

    Sweetser is working alongside Benes at the Sugar Bowl Academy Team and will help revive the collegiate summer training program for 2018.

    Sugar Bowl Ski Team and Academy is seeking a full-time assistant Nordic coach for the 2017-18 season. Sugar Bowl Academy offers a year-round program for student-athletes, in grades 8-12 as well as a Post-Graduate program. The Academy offers both day and boarding options and we offer several development camps throughout the year. In addition, the Ski Team runs several seasonal youth programs designed to develop a passion for the sport and lifelong skills.

    Sugar Bowl Academy student-athletes thrive on the dual pursuit of rigorous academics and competitive skiing in an environment that celebrates hard work and the pursuit of worthy goals. Graduates have gone on to some of the best colleges and universities in the country and many have continued their pursuit of skiing on NCAA teams at schools like Bates, Boston College, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Saint Lawrence University and the University of Colorado.

    The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, college/elite racing experience, and some coaching experience. They will be willing to work with the entire Nordic staff (including youth coaches) to develop athletes and programming. Job duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

    • Assist in the day-to-day running of the Sugar Bowl Academy Nordic Ski Team including practice planning, budgeting, team communication, etc.
    • Assist in weekly/yearly training plan writing and development.
    • Along with Nordic staff, assist in support of long-term athlete development model for the Sugar Bowl Nordic programs.
    • Assist Head Coach in developing camp and race schedule.
    • Assist in recruiting and retention of SBA Nordic Athletes.
    • Attend regional, national, and international race and camp opportunities as necessary.
    • Other duties, as they arise, given ample notice.

    Salary/Compensation: Salary DOE, Health care, 403(b) Retirement plan, Sugar Bowl/Royal Gorge Season Pass, and equipment stipend.

  • Sugar Bowl Academy Accepting Applications for Elite Team

    Sugar Bowl Academy is pleased to announce they are accepting applications for their Elite Nordic Team for the coming 2016/2017 season. The team will provide world-class coaching and training opportunities to its athletes.

    Head Sugar Bowl Nordic coach Martin Benes will oversee the program along with the Sugar Bowl Academy coaching staff. Athletes will be based out of the Royal Gorge-Sugar Bowl resort and have access to the wealth of training sites in the Truckee-Tahoe region. In addition, the athletes will make use of the recently constructed Sugar Bowl Academy facilities, including a state-of-the-art gym. Team members receive funding to offset camp and race expenses, as well as a housing subsidy.

    Take your skiing to the next level with Sugar Bowl Academy’s Summer Nordic Camp 

    Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBST&A), Sugar Bowl Academy’s Nordic summer camp is designed for skiers ages 12 to 17 who want to take their summer conditioning program to the next level. Skiers will have the opportunity to learn new skills and develop a better understanding of Nordic ski training while training with Sugar Bowl Academy’s highly qualified coaches. Each camper will be able to maximize their experience by training in small groups with personalized instruction. Activities will include rollerskiing, running, swimming, soccer, and more!

    Sugar Bowl Academy located in Norden CA is the country’s only ski in/ski out ski academy.   • Sugar Bowl Nordic Accepting Applications for New Elite Nordic Team

    Sugar Bowl Academy is pleased to announce they are starting an Elite Nordic Team for the coming 2015-16 season. The team will look to pick up where the recently dissolved Far West Elite Team left off and provide world-class coaching and training opportunities to its athletes.

    Head Sugar Bowl Nordic coach Martin Benes will oversee the program along with two-time Olympian, Marcus Nash. Athletes will be based out of the Royal Gorge-Sugar Bowl resort and have access to the wealth of training sites in the Truckee-Tahoe region. In addition, the athletes will make use of the recently constructed Sugar Bowl Academy facilities. Team members receive funding to offset camp and race expenses, as well as a housing subsidy.

    Interested applicants should send an athletic resume and letter of intent to mbenes@sbacademy.org by June 15th. The team will be formally announced at the end of June.
