    Hello, XC skiers!

Excitement is building in West Yellowstone after our first snow. It won’t be long before we’re back out on the trails, enjoying the fresh air, great skiing and the start of another season. Now is the time to make your plans for the 2026 Yellowstone Ski Festival, Nov. 21 through 28 on the Rendezvous Ski Trails.

Our trail crew has been working hard to get the trails ready, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to regular grooming and miles of outstanding skiing. From first tracks in the morning to an easy ski with friends in the afternoon, there’s nothing better than getting out on the snow and enjoying everything West Yellowstone has to offer.

    Eight Days on Early Snow

Thanksgiving week in West Yellowstone has belonged to skiers for a long time. Competitive athletes, first-timers and whole families come from all over to get on snow while most of the country is still waiting for winter. There is skiing every day of the festival, clinics for every level, biathlon on the range and a race to close out the week.

The tradition reaches back to 1979, when the U.S. Ski Team began bringing coaches to West Yellowstone each November to train them. FasterSkier told that story last fall in a look inside the festival and its clinics, and it is worth a read before you come.

A November trail pass is required for all of November and during the festival, and it is good through Nov. 30. From Dec. 1 through March 31, season and day passes are sold by the U.S. Forest Service at the Hebgen Lake Ranger Station, at Freeheel and Wheel, and at the Rendezvous Trailhead.

    Clinics With Top Coaches

Looking to improve your skiing this season? Our clinics feature top coaches who can help you build skills, clean up your technique and get even more enjoyment out of your time on skis.

Jack Hart will be leading this year’s coaching staff. We place every skier in a group of similar ability, six to eight skiers per coach, and the coaches rotate through the groups each half day so you hear more than one voice over the week. Advanced groups also work on speed, endurance, strength, agility and race tactics.

The three-day Skate and Classic XC Fundamentals for Performance and the two-day Skate and Classic Tune Up both begin Tuesday, Nov. 24, with classic in the morning and skate in the afternoon. One-day technique clinics follow later in the week: skate on Thursday, Nov. 26 or Saturday, Nov. 28, and classic on Friday, Nov. 27.

Don’t wait to sign up. Any clinic with fewer than six skiers registered by Nov. 19 will be canceled. Find clinic details here and register here.

    Biathlon, a Race and Après-Ski

Biathlon newcomers get a proper start. A Try-It clinic on Tuesday runs two sessions of up to 50 skiers each, and anyone planning to race the novice biathlon for the first time needs to attend it. The biathlon sprint and novice races follow on Wednesday, Nov. 25, at the stadium and range.

Friday afternoon brings après-ski at the Rendezvous Trailhead. On Saturday, Nov. 28, the week wraps up with a fun 5 km and 10 km freestyle mass start, open to all ages and abilities and capped at 200 skiers. Watch for race registration to open in the coming weeks.

Wax clinics, a mindful movement class and an evening speaker round out the week. Everything depends on snow: low snow means modified courses, and no snow means races and clinics are canceled, with clinic fees refunded less a small administrative fee. The full festival schedule is online and will be updated as November gets closer.

    Places to Stay and Visit

When booking your stay, please consider our festival sponsors. They support our ski community, and we appreciate your support of their businesses.

While you’re in town, stop by Freeheel and Wheel for the latest ski gear, great coffee and a chance to catch up with fellow skiers before heading out on the trails.

If the snow is slow to arrive, there are still great ways to get outside: roller ski or bike the road into Yellowstone National Park, or head out on the nine miles of paved Shortline Trail. Destination Yellowstone has more on what to do around town.

Back in March for the Rendezvous

The season in West Yellowstone ends the way it starts, with a crowd on the trails. The Yellowstone Rendezvous Race, part of the American Ski Marathon Series, brings more than 600 skiers to town and is set for Saturday, March 6, 2027. Registration opens in November.

    See You on the Trails

The Yellowstone Ski Festival is a great way to kick off winter, catch up with old friends, meet new ones and get some real Nordic skiing in before December. Whether you’re joining a clinic, taking first tracks on fresh corduroy or just heading out for a relaxing ski, we can’t wait to see you. Start planning your trip, book your room and get ready for another great season in West Yellowstone.

    Rendezvous Trails and Grooming

Historically speaking, the West Yellowstone Rendezvous trail system has some of the best early-season snow in the country and is groomed by a team of top groomers in the industry. While we can’t control the weather, we’re hoping the snow falls early and often this season. Get an early view of the trails!

    Something for Everyone

The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is open every day, giving you the rare opportunity to safely view grizzly bears, wolves (bonus: the bears don’t hibernate, so they’re visible year-round) and playful river otters. For a break from the outdoors, catch a Hollywood hit or the breathtaking nature documentary, “Yellowstone,” on the aptly named Yellowstone Giant Screen theater at a whopping six stories tall (bonus: at night a Hollywood featured film is available). Check out other activities to do around West Yellowstone.

    Fun, Inspiring, Welcoming

The feedback we hear most each year is that the festival and clinics are fun, inspiring and welcoming.  For XC ski enthusiasts, it’s the place to be.

  • West Yellowstone Ski Festival Update

Yellowstone Ski Festival 2016 is just around the corner. At present, there is no snow on the ski trails, but the surfaces have been rolled and ready for when the flakes do start to fly. Forecasts from PowderChasers.com is calling for 6”-10” of snow by the end of next week in Southern Montana.

Yellowstone Ski Festival staff is planning for 3 different scenarios: A – Skiing on groomed Rendezvous Ski Trails; B – skiing on groomed South Plateau trails; C – no skiing at either location. While everyone is hopeful for Plan A or Plan B, YSF staff won’t leave you hanging! Check out the rough details for the alternate plans below:

Plan B: In the event that there is not enough snow on the Rendezvous Ski Trails, the ski events will move to the secondary venue of the South Plateau. The Friday and Saturday races would still take place, each being a 9k point-to-point race. On Snow Gear Demos will move to the Plateau, as well. Après Ski events will remain at the Rendezvous Ski Trails trailhead area. Shuttle buses will run from town to the Plateau trailheads and there will be parking for vehicles.

Plan C: In the event that there is not enough snow on the South Plateau to hold the races, Yellowstone Ski Festival will host the following events:

    • Wednesday:
      • Summer Biathlon – A running biathlon for IBU and Novice classes will be held on the Rendezvous Ski Trails.
      • Rollerski Sprint – Depending on the state of the roads, a rollerski race will be held in the afternoon at the Bakers Hole Campground, just a couple miles outside of town. Prize money will be awarded to the top finishers.
    • Friday: Trail Run on the Rendezvous Ski Trails
      • The distances options will be 10k, 5k, and 2k. Prize money will be awarded to the top finishers.
    • Saturday: Rollerski Distance Race
      • Location is still to be determined. Prize money will be awarded to the top finishers.
    • Indoor Expo and all evening activities at the Holiday Inn will take place as scheduled.
    • Apres Ski and S’mores will take place at the Trailhead Area as scheduled.
    • On Snow Demo is to be determined.

More information, including details about the different scenarios and refund information, is available on at www.SkiRunBikeMT.com/general-information

Yellowstone National Park is currently open for administrative travel only. During this time, the roads are open and free of charge to all cyclists, pedestrians, and rollerskiers. There are no services and access can change based on weather. Freeheel & Wheel is renting bicycles for those interested in enjoying the Park.

  • Yellowstone Ski Festival Partners with Casper Mountain Biathlon Club

Albany County, in partnership with the Wyoming Consortium for Veterans Activities, was awarded a $200,735.00 Adaptive Sports Grant to assist disabled veterans across Wyoming. The Casper Mountain Biathlon Club was part of the consortium awarded funding to improve access to sports activities for veterans across Wyoming. The announcement came last month as part of a $7.8 million dollar competitive grant initiative from the United States Veterans Administration (VA).

The aim of the grant is to support adaptive sports and recreation for veterans and active duty military. According to the VA, funding may be used for a wide range of activities, from preparing “high-level athletes for Paralympic competition” to supporting “activities ranging from rowing, cycling, equestrian sports, and Tai Chi.” According to the most recent reports from the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are approximately 10,108 veterans living in Wyoming currently receiving VA benefits. To date, current veteran’s sports activities are serving less than 1% of the population.

Casper Mountain Biathlon Club has been the recipient of an Adaptive Sports Grant form the Dept. of Veteran Affairs in past years. “The club is thrilled to be part this consortium that will increase the reach of adaptive sports programs in the state as well as introduce Veterans from around the country to all that Wyoming has to offer, including adaptive biathlon” states Cathy Rosser, CMBC representative. Casper Mountain Biathlon Club is the only Paralympic Sport Club in Wyoming and has in the last year constructed Biathlon and Nordic Training and Competition facility. The newly constructed facility features a range and trails that meet Paralympic competeition standards. Coming up in November CMBC will be partnering up with the West Yellowstone Ski Festival, Nov 22 – 26, to offer adaptive biathlon and Nordic skiing as part of the festival, which draws over a thousand skiers from all over the nation for a week of training, racing and festivities.

Marty Martinez, Senior Project Coordinator for the University of Wyoming Veterans Services Center, notes the importance of serving veterans on campus. “As our veterans and military personnel attend UW and begin the transition to civilian life, many can encounter new difficulties or challenges from physical or mental health injury, limitation, or disability as a result of       their military service. By providing training, coaching, services, and adaptive equipment to support these veterans, we can increase the health and quality of life of our students – and all veterans – who choose to participate in the program. We are proud to be a member of the Consortium and look forward to working with our partners to better serve our veterans at the University of Wyoming and Albany County.”

Partners for the grant consortium include the Wyoming VFW, the Wyoming National Guard, the Veterans Commission, Casper Vet Center, Wyoming Veterans Services Center, Teton Adaptive Sports, Albany School District #1, Casper Mountain Biathlon Club, U.S. Biathlon Association, U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing, Yellowstone Ski Festival, University of Wyoming, the City of Laramie, CrossFit 7220, and the Wyoming Game & Fish Department.

Additional information about the program and grant awardees may be found at www.va.gov/adaptivesports.

  • Registration Open for Yellowstone Ski Festival & Camp

    The yellowstone ski festival

Registration Now Open for Annual Ski Festival & Cross-Country Ski Camp

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Montana — West Yellowstone Ski Festival & Cross-Country Ski Camp announced the dates for its annual training and technique clinic. The event will be held November 24-28, 2015.

In the mid 1980s, longtime local Drew Barney, along with Torbjorn Karlsen and Dick Hunt, started what was then called “Fall Camp” to offer coaches the opportunity to attend clinics. In addition, citizen racers and individuals who wanted to improve their skiing technique were also encouraged to attend. Nearly thirty years later, the cross-country ski camp has devotees who come from around the nation and attend every year.

Through the years the camp has grown and evolved to become a top training and technique camp for the cross-country ski community. The number one goal is to provide skiers a top notch clinic experience, whether they are avid master racers looking for an early season training camp or skiers who simply want to improve their technique.  The camp has assembled a high end coaching staff comprised of elite cross-country ski professionals.  Barney commented, “Our first class coaching staff combined with West Yellowstone’s Rendezvous Trail system — which consistently has some of the best early season snow in the country —makes this the ideal place in America to transition from dryland training to on-snow skiing.”

For anyone interested in attending the West Yellowstone Cross-Country Ski Camp, you can find more information and register at http://www.skirunbikemt.com/ clinics.html
