    Green Mountain Valley School Seeks Full-Time Nordic Coach

    Green Mountain Valley School, located in Waitsfield, VT, is seeking a dedicated, passionate, and mission-aligned Nordic Coach to join its cross-country ski program and help develop the next generation of champions and leaders.

    As the Nordic Coach, you will work closely with the Nordic Program Director to design and execute training and competition programs for a talented group of student-athletes, ranging from U14 to post-graduate age groups. This is a full-time position that plays an integral role in both the day-to-day life of the program and its long-term success. You’ll report directly to the Nordic Program Director and collaborate with the broader GMVS community.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Athlete Development:

    • Assist in designing and executing comprehensive year-round training and competition programs.
    • Coach and mentor athletes across all levels in technical, tactical, and mental performance.
    • Support athlete development through video analysis, ski testing, and performance tracking.
    • Communicate proactively with athletes, families, and staff.
    • Leverage technology and performance tools to support athlete progress.

    Competition and Travel:

    • Travel with the team to regional and national competitions, including Eastern Cups, Junior Nationals, Eastern High School Championships, and New England U16 Championships.
    • Attend GMVS training camps throughout the year (~6 weeks per year).
    • Support race-day operations, including ski preparation and athlete support.
    • Represent GMVS at regional and national summer development projects and events.

    Program Operations:

    • Maintain a consistent presence at on-snow and dryland practices throughout the year.
    • Assist with planning and attend the annual summer GMVS Nordic camp.
    • Help manage program logistics, including equipment, ski preparation, and scheduling.

    Community and Outreach:

    • Help grow the program’s visibility through social media and community engagement.
    • Support and participate in the local BKL program, including camps and festivals.
    • Contribute to a positive and connected program culture both within GMVS and in the broader ski community.

    Position Summary

    The Nordic Assistant Coach assists the Head Coach in the administration of all aspects of the program, including, but not limited to, coaching, recruiting, event scheduling, supervision of program personnel, budget management, Student-Athlete mentoring, team travel, equipment, meals, technical logistics (software), marketing, and compliance with NCAA and the RMISA rules/regulations. The Assistant Coach will embrace and model a positive coaching philosophy and associated techniques, fostering a culture of respect, positive communication, and collaboration with internal departments within the division and the university. The Assistant Coach will also demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the principles of inclusivity through hiring practices, training and development programming, campus collaborations, or involvement and participation in university/divisional inclusivity projects or initiatives.

    Essential Functions

    • Recruit quality student-athletes capable of pursuing a baccalaureate degree and achieving an exemplary graduation rate while managing a cost-effective and administratively efficient program
    • Demonstrate excellent teaching and coaching competencies with regard to: sport skill instruction, motivation, and tactical strategies, while also designing a competitive schedule that maximizes student-athlete development and performance
    • Provide leadership in the personal development of student-athletes by projecting a positive and professional image, including opportunities for social, emotional, and academic development that align with the University’s 4-D educational model
    • Coordinate various aspects of the program, including daily operations: team travel, recruiting logistics, equipment, meals, technical logistics of current and proposed software packages, etc.
    • Exhibiting the highest professional standards and ethical behavior about adherence to NCAA, Conference, University, and the Division of Athletics rules and regulations
    • Proactively uphold the outstanding working relationships within the Division and the University
    • Assuming other duties as assigned by the Vice Chancellor of Athletics & Ritchie Center Operations

    Work Schedule

    RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    As a part-time reporter,  you will support weekly content and in-season race reporting. This will include creating engaging content that serves the readership of FasterSkier, staying in tune with all aspects and participant levels of the sport, covering breaking news, and submitting articles in a timely manner. 

    REPORTS TO: Managing Editor

    • Winter race reporting: cover 1-2 races per World Cup venue, with additional reporting as needed during the Tour de Ski and Olympic Winter Games. 
    • Contribute 1 feature-length story per month.
    • Contribute 2-3 additional stories per month, excluding race-reports.
    • Generate original ideas that you can take from drawing board to final draft.
    • Ensure the site publishes timely race reports and race follow-ups. In general, one story per gender/per race for World Cup and Olympic events. 
    • Contribute to FasterSkier’s social media accounts/channels in coordination with staff.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Strong writing skills. Work should require minimal editing. 
    • Organization, ability to meet deadlines, self-starter with the creativity to pitch unique ideas.
    • Most races take place in Europe. Must be willing to work early in the morning and on weekends. 

    COMPENSATION:

    • Compensation is based on experience and scaled based on frequency of contribution.

    FasterSkier is seeking an intern to join our team for the 2016/2017 winter season (December-April). Essentially, we’re looking for an eager go-getter with an up-for-anything attitude and high level of interest in cross-country skiing.

    This person will assist our staff with daily race reporting, especially on World Cup race days (cross-country, nordic combined and biathlon), as well as larger projects. Schedule can be relatively flexible, but we expect our interns to assist with weekend race reporting whenever possible, devoting a few hours on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday each week to assignments like transcriptions, research, interviews, blogs, or photo galleries. Mid-week assignments are part of an intern’s responsibility as well.

    This position is part time and unpaid with potential for equipment perks and a larger role within our team.

    • Must possess strong writing skills and well-developed communication skills, and the ability to work independently and self-manage daily tasks.
    • Will assist with interviewing athletes and coaches, transcribing fellow reporters’ interviews, and posting directly to the website (i.e. photo galleries, press releases).
    • Must be proficient with computers and social media, and have a basic understanding of WordPress or an ability to learn quickly.

    Love skiing? Love writing? Looking for a job or hobby that combines the two? FasterSkier needs you!

    The FasterSkier team is looking to grow with the addition of part-time reporters as well as volunteer contributors.

    Part-Time Reporter:

    Those applying for the part-time position should be highly motivated and self-driven with strong writing skills and a thorough understanding of nordic racing. All FS reporters work remotely while reporting on various levels and topics relating to the nordic-skiing world.

    Perhaps the best part of the part-time job is the potential for travel. Committed and proven reporters can expect to travel to one or more events throughout the 2015/2016 race season, including but not limited to the U.S. SuperTours in Montana, Idaho and Vermont, as well as U.S. nationals in Michigan, the American Birkebeiner in Wisconsin, and perhaps best of all, one or more of the Canada World Cups in Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and Canmore.

    Part-time reporters are expected to manage their time and tasks on a weekly basis, with an expectation of working most weekends and at least 20 hours a week during the race season (mid-November through March). While covering events on site and in person, reporters are expected to work full time and around the clock to complete all assignments.

    Clear and efficient writing is a must, and reporters should have the ability to produce well-crafted stories on a tight schedule — often within a few hours of a race.

    Candidates should have a strong interest and desire to cover most elite domestic and international races (in the U.S. and Canada, and internationally) throughout the 2015/2016 season from the comfort of their own homes. A computer and reliable internet are a must.

    Compensation will be paid in monthly installments and can be discussed upon inquiry. Ideal candidates should be able to start as soon as possible, possess a strong knowledge of nordic ski racing, as well as social awareness and interview skills, and be able to write effectively and efficiently on deadline while thoroughly proofreading all work. Keen communication skills are key as much of this job involves email and phone interviews, as well as frequent email check-ins and conversations with coworkers.

    Contributing Reporter:

    FS survives because of the enthusiasm and loyalty of our readers, and if you find yourself an avid fan of the site with a desire to write — even if it is just a few times a month — then this is for you! We compensate contributing reporters with equipment or gear perks based on the amount of work they’re able to complete over a season.

    We need volunteer contributors in a variety of areas, from weekend to on-site reporting on some of the biggest events in nordic and biathlon racing, to regional contributors (i.e. Canada, and in the U.S., regions like the Midwest, Alaska, etc.). And if you specialize in biathlon or nordic combined, we certainly have a place for you on the FS team.

    Must have a computer with reliable internet, desire to pitch story ideas and contribute on an as-needed basis, strong written and communication skills, and the ability to proofread your own work.     This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists and those passionate about cross-country skiing to dive right into covering all aspects of the sport. Positions range from full-time and part-time reporters, with the latter being responsible for international and domestic race coverage throughout the winter. Contributors and interns with computer skills are also needed, especially as we get into the thick of things from November through April.

    Staff members will work on meaningful projects, interview top athletes and officials, and potentially travel.

    In the past, first-year reporters have traveled to the Olympics, World Championships, World Juniors and countless other top events world-wide. Even the volunteer contributors (who we wish we could pay) can find themselves in the mixed zone of a World Cup race.

    Working for FasterSkier is a unique and exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals. You will be paid to travel to some of the best winter destinations in the world to report on ski races. Within weeks of starting you will be calling Olympic athletes on their cell phones. And you will be working with a great team, dedicated to pushing the envelope of ski journalism.

    Full-time reporter:

    Responsible for writing and posting one to three news articles per working day. Weekends are typically consumed with race reports and full-time reporter will be expected to head up both international (World Cup) and domestic (SuperTour, NorAm) coverage. Travel required to cover certain major events.

    –       Salary: based on experience.

    Weekend reporter:

    Responsible for covering races remotely for about 24 weekends throughout the upcoming winter. Includes watching races live online (World Cup) and following up on results for non-televised events (i.e. SuperTour and NorAms). Should have regular access to a computer with reliable internet, and the capability of using Skype and composing thoughtful emails as reporting tools.

    –       Salary: stipend based on experience.

    Part-time intern:

    Will assist with interviewing athletes, transcribing others’ interviews, and posting directly to the website (i.e. photo galleries, press releases). Must have a basic understanding of WordPress or an ability to learn quickly. Position is unpaid with equipment perks.

    Volunteer contributing /reporter positions:

    – Masters contributor:

    For the ultimate “Master Blaster” who loves to write almost as much as skiing! Should be willing to pitch original stories, then find the best method of reporting and writing them. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

    – Canadian contributor:

    Seeking a native who knows the ins and outs of nordic and biathlon in Canada. It helps to be connected or an avid fan that follows all aspects of the sport. Responsible for helping with Canadian coverage, especially with NorAms and national championships. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

    – Travel reporter:

    For those willing to write and report on-site as needed throughout the season. Unpaid with the reward of paid travel and seeing races live!

    – Eastern-collegiate reporter:

    Ideal candidate will be at most of the EISA carnival races throughout the 2013/2014 season with the ability to take photos and report on all events. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

    – Western collegiate reporter:

    Ideal candidate will be at most of the RMISA carnival races throughout the 2013/2014 season with the ability to take photos and report on all events. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

    All positions:

    Ideal candidates will be able to start immediately and commit through the 2013/2014 nordic season, pitching ideas and collaborating on assignments with editors. Being available for Monday morning conference calls is definitely a plus, as all jobs are done remotely.

    Intern and contributing positions are unpaid with gear or equipment perks depending on the level of the involvement and frequency of reports. Promising interns or contributors could be promoted to paid staff in the future and/or earn trips to cover events.
