(JOB POSTING) FasterSkier Part-Time Contributing Reporter
PAID CONTRACT: November 15th – March 31st

HIGHLIGHTS:
- Work from home in a dynamic environment to cover the sport of cross country skiing from the World Cup to recreational level.
- Support North American coverage of prestigious international events including the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and the FIS Tour de Ski.
- Feature and share the lifestyle of cross country skiing through product reviews, analysis of sport science, and interviews with key athletes, coaches, and professionals in the sport.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a part-time reporter, you will support weekly content and in-season race reporting. This will include creating engaging content that serves the readership of FasterSkier, staying in tune with all aspects and participant levels of the sport, covering breaking news, and submitting articles in a timely manner.

REPORTS TO: Managing Editor
- Winter race reporting: cover 1-2 races per World Cup venue, with additional reporting as needed during the Tour de Ski and Olympic Winter Games.
- Contribute 1 feature-length story per month.
- Contribute 2-3 additional stories per month, excluding race-reports.
- Generate original ideas that you can take from drawing board to final draft.
- Ensure the site publishes timely race reports and race follow-ups. In general, one story per gender/per race for World Cup and Olympic events.
- Contribute to FasterSkier’s social media accounts/channels in coordination with staff.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong writing skills. Work should require minimal editing.
- Organization, ability to meet deadlines, self-starter with the creativity to pitch unique ideas.
- Most races take place in Europe. Must be willing to work early in the morning and on weekends.
COMPENSATION:
- Compensation is based on experience and scaled based on frequency of contribution.

FS Seeking Part-Time and Contributing Reporters

The FasterSkier team is looking to grow with the addition of part-time reporters as well as volunteer contributors.

Part-Time Reporter:

Those applying for the part-time position should be highly motivated and self-driven with strong writing skills and a thorough understanding of nordic racing. All FS reporters work remotely while reporting on various levels and topics relating to the nordic-skiing world.

Perhaps the best part of the part-time job is the potential for travel. Committed and proven reporters can expect to travel to one or more events throughout the 2015/2016 race season, including but not limited to the U.S. SuperTours in Montana, Idaho and Vermont, as well as U.S. nationals in Michigan, the American Birkebeiner in Wisconsin, and perhaps best of all, one or more of the Canada World Cups in Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and Canmore.

Part-time reporters are expected to manage their time and tasks on a weekly basis, with an expectation of working most weekends and at least 20 hours a week during the race season (mid-November through March). While covering events on site and in person, reporters are expected to work full time and around the clock to complete all assignments.

Clear and efficient writing is a must, and reporters should have the ability to produce well-crafted stories on a tight schedule — often within a few hours of a race.

Candidates should have a strong interest and desire to cover most elite domestic and international races (in the U.S. and Canada, and internationally) throughout the 2015/2016 season from the comfort of their own homes. A computer and reliable internet are a must.

Compensation will be paid in monthly installments and can be discussed upon inquiry. Ideal candidates should be able to start as soon as possible, possess a strong knowledge of nordic ski racing, as well as social awareness and interview skills, and be able to write effectively and efficiently on deadline while thoroughly proofreading all work. Keen communication skills are key as much of this job involves email and phone interviews, as well as frequent email check-ins and conversations with coworkers.

Contributing Reporter:

FS survives because of the enthusiasm and loyalty of our readers, and if you find yourself an avid fan of the site with a desire to write — even if it is just a few times a month — then this is for you! We compensate contributing reporters with equipment or gear perks based on the amount of work they’re able to complete over a season.

We need volunteer contributors in a variety of areas, from weekend to on-site reporting on some of the biggest events in nordic and biathlon racing, to regional contributors (i.e. Canada, and in the U.S., regions like the Midwest, Alaska, etc.). And if you specialize in biathlon or nordic combined, we certainly have a place for you on the FS team.

Must have a computer with reliable internet, desire to pitch story ideas and contribute on an as-needed basis, strong written and communication skills, and the ability to proofread your own work. FS is Hiring!
Always wanted to be a part of FS? Now’s the time! FasterSkier.com is looking to fill a variety of positions – part time and on an as-needed basis – as soon as possible, and definitely before the snow flies!

This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists and those passionate about cross-country skiing to dive right into covering all aspects of the sport. Positions range from part-time weekend reporters, responsible for international and domestic race coverage throughout the winter, to interns and contributors with computer skills and a flair for nordic.

You don’t have to be an international-racing expert, just an enthusiastic writer with a basic understanding of the sport and a strong desire to learn and improve your writing.

Staff members will work on meaningful projects, interview top athletes, coaches and officials, and potentially travel. Even volunteer contributors (who we wish we could pay) could find themselves in the mixed zone of a World Cup race, or covering something as exciting at the American Birkebeiner in the U.S.

Working for FasterSkier is a unique and exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals. You will be paid to travel to some of the best winter destinations in the world to report on ski races. Within weeks of starting you will be calling Olympic athletes on their cell phones. And you will be working with a great team, dedicated to pushing the envelope of ski journalism.

Weekend reporter:

Responsible for covering races remotely for about a dozen weekends (and certain weekdays) throughout the upcoming winter. Includes watching races live online (World Cup) and following up on results for non-televised events (i.e. SuperTour and NorAms). Should have regular access to a computer with reliable internet, and the capability of using Skype for interviews and composing thoughtful emails as reporting tools.
- Salary: Stipend based on experience and days worked
- Time frame: Late November 2014 to late March 2015
Part-time intern:

Will assist with interviewing athletes, transcribing fellow reporters’ interviews, and posting directly to the website (i.e. photo galleries, press releases). Must be proficient with computers and social media, and have a basic understanding of WordPress or an ability to learn quickly. Position is unpaid with equipment perks.

Volunteer contributor positions:

– Canadian contributor:

Seeking a native who knows the ins and outs of nordic skiing and biathlon in Canada. It helps to be connected or an avid fan that follows all aspects of the sport. Responsible for helping with Canadian coverage, especially with NorAms and national championships. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

– Para Nordic contributor:

Pick up where our incredibly dedicated former Para Nordic writer Mark Vosburgh left off and be the expert on all things related to adaptive recreational and elite Paralympic cross-country skiing in North America and beyond. You’ll be in charge of updating the Para Nordic blog as you please, especially as news rolls in, and the opportunity to get media accreditation for the 2015 IPC World Championships in Cable, Wis. (travel, room and board not necessarily included). Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

– Biathlon or Nordic Combined contributor:

Are you an expert in either of these sports? We would love for you to help us out with covering the North American teams on the Continental and World Cups throughout the winter. We have separate blogs for both biathlon and nordic combined, and the sky’s the limit when it comes to broadening our coverage of two of the toughest sports in nordic.

– Masters contributor:

For the ultimate “Master Blaster” who loves to write almost as much as skiing! Should be willing to pitch original stories on local, national and international content, then find the best method of reporting and writing them. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

– Travel reporter:

For those willing to write and report on-site as needed throughout the season. Unpaid with the reward of paid travel and seeing races live!

– Eastern-collegiate contributor:

Ideal candidate will be at most of the EISA carnival races throughout the 2014/2015 season with the ability to take photos and report on all events. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

– Western collegiate contributor:

Ideal candidate will be at most of the RMISA carnival races throughout the 2014/2015 season with the ability to take photos and report on all events. Unpaid position with FS schwag or gear perks.

All positions:

Ideal candidates will be able to start immediately and commit through the 2014/2015 nordic season, pitching ideas and collaborating on assignments with editors. Being available for Monday morning conference calls is definitely a plus, as all jobs are done remotely.

Intern and contributing positions are unpaid with gear or equipment perks depending on the level of the involvement and frequency of reports. Promising interns or contributors could be promoted to paid staff in the future and/or earn trips to cover events.

Prospective applicants should be highly motivated, strong writers and diligent reporters. Editors will expect several articles per week, encouraging interns to contribute “quick content” as needed. The remainder of the offseason (October and early November) will be viewed as a training period, and prospective part-timers should be able work most every weekend during the season.

FasterSkier.com is seeking energetic and committed interns to contribute to its daily online publication. This is a great opportunity for aspiring journalists and those passionate about cross-country skiing to dive right into topics involving all aspects of the sport. Interns will work on meaningful projects, interview top athletes and officials, and potentially travel.

The ideal candidate would be able to start immediately and work through the summer, pitching ideas and collaborating on assignments with editors. Position is part time with a small stipend and equipment perks. Promising interns could be promoted to staff status and possibly assigned trips this winter.

Prospective interns should be highly motivated, strong writers and diligent reporters. Editors will expect several articles per week, encouraging interns to contribute “quick content” as needed. The offseason (spring, summer and fall) will be viewed as a training period, and prospective part-timers should be able work on weekends during the season.

Intern expectations:
- Commit at least 10 hours per week
- Brainstorm, pitch and start working on noteworthy stories
- Stay current on nordic news, especially internationally, and post to FS blogs accordingly
- Produce content in timely manner (i.e. race reports, breaking news)
- Conduct several interviews per week, mostly via phone or Skype
- Contribute at least three original stories per week
- Join weekly conference call
- Be available to assist editors, reporters as needed
- Cover events, interview subjects in person when possible
- Proofread own stories as well as others’ content
