NNF: NNF Cup Celebrating Club Excellence Returns to SuperTour for Another Season

With the first round of SuperTour racing complete in Sovereign Lakes, British Columbia, the NNF is proud to announce the return of the NNF Cup as a presenting sponsor of the US SuperTour this season.

Originally launched in 2012, the NNF Cup celebrates club excellence in America’s premier domestic ski competition by tallying performance of club teams across the SuperTour season. The NNF Cup was awarded to Alaska Pacific University last season.

The recent success of the US on the World Cup and at the Olympic level has been fueled by a renewed commitment by US ski clubs to provide a club structure that supports athletes from their time as Juniors through to post-college senior professional racing. With the NNF CUP, the National Nordic Foundation wants to celebrate the spirit and creativity at play in providing US skiers with structured programs for their continued development, and nod to the competitive nature of these programs by adding a club-wide aspect to their performance-oriented goals.

NNF Board Chairman Yuriy Gustev says that, “Not only do the clubs create a positive learning and skill development environment for the youth, but they also provide essential support to develop athletes and surround themselves with high-level coaches and race service staff. The NNF Cup is a way we can recognize the efforts of our clubs, and our Board of Directors is happy to sponsor it again this season.”

NNF Cup standings will be updated weekly on our website. The full SuperTour schedule can be found here. Individual SuperTour standings can be found here.

You can read full recaps of each race from FasterSkier: including the Classic Sprint, Skate Mass Start 10 k, and Skate Sprint. The SuperTour heads to Sun Valley, Idaho this Saturday, and Sunday to continue its round around the West during Period 1.

NNF Cup 2013 won by APUNSC

The NNF Cup winner for the 2012/2013 season is the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center. The NNF Cup is awarded annually to the top domestic club on the USSA SuperTour circuit. APU showed impressive depth in its program by roughly doubling the points of Craftsbury, the 2nd place team. What was equally impressive was APU athletes gained these points with US based SuperTour racing while also amassing unprecedented results on the European World Cup circuit. Two athletes spent the full season on the World Cup, three athletes had World Cup top 10 results, and four raced at the World Championships. To top it off, APUNSC member Kikkan Randall won her second consecutive World Sprint Cup title, and also a World Championship Gold medal with Jessie Diggins (SMS/T2).

Here are some quotes from the APU skiers and coach:

“Winning the NNF cup this year was a really big honor for our team, it shows team depth. It’s really fun to be a part of such a strong team, it makes training so much easier when you see all of your teammates pushing so hard for the same goals.” – Erik Bjornsen

“It has been such a special accomplishment as a team to win the NNF cup. Every individual can have their own personal achievements; but the ability to be the best as a team means the very most. It goes to show how important each athlete, each coach, and each member of this club has contributed to a larger success.” – Sadie Bjornsen

“Winning a award that is a result of a team effort is a huge honor. It speaks to the hard work everyone involved with APUNSC does every day and shows the tremendous depth our team has built over the recent years. I am ecstatic to have had the opportunity to be part of such a great club.” – Rosie Brennan

“Winning the NNF Cup is a tremendous honor and speaks to the depth and strength we’ve been working hard to build in the APU program over the last decade. It was really inspiring to see success throughout our club at every level and we are very proud to be bringing the cup back to celebrate with our whole team.” – Kikkan Randall

“It has been such a special accomplishment as a team to win the NNF cup. Every individual can have their own personal achievements; but the ability to be the best as a team means the very most. It goes to show how important each athlete, each coach, and each member of this club has contributed to a larger success.” – Sadie Bjornsen

“It is an honor to be awarded the NNF cup. This season we had numerous personal best from world champions, world cup, USSA junior club award, and super tour results. What is really special about the NNF cup is that it is a team award. I believe it takes a strong team to excel in cross country skiing. I am proud of my team for bringing home the cup!” – Erik Flora, Head Coach

    About the NNF Cup

While Nordic Skiing is considered an individual sport, no athlete can do it alone. Just ask Kikkan (APU), Jessie (Stratton), or Noah (Ski and Snowboard Club Vail). Our ski clubs support our skiers and our sport from first time skiers to elite racers and masters. They are the foundation of the sport we love in communities from Boston to Minneapolis/St. Paul to Wausau, Durango and Fairbanks. The NNF Cup was started to promote competition between clubs and recognize the top club in the country though head to head racing.

  • NNF Cup 2013: Post-Nationals Standings

    NNF logo

NNF announces the 2013 NNF Cup post–Nationals standings. The NNF cup was launched in the 2012 season to increase the awareness of America’s premier cross country club programs and simultaneously increase the competitive nature of these clubs to entice them to strive to even do even better. CXC won last season’s inaugural cup followed by APUNSC and then SVSEF. The 2013 NNF Cup post-Nationals standings have APUNSC with a commanding overall lead, more than doubling the second place Sun Valley (who is leading the Men’s ranking) with the Craftsbury Green Racing in 3rd.

While Nordic Skiing is considered an individual sport, no athlete can do it alone. Just ask Kikkan (APU), Jessie (Stratton), or Noah (Ski and Snowboard Club Vail). They are the foundation of the sport we love in our American Nordic community from Boston to Minneapolis/St. Paul to Wausau, Durango and Fairbanks, where there are Nordic sports there is a Nordic club. The club programs develop and support athletes from first time skiers until they retire from the sport decades later. These clubs are the athlete’s teams and the athletes wear their club colors proudly. The competition between clubs to be the best is raising the level of support and success for the nation as a whole.  A rivalry between clubs makes everyone work harder. The NNF Cup aims to increase the recognition of what our nation’s top clubs are doing to prepare athletes to be competitive internationally.

While Nordic is considered an individual sport, no athlete can go it alone. The club programs develop and support athletes from first time skiers until they retire from the sport decades later. These clubs are the athlete’s teams and the athletes wear their club colors proudly.

The competition between clubs to be the best is raising the level of support and success for the nation as a whole. A rivalry between clubs makes everyone try harder. It starts the first time a young skier dons his club jacket that is most often two sizes too large. It continues at JO qualifiers and the Junior Olympics where athletes cheer for their teammates as much as themselves. And now an ever expanding support to expand post JO support through the USSA Super Tour is pushing this club rivalry (and our national aspirations) to the next level.

Just as a US athlete dare not show up to a US Ski Team training camp wearing a Team Norway hat. One best not show up to a SVSEF training session wearing an APU hat unless you are on APU. The NNF Cup aims to increase the recognition of what our nation’s top clubs are doing to prepare athletes to be competitive internationally. It also aims to encourage more clubs to step up and create their version of a the best club model.

    Support Tomorrow’s Stars Today

The National Nordic Foundation exists to help America’s young, dedicated, and driven Nordic talent realize their, and America’s, long term potential in sport and in life. The biggest hurdle facing American Nordic racers is gaining consistent access to international quality coaching, training, and racing experiences from ages 15 through 25. Providing future generations of U.S. Nordic athletes earned access to a progression of high-quality international competitions, their life enriching lessons, represents this nation’s greatest Nordic development opportunity and funding need.

The National Nordic Foundation and its Pillar Projects exist to fulfill this need. The NNF’s 2011/2012 investment in the cross-country discipline is a record $83,000. These strategic investments, made to Support Tomorrow’s Stars Today, are made possible by the generous contributions from over 1000 individuals who donated through the Drive-for-25 and other NNF fundraising efforts this fall. THANK YOU NORDIC COMMUNITY!
