We’ve all been there. A bad race, bad moment, or maybe it was a really good race with really bad photo timing. Whatever the case may be, we asked for your best worst-looking submissions and here are the best of the lot! (Photos appear in no particular order.)

With Halloween right around the corner, we thought it would be fun to launch a friendly photo contest, starting today (Thursday) and lasting through Sunday, Nov. 1.
Snap a photo of yourself (or a friend) in costume and enter for a chance to win, with prizes going to the winners of three categories. We’ll announce the winners on Monday, Nov. 2.
The categories are:
1. Best XC costume:
Since we’re about all things nordic, we’re guessing some of you will dress up in something XC-related. A simple spandex suit probably won’t make the cut, but a photo of you training in some crazy getup just might!
2. Best-dressed FS celebrity:
If you’re a current or former elite-level skier or coach (and your name has appeared in FasterSkier a time or two), then you’re game for this category.
3. Best-dressed average joe:
This is for the rest of us. No specifics here (just make sure it’s appropriate for young eyes). Creativity takes the cake!
Email photos with full name and mailing address to: info@fasterskier.com. In the subject line, write: “Costume contest”. Photos must be received by Sunday at noon EDT.
Birkie Facebook Photo Contest: “How Hard Do You Push Yourself and Your Gear?” (Birkie Facebook photo)
The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation want to know: “How Hard Do You Push Yourself and Your Gear?”
FACEBOOK PHOTO CONTEST
Post your favorite photos on Birkie Facebook and FITS® will pick the top three winners on October 30. Top three winners get a pair of FITS® socks (your choice) to get you to the Birkie and beyond no matter what type of beating you dish out!!
It almost came down to a recall, but the results are in for the FasterSkier First Tracks Photo Contest. We got a lot of submissions, and it was great to see evidence of skiers from all over North America gleefully enjoying early season snow. Podium prizes are:
First Place: FastWax glide wax
Second Place: FasterSkier Sporthill hoodie
Third Place: Skadi bootmate
Only the top three get prizes, but we wanted to share more than just three photos, so here are staff picks of the top 5:

Emilie Muller – East Burke, VT
Logan Hanneman – Birch Hill, Fairbanks, AK
Annie Hart – Dartmouth Green, Hanover, NH
Kilya Macneil – North Mountain, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

We’re pumped for snow. The first flakes are flying all over the Rockies, and Alaska has been gloating about powder for weeks already (and all summer, but glacial slush that never melts doesn’t count). Canada’s even gone and unleashed a stockpiled mixture of ice and thunder. And as of today, even New England can claim skiable snow.
Send us the best photo of one of your first skis of the season, and have a chance to be a champion – or at least win some prizes.
Theme: First Tracks
We know the first thing you do every winter when the snow finally flies is take a picture to make your friends jealous. Now you can win stuff for it too! The requirements are pretty loose — if you’re on skis and there’s snow on the ground, it’s game. You don’t even need to be in the picture, but there had better be some ski tracks.
First Prize: FastWax glide wax Second Prize: FasterSkier Sporthill hoodie Third Prize: Skadi bootmate
Email you entry to info@fasterskier.com. Please include the date of the photo, the location, your name and shipping address in case you win.
Deadline for submissions is November 12th.
Just to get you going here are a few shots from today in Western Massachusetts.
Tools of the trade.
Kicking and gliding – heavy on the kicking…
A little snow on grass makes for great classic skiing.
Before Petter Northug redefined the finishing kick, there was Thomas Alsgaard, arguably one of the greatest racer closers of all time. As the anchor of the Norwegian 4x10km relay team, Alsgaard regularly led the team to the top of the podium with his seemingly effortless domination of the homestretch. And as the mass start format became more prevalent, Alsgaard brought his prowess to those individual races as well.
In conjunction with our recent interview with Alsgaard FasterSkier and Madshus bring you the “Champion Moments” Photo Contest. Submit your best photo featuring an Alsgaard-esque race moment.
It does not have to be at the finish line, but it should be representative of Alsgaard’s race changing ability. Please include a clear description, as it will factor into the final judging.
The winner will receive a pair of Madshus 100UHM poles, with smaller prizes for second and third!
You probably forgot about it, but way back in the fall we held the first Madshus/FasterSkier Vintage Photo Contest. We decided to make the contest “vintage” as well as the photos, by waiting far too long to announce the winners. Well, good things come to those who wait!
Thanks to Madhus for sponsoring this contest!
All photos entered had to be from 1994 or earlier. We have a few “guest” submissions. Peter Hale of Madshus dug into his archives for some great shots – he was obviously not eligible for prizes but wanted to add to the selection.
Prizes:
1st – Madshus backpack
2nd – Madshus ski bag
3rd – Madshus baseball cap and beanie
We also gave away a pair of skis as part of this contest. The lucky winner has been notified.
Our panel of judges voted, and here are the winners!
First Place – Tim Kelley
3/6/75 – 1975 Jr. Nationals. Besides the trademark 70?s drool, this picture shows Fischer fiberglass skis the first year they were available in the US, Lilljedahl aluminum poles (graphite poles would arrive the next year) and Suveren leather boots with fancy Bergens plastic bindings. Don?t look too close, but the Eastern Ski Association one piece Odlo suit does not have a zipper in front. I didn?t realize I had been given a girls suit until I got to JNs. So, perhaps this is the only time a cross-dressing guy has won the JNs?! 😉
Judges’ Comments:
“Black and white contrast, the movement in the photograph, the drool, the look of utter determination.”
“The cutting edge technology, the event and who it is all adds up to a photo which is quite good on its own.”
Second Place – Edgar Hee
2/21/88 – Tahoe Donner XC President's Day Race Junior
Judges’ Comments:
“Interesting angles of all the equipment, great clothing and even better glasses – I think I saw those on the runway in Milan in 2009.”
“Wow: look at the height of that skate pole! And the glasses.”
Third Place – Dave Newton
2/15/49 – Dave Newton – First Place Maine State Collegiate Ski Championships 02/15/49 18 K Race @ Orono, Maine
Judges’ Comments:
“The onlooker makes this one the winner. a) not looking at the skier b) fancy coat and cigar and black shoes”
“I love the history, the young man in the background smoking a pipe and the high speed of the racer. Plus someone took the time to find this old photo and keep it all these years.” All Entries:

April 1974 Pal Tyldum (Norway), at North American XC Championships, Big Sky Montana. These were the waning days of wood skis at major championships, just a month following the World FIS Nordic Championships in Falun and the revolutionary success of fibreglass skis there. Tyldum, medalist at three consecutive Olympics, shows that good classic skiing doesn’t change that much, regardless of the skis. Photo: Peter Hale
December 1989 Salt Lake City World Cup, at Mountain Dell, Salt Lake City. Pal-Gunnar Mikkelsplass of Norway, showing again that good strong and relaxed classic skiing doesn’t change. This early-season World Cup, moved from Jeremy Ranch to Mountain Dell, introduced many US skiers to top racers from around the world years before the 2002 Olympics came to Salt Lake City. Lasserud, winner of more National and World Masters championships than most people can count, is equally noted for his coaching and inspiration to countless others, to start and stay in Nordic skiing. February 1980 Juha Mieto of Finland, in the 1980 Olympic 30km at Lake Placid, where he won three medals. At 6’7″ or so, the ever-popular Finn could cover an impressive length of the course with each double-pole or classic stride, and when it counted, Mieto never backed off. Photo: Peter Hale

This is really it! The last opportunity to enter the drawing for a free pair of Madshus Hypersonic Classic Skis! The Deadline is midnight Pacific Time. There seems to be some confusion – you do NOT need to submit a photo to the Madhus/FasterSkier Vintage Photo Contest to enter the drawing for the skis. This is a free pair of $500 skis we are talking about here!
The photo contest deadline is the same. Enter your pre-1995 photo for a chacne to win one of several additional photos form Madshus.
Both the raffle and the Photo Contest use the same entry form, but to enter the ski drawing you only need to enter your email address and click the opt-in check box. There have been some reports of Windows users receiving an error message when attempting to submit the form. This problem has been fixed.
The Madshus/FasterSkier Vintage Photo Contest and Ski Drawing was supposed to close today, but we are extending the deadline an additional two weeks. We have received a number of great photos, but more is definitely better. Also, you don’t need to enter the photo contest to enter the drawing for a pair of 2008 Madshus Hypersonic Classic skis. These skis retail for $500 and while the Nanosonic has stepped ahead as Madshus’ top-of-the-line ski, the Hypersonic is still one of the best on the market.
Cross-country skiing has a rich and varied history – from epic battles between Olympic greats to continuing evolution of technology and technique. FasterSkier is giving you the chance to share a part of your personal skiing history through the the first FasterSkier Vintage Photo Contest, generously sponsored by Madshus. Open up those old albums and shoe boxes full of photos, scan them, and email them to us. Win prizes from Madhus, and more importantly be crowned the Madshus/FasterSkier ‘Vintage’ Photo contest champion.
Additionally, all entrants may choose to be entered in a drawing for a pair of new 2008 Madshus Hypersonic Classic skis (please see details below). You do not have to submit a photo to enter the drawing for the skis.
Theme: “Vintage”
All photos must be at least 15 years old (taken in 1994 or earlier) and have something to do with Nordic skiing! All entries must be digitally submitted by the photographer using this form. If you just want to enter the drawing for the skis, please use the same form.
The deadline for the contest is:
12:00 Midnight, EST
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Photo contest winners will be posted in a gallery as soon as possible following the conclusion of the contest.
Anyone can participate regardless of whether you are a professional or an amateur. You can submit up to THREE photos per person, maximum! Images will be judged by FasterSkier.
Best of all, this contest is FREE! There are absolutely no entry fees… so enter today!
Are there prizes? Yes. But just think, you’ll get your really cool picture posted on FasterSkier as part of a winning photo gallery. Find your best photo and send it along. It only takes a few minutes minutes.
Requirements:
All files must be in jpeg format and less than 1mb in size. All photos must be accompanied by a caption including the location and the names of any people in the photo.
Prizes:
1st – Madshus backpack
2nd – Madshus ski bag
3rd – Madshus baseball cap and beanie
Ski Drawing:
You may choose to enter the drawing for a pair of new 2008 Madshus Hypersonic Classic Skis. There is a checkbox on the entry form to opt-in. By opting in, you agree to have your email address shared with Madshus. You do not have to enter the photo contest to participate in the drawing. If you do not opt-in, your email address will be kept completely confidential.
The crew at FasterSkier dusted off a few of their own to get you fired up to participate in this fun contest. Bad suits, bad sun glasses, too many neon colors, and worst of all t-grip ski poles… check, check, check and unfortunately CHECK!

At long last, the votes have been tallied from the Swix/FasterSkier Photo Contest III. We assembled a panel of judges, including a professional photographer, a designer, several ski coaches, and the FasterSkier staff, to vote on the the submissions.
We have included comments from some of the judges.
A-Final Podium
First Place
Mitch Dion on the Mount Rose to Brockway Summit tour in 2006, with the 3,000ft. drop to Lake Tahoe just to his left. May 6, 2006 – by: Mark Nadell
“This picture is stunning- It caught my eye right away. At first I didn’t think it showed spring other then the sun and light layers of clothing, but then I learned about crust skiing, only to be done in the spring. The composition of the photograph works nicely. It gives a wonderful sense of environment showing the viewer how high up the skier was, with the clouds below. Very well done.”
Second Place
Cross-Training – by: Adam Terko
“Playful and creative, this photo captures the essence of the transition time of the spring. Too bad the day wasn’t sunnier.”
Third Place
Tav Streit cranks some gnarly turns above Eagle Lake, Desolation Wilderness, Lake Tahoe. April 20, 2009. – by: Mark Nadell
“This photograph is a great action shot. The spectacular waterfall in the background adds a wonderful sense of drama, and the skier, both skis almost completely off the ground, has been captured nicely, although I do wish his back wasn’t to the camera. Nice composition!”
Fourth Place
Tav Streit explores the beauty of the Mount Rose ridgeline high above Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. April 18, 2009. – by: Mark Nadell
“Another crust-cruising shot, we see a skier taking advantage of the conditions to explore a remote area. The precipitous drop and line of cliffs gives a sense of adventure and the excitement of exploring the unknown.”
Fifth Place
Trina Hosmer joined the fun with the Mount Washington Nordic Club for their annual spring ski tour. – by: Amy Patenaude
“At first glance this photograph comes off as any other snapshot. When I stopped and really looked at it I loved it. This image tells a wonderful story and shows just how crazy cross country ski lovers are. They will do anything for that last patch of snow when the spring arrives, even ski on dirt roads. I also like how the woman knows just how crazy the adventure is. The photographer really captured a great moment, and a great energy.”
Sixth Place

“Technically and visually stunning, this photograph does a great job of capturing the spirit of warm, sunny spring events. Play.”

One of the last skis of the year for the Carleton ski team! For those of you who know the Gatineau, the ski to the fire tower from Meech Lake is hard to beat in late March/early April. This day was no exception. It was clear, sunny, ten degrees and enough snow remained to get us out there without taking our skis off!

A-Final Podium
First Place
"Robyn Anderson in sprint qualifying", UVM Carnival 2008. by: Andrew Gardner
This photo made it into the top 5 of every judge.
“A beautiful photo that captures the solitary nature of ski racing. ”
Second Place
2006 Torino olympic game on february the 12th at Pragelato, by: Romain Caroni
“This is a stunning shot and from someone who was at the Torino Olympics this picture really captures what it was like to be at one of the races – the angle and the composition gives the viewer a good sense of the intensity – How many racers there were, the crowd, etc. The light works to give the shot nice highlights and shadows. ”
Third Place
“Nothing left”, March 2008 at the world masters in McCall, Idaho. by: Thomas McGoldrick
This photo was the top pick of several of the judges and contains so much of the racing environment – the whole story as it were.
“This image tells a story. The two skiers collapsed at the finish line. More skiers coming in behind them. The woman running to assist, and the man pointing, straight at the camera. The upper frame is taken up by a full crowd. This image makes me want to know more – Who actually won the race? The composition works nicely with the closest racer off center and the skiers in the background in the middle of the frame anchoring the photo.”
The Rest of the A-Final
Fourth Place
"Every inch counts!", Swedish National Cup, men 19-20, sprint final, Orsa Grönklitt, Sweden, by: Erik Nilsson
