What’s New and Trending for 2016 (As Seen in West)

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — FasterSkier walked the floor of the 2015 Yellowstone Ski Festival Expo and found some interesting gear hidden behind those piles of stickers and schwag. Mohair-skin skis, carbon-soled boots and athlete-inspired clothing were common themes among the exhibitors. Take a look through our gallery below.

Podiumwear sales rep Kyia Anderson shows off one of the custom ski suits that Jessie Diggins helped design. A portion of the sales goes toward supporting Diggins.

BeFAST Sportgear, based in St. Paul, Minn., showed off their American spirit with this trendy neck gaiter.

Borah Teamwear showed off its new one-piece suits. This suit, made for Alaska Pacific University, uses an innovative seamless design that builds the suit as a whole rather than a sewn-together top and bottom.

New for 2015, Salomon’s Carbon Skate Lab features a ThinPly carbon construction and three different base setups, cold, wet and universal.

Rossignol’s R-Skin is built on the popular Rossignol Delta chassis and is perfect for a quick, worry free and wax-free ski.

Fischer’s Twin Skin joined the plethora of new mohair skin skis. The offset skins free up the ski in the gliding phase, and the 70-percent mohair to 30-percent poly mixed skin is replaceable. The skin length varies depending on ski length.

Alpina Sports is bringing their footwear line to the U.S. The line includes performance light hiking shoes, casual footwear and hiking boots.

Fischer’s new Speedmax skate boot uses a full carbon sole and reduced padding in the liner to cut weight for a maximized performance.

The Alpine Elite 2.0 skate boot features a one-piece carbon sole and a proprietary carbon weave along the edges of the carbon heel counter to eliminate any hot spots.

Yoko’s 9100 Kikkan Randall Edition poles feature a 100-percent CNT (carbon nano-technology) shaft with a design inspired by Kikkan’s style. The YXG Kikkan signature gloves include three models featuring different levels of wind stopper, plus a separate race line inspired by Randall’s international-racing success.

The Nano Carbon Race 100 UHM Poles by Madshus feature a new black-on-black graphic and heat-moldable pole straps.

Yoko Skis Launched at West Yellowstone Ski Festival

Yoko might be a relatively new name in the cross-country ski scene but the brand will surely be visible as the U.S. Nordic season officially kicks off this week in West Yellowstone, Montana.

Long known for making some of the nicest ski gloves available, Yoko jumped into the hardgoods marketing several years ago with a complete line of ski poles known for their incredible value as well as their flashy colors. For 2013-14 Yoko has created a line of racing skis that will be sure to get some attention.

The top-end Yoko YXR Skate skis are available in both a cold-universal and a wet construction and feature the Wedge-Shaped Frame. Both major binding manufacturers have been creating wedges to mount under the bindings for several years, but Yoko has taken this a step further and built it directly into the frame of the skis. The Wedge-Shaped Frame does several things, but most notably gives the ski a faster feeling especially in the uphills and also assists the skier to apply pressure to a more precise point on the ski, giving better power transfer as well as better edge control.

The classics-style complement is the YXR Classic which feature an elastic frame camber that compresses easily during the kick, but release quickly to allow the ski to glide incredibly well. Like the YXR Skate, the core is made of Hexcell honeycomb which gives the skis excellent torsional stiffness while being lightweight.

Both Skate and Classic YXR skis along with Yoko’s world cup level 9100 poles will be available to demo Wednesday through Saturday at the Outdoor Demo area at the Rendezvous Trailhead.
