Mudflat Mountain Biking
One of the most beautiful, quickest, and underutilized get-aways in Anchorage is ocean mudflats and marshlands. And there’s rarely a soul down there….maybe because it can be a perilous place if you aren’t aware of which areas are safe, the status of the tides, mud, ice, open hours of the Rabbit Creek rifle range, or access points. But if you check the stats and keep astute, there’s nothing

Warm Rain?
Today I learned that rain can be warm. I mean I think I knew that before, but I hadn’t ever experienced warm and muggy-feeling rain. I went for a run in my sports bra, and felt incredibly hot the whole way. During most of the day I have been feeling sticky and gross, which is kind of a new thing for me with warm humidity, so I have been washing my hands a lot. By about 2pm I was all pent up and ready to do something, so decided to go on a muddy adventure. It was an epic run! I started up the AT, which was muddy and slippery and rocky, as usual. I then ended up taking a shortcut, bushwhacking between two houses to get down to Trescott road. At that point, I ran to the top of Balch hill, a nearby nature area with a clearing at the top. The sun came out as I got there, so I lay down and took a nap. No joke! It was so nice, and I was kind of tired because I have had a cold and my heart rate was around 170 for most of the run up the AT, so I just lay there for a while, and didn’t get cold despite how wet I was. It was great. The whole epic really only took about an hour and a half, but it was really refreshing. Plus, now I legitimately feel like i am in Hawaii. Except that instead of POG I am drinking cider.
I am thinking about biking 50 miles on Saturday out to a lake and hanging out overnight. I don’t know if it will work out, but if it’s really nice out like I think it’s going to be, I might not be able to resist! Having recently discovered road biking, I am pretty hooked. I love it. I even jumped into some college races here at Dartmouth and ended up winning the women’s collegiate-C TT by 40 seconds. That’s only in the C bracket, but still it was a ton of fun. i would like to do some more bike races if I can find them, but I haven’t heard of any recently.
Anyways, that’s my rambly springtime update from Hanover! I have a little more than a month left on the east coast, so I am trying to soak in the heat! Yesterday it wasn’t hard, the temperature was well over 70. Luckily it’s not like that everyday: while it’s nice in small doses, I would definitely melt if it were always like that.
I hope everyone is having a great spring!Old School Campiona
In the days before index shifting and carbon fiber bike frames, the experimental Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth turned his camera to cycling. Atypical to film making today, Leth films with wide angle, long duration shots that let the story come to you. In 1973, Leth made two transcendent cycling movies. Stars and Watercarriers captures the perfectionism of the professional peloton from the Giro d’Italia in a simpler time. There’s a history and a certain beauty to the Grand Tours, three week affairs of attrition and resolve that trade in names like Giro, Vuelta, le Tour de France.
The Classics, though, are where its at. Instead of having to husband one’s finite reserves over two-thousand miles of racing, the Classics come as a one day Dante’s Inferno of martyrdom, as Leth tells it. Here, riding with heightened aggression and caginess are a prerequisite for a chance at the day’s greatest rewards.
After the riders leave the hard early spring racing from Italy and Belgium behind, events that trade in names Fleche Wallonne or Amstel Gold arrive. The crown jewel of them all is the Paris Roubaix. The name denotes the race’s 166 mile route from start to the finish north in Roubaix. This Classic presents a special challenge summed up in its alternate moniker, The Hell of the North. After 100 miles of mostly traditional riding, the roads give way to the Pave du Nord. These cobblestone pathways are so old – some trace back to the Romans – and so poor they are open only to farmers driving cattle, along with a certain bike race. It’s a race exclusive only to the hardest of men. Leth captures a young Eddy Merckx. He looks so dapper driving up the day before the Roubaix in this baby-blue-on-blue travel suit. Then, the next morning you see why Mercx is still known as the Cannibal.
My introduction can only do it so much justice. Here’s Jorgen Leth’s A Sunday In Hell. It’ll send shivers down your spine.

Gavin ends the season ranked # 15 J2 in the Country !
USSA has been doing a great job increasing the development pipeline within in the country. One of the major focuses has been identifying and supporting skiers at a younger age. Last year they started a National J2 Camp. Skiers qualify for the camp based on results at Junior Nationals. The top 20 boys and girls are invited to the camp.
(Link to the press release)The purpose of the camp is not only to identify talent but also the get that talent together to push each other to become better, become smarter, and also to have fun.I have been preaching that skiers from the Mid Atlantic division must attend JO’s at an early age. So may athletes wait until their senior year to make the trip. For some it may be the only time they meet the qualifying standards for others its the only time they decide to go. Like any major event it’s an eye opening experience. It’s also an important step in an athletes development. For athletes like Gavin he is being “identified” as a skier and will be on the “radar” for future camps and opportunities. It is an honor for no only himself to be nominated but to all of Mid-A.Mid-A has long and deep tradition of producing world class athletes and I believe that we can produce more !!!Get out the door and Train, Train, Train and Train some more because once the Train pulls out of the station it’s not stopping again !! Get on Board !Gavin ends the season ranked # 15 J2 in the Country !
