Ketchum, Idaho / Canmore, Alberta (April 4, 2011) – Fast and Female hosted its third and final X-Country SkiFest of the year on American snow this past Sunday in Ketchum, Idaho. Held under clear and sunny skies, the event was highlighted by the participation of 70 female ski enthusiasts between the ages of 7 to 19 years who had the opportunity to spend a morning of inspiration with 23 ambassadors – 7 of which are Olympians.

As part of the unique event, Fast and Female event participants kicked off their day with first-hand ski tips from some of the world’s best cross-country ski racers including Kikkan Randall, Liz Stephen, Holly Brooks, Caitlin Compton, Morgan Arritola, Chandra Crawford (Canada), and Biathlete Sara Stedebaker. All ambassadors volunteered their time to the event and dressed the part to ensure a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

“It was super awesome,” said 17 year-old participant Emily Williams. “We had so much fun dancing, singing and learning new technique drills. It was amazing to spend the day with these great athletes.”

After the skiing, all girls enjoyed a healthy lunch, took part in an inspirational speech, and concluded the day with a fun yoga/dance session.

“The speeches were really inspirational and not just for cross country skiers,” admitted Kailey Wilt, age 14.

In keeping with Fast and Female’s vision, each event segment served a specific purpose to motivate girls to stay involved in sports as a tremendous vehicle for reaching one’s personal and athletic best.

“The looks we saw on our athletes’ faces today showed us what an important message Fast and Female sends to young women,” added Kelley Sinnott from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Sinnott played a key role in coordinating the event along with colleague Ashley McQueen.

Throughout the 2011 winter, Fast and Female hosted three events in the USA, reaching a total of 470 girls in Maine, Alaska and now Idaho. Historically, events are not only inspiring for the young participants but even ambassadors leave the day feeling energized.

“It’s always refreshing to be reminded of kids’ energy and enjoyment of whatever they are part of,” said World Cup racer Liz Stephen. “Fast and Female is a wicked program and the local community and Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation did an awesome job with all the work!”

Parent volunteer, Gretchen Wagner, also commented on the impact of the day: “What an amazing group of women! It was great to see all of the girls inspired by these fast female heroes. Smiles from ear to ear!”

All event participants left with a Fast and Female t-shirt, Buff and autographed poster.

This activity was made possible thanks to valuable local partners such as the Works of Grace Foundation, the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, Cheatwood Photography, and many parent volunteers. Fast and Female’s national sponsors – including Best Buy, Buff Multifunctional Headwear, lululemon athletica, and Cold-FX – are also providing resources to make this event possible. • SuperTour Distance Title goes to Brian Gregg

Congratulations to Brian Gregg of CXC Elite!    Brian won the season’s SuperTour Distance title for the 2010/11 season.

    Hey Mark,

Had one of my best races ever up the hill climb on the final day of Super
Tour Finals today.  Lars and I were in a close battle for the Super Tour
Distance Title ($2,000 cash prize).  I started the race with a 7 point lead,
but Lars has beaten me in every skate race we have both been in this year.
My skis were flying today.  I have been waiting for some warm wet snow to
use my M1D.  They were ridiculous. That grind and those skis are awesome.  I
needed to beat Lars today to win the title and the money.  I ended up third
overall on the day which is awesome. Thanks for the killer skis.

  • An Old Ad For Fischer Revolutions

I stumbled across this ad for Fischer Revolutions the other day and it kind of kicked the old cobwebs out of my brain and got me thinking.
Wasn’t it the case that about 10 years ago Fischer launched a line of super short skis called “Revolutions?”  Is that what this is, or am I completely crazy?
The thing is, I vaguely remember seeing people skiing up at the Birkie trail around the fish hatchery

  • Spring (or Winter)? Continues!

Yesterday is a day we look forward to all year — The Sugarbush Triathlon.  The event tests your mettle with four events: a five mile road run, a six mile river paddle, an eight mile road bike and an arduous up-and-down xc ski on the alpine trails at Sugarbush.  Each of the events are solid challenges — and when you combine them back-to-back it makes for an event tough enough to, “rob you of your will to live.” (Luethi)

As you can tell she got over the pain of the final leg rather quickly as we basked in the sun and recreated our journeys.  It was a special day for GMVS athletes in a couple ways: Elena was our first GMVS female Iron Woman and she took second — David, coming off a stellar ski season was ready to take his coach (and race winner for past few years) down — and well… coach made it too :), David took second and JB third for men.

The skiing continues to be great — and a plenty ample excuse for not being in top running, biking or paddling form — it’s just too good to stop schussing.  Here is the snowpack on the south-west aspect of Romance Mountain high above Blueberry Hill in Goshen.  That’s a solid meter of snow folks.

Last week a few of us took a Catamount ski which took us from Waitsfield to Huntington Center, via the Huntington Gap.  Here we cross the Long Trail as we move from the east to west side of the Greens.  Over approximately five hours we covered about ten miles of trail with powder and transforming snow.  The corn cycle over the past weeks have made for the most amazing canvas to ski — you can literally go anywhere your mind allows you.

There is a bench between two hills below Mt. Ira Allen that always warrants a stop.   We stopped for a long lunch, as a broken ski and slow snow prompted us to make some game day decisions and limit our ski to half the original intended distance.  We took our time and shared the goodies from our bags; oranges, granola bars, sandwiches, coffee, apples, and Elena’s Doritos!  The sun was super intense and we were able to relax on moss covered rocks and have a unique peak at Sugarbush and MadRiver from the north — with their classic trails like F.I.S. and Chute picture-framed by maple branches.  From this spot we had a bit more skiing and then a 1500 ft. decent to the finish of the ski.

Ryley contemplating life and sun and dreaming of skiing again tomorrow.

The second and successful mend of Elena’s broken ski.  A ski pole was to rigid of a splint and it would snap the duct tape lashings which prevented the ski from flexing backward.  This splint of poplar made it though several miles and one wicked decent.  Elena gets GNAR points for sure for making this wounded ski last and never complaining about her misfortune.

A neat juxtaposition — and a reality when you have an amazing snowpack with consistent temperatures.  I was invited at the beginning of last week to a canoe, ski and camping trip on the White River.  We literally paddled in our ski boots and navigated ourselves to the bottom of steep chutes that ended riverside.  We had two runs of over a thousand feet and it was amazing how easy this mode of transport made this adventure.  Look at http://www.adventureskier.com ( a website created by Brian Mohr of Moretown) for more photos and thoughts about adventuring in the Greens and beyond.

A quick shot from my canoe of Brian and Emily getting down to the river and taking off their skis.  The woods on our second run were so open you couldn’t help but hoot and holler the whole way down…

Two springs in a row–  tele skiing at Mad River with and Olympian.  Last week, Devlin, Tim and I met up with Garrot Kuzzy and Bill Hegman (Pete, Jack and Ben’s Dad) to have a fun Nordic-Tele-Alpine rendezvous on the slopes of Mad River in softening conditions.

Antoine and Dev got some while we were away at Junior Nationals — including what some of the locals say was the best powder day ever…

The Woodstock boys: Fields, Tucker and Bassette after their sweep of the podium at EHS.  We look forward to training with these fellows this Summer!

Another highlight of my year, getting to hang out and ski with TC (Tim Caldwell) during Junior Nationals.

Ryley snapped a photo of me during wax testing before the classic race.

Ryley made a two-year goal this season — here he looks just fine in the New England JO uniform.  Ryley has made incredible gains — a hundred USSA point drop since 2010 — and we look for more from him in the coming year.

Elena Luethi — three top-tens at JO’s.  Super solid and super psyched to take her A – Game to Williams College next year and start her Carnival career alongside her brother.
An artsy little glimpse at the floor of my truck on return from EHS.
    Wax be gone.
And so it’s that time of year, so many directions to choose, so many adventures at our fingertips.
We have one more week together before Spring Break where we will reset our personal clocks, evaluate the 2011 ski season, and make plans for the summer and following year of training.

Life is none short of awesome in Vermont right now.

  • What Do I have on tap for Spring 2011? Offseason Recap!

    Picture

    Holmenkollen ski jump Oslo Norway
The season was over for our team on March 15th as we finished our last competition in Lahti, Finland. Our Team had just over two weeks to recover and do what we pleased. For many of us, we went home and spent time with family and friends. Others went on vacation, but I traveled enough during the winter and just wanted to stay in one place. After the season, I went to Steamboat for the first ever Ski 4 Yellow Event. It was a fabulous of an event and I had an absolute blast. Also while I was there, I had many powder days with some friends as Steamboat hit the 400 inch mark of fallen snow on the mountain. It was a very nice time in Steamboat, but I soon had to return to Park City to start preparing for the 2011-2012 year.

Its crazy to think that I am getting ready to start the 2012 season tomorrow. We won’t be starting with an easy training. Instead we will be doing physical testing that demands the utmost power, strength, and endurance. That will give the coaches the base for  what to look  for in the summer and leading into the winter. This season will starts our preparation and building towards the 2014 Winter Olympics.

For me this spring will be a very fun filled but busy spring. Most of our team has decided to change things up and race road bikes this spring and most of the summer. It will be a different way for us to train but also to keep us motivated on working towards the winter. I will be racing for Colesport here in Park city, Utah with Billy Demong, Bryan Fletcher, Nick Hendrickson, Brett Denney, and Biathlon athlete Jeremy Teela. I have found cycling a good way for me to cross train as it uses strength and endurance in the biggest way. It is also easy on the body as it doesn’t have the pounding on my body as  running.

As far as our training camps for skiing, it will mostly be the same. We will travel to Steamboat a couple times, and Europe a couple of times to mix things up and get the low altitude jumping and cross country training you need. I really look forward to see what progress I make this spring and summer as I look forward to next year! Stay tuned as there will be a lot happening this year!
