  • Fire

Tad Elliott and I packed up the car this morning to head back to Park City. It was a tight fit.

We were planning on stopping in Vernal, Utah to go mountain biking. Neither one of us has ever ridden there, and we wanted to check it out. After stopping at a bike shop in Vernal to get directions and a trail map, we arrived at the trailhead and started assembling bikes, only to realize Tad had left his quick release (to hold the wheel onto the bike) in Vail. We didn’t get our ride in.

Three miles before arriving home we passed a brush fire right next to the road (US40). It started today.

There was already tons of emergencyย personnelย working to contain it.

It was an amazing scene. There are lots of homes threatened next to Jordanelleย Reservoir. It’s not very far from Park City or Heber City. It may make training difficult this week.

When I got home I went for the ride I missed out on earlier.

  • Jr Camp Ski Walking

Perfect weather for ski walking intervals this morning!

Athlete “coaches for the day” got a head start and then cheered the group through.

Everyone did 6X7 minute intervals with 3 minutes recovery between each. The recovery time allowed the faster ski walkers to jog down below and work their way up through the group on each interval. This made for a busy trail, but allowed for great exposure to faster skiers.

This picture shows the girl in the light blue over striding (her hips are too far behind her lead foot).

Coach “big Gus” and “Boobs” stride up ahead.

These girls don’t look like they were working very hard :).

We all finished together and had the madatory pose with the Stratton Bear.

  • Vail Craziness

Tad Elliott fell asleep lying on a floating bed in Cal Deline’s pool. He got sun burnt.

We took several photos of it.

My friend and supporter Jon Schafer, otherwise known as Fast Big Dog, bought a new pair of Oakley glasses today.

    Then he bought another pair.

This evening we went to dinner at Cal’s parent’s house.

It’s got a golf simulator. You actually hit the balls, as hard as you can. Here is cal demonstrating:

It’s also got a shuffle board,ย Foosballย table, ping pong table and pool table.

And a weight room, complete with dummy to box against.

    Oh, and it looks beautiful.

    Cal’s room has a bookshelf.

It doubles as a secret room.

It was one of the most amazing houses I have ever seen.

  • Agility Work

This afternoon we skied up to Lot 1 and worked on balance, agility, sprint starts and finishes.

We started with a simple balance on 1 leg drill.

Then we moved to slalom courses.

Two courses were slaloms using both feet, 2 courses were for 1 foot only.

After the balance drills we practiced our starts.

    We also practiced finishes.

This isn’t going to be pretty…

     Sophie and Jessie.

We ended the workout with keep away/ hand ball.

We play this within a circle..goal is to get 10 complete passes before you make a mistake. No one can hold the ball for more than 3 seconds.
Tonight, we hear about college skiing and then hope to get a good nights sleep in preparation for a busy day tomorrow.

  • SMS Jr Camp Classic Ski/Specific Strength

After a good nights sleep, everyone was ready for our classic technique and specific strength workout this morning. We started by splitting into groups and working on technique for 30-40 minutes.

Tess does the “running” drill and gets into a nice forward position.

     Lizzie does the “shuffle” drill.

The older girls warm up and work on striding.

Then…the workout begins… everyone did at least 1 hour of continuous d-pole and single pole skiing.

     Concentration…

     Chasing rabbits…

    Receiving encouragement.

     Pushing each other.

     Working it…

     Coaching in the sun.

     Julia.

Single pole…perhaps a bit too much butt wiggling from some here.

Happy to have done a good workout.

    Working hard.

     Roommates hammer on each other.

     yap, yap, yap…

Almost looks as if the leaves are starting to change.

Our am workout was followed by a dip at Pikes Falls, then it was back for lunch, a talk from Liz on Goal Setting, some video review and then skate drills.

  • Strength Test and Summer Skiing

On Wednesday we completed our second Canadian Strength Test of the summer. We completed our first test on the second day of practice and now almost two months later it was time to look in the mirror again.
    (The group just getting started)
As a group the results were positive. I have not calculated the scores yet but most of the athletes were comparing there results as soon as they had finished and almost all of them had improved. That’s what it’s all about !
After the strength test we headed out for a ski and some relay races ! For the first time this summer it was not on roller-skis !

  • Vail Training

I had a great two and a half hour run this morning with a big crew from Ski and Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV). This afternoon, Ryan Scott and I did a two hour double pole with Eric Pepper supporting us on a road bike. It was another good session. This evening a friend and supporter of mine, Jon Schafer, otherwise known as Fast Big Dog, arrived in town. Schafer is going to train with us tomorrow morning.

This photo is from our walk to dinner tonight. From left to right, Jon Schafer, Eric Pepper, Tad Elliott, and Dan Weiland.

I learned a lot about SSCV today. It is an amazing ski club. Besides the huge number of National Team skiers I mentioned in yesterday’s post, SSCV has possibly the bestย developmentย system in the country, if not the world. Recently, they opened the new Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy. It is a public school, part of the Eagle County School District. It is free. Every student at the school is a member of SSCV. The school calendar and schedule are tailored to athlete’s training needs. Every class is integrated with online work, ideal for kids who miss a lot of school. There are world class Nordic trails right out the door. Next year it will have a brand new strength and conditioning building. In two years there will be dormitories and a dining hall. The Nordic coaches, Dan and Eric, run up to twelve training sessions a week for the athletes.

If I were in high school and wanted to compete in Nordic skiing at a high level, this is where I’d want to be. The vision, commitment to success, and ability to turn dreams into reality of SSCV is outstanding.

  • World Cup Finals

Here are some videos of the final three World Cup races that I reached the podium on last season.

    Drammen:
First ever podium. It was such an amazing feeling crossing the line in second. Reaching the World Cup podium had always been a lofty goal in my eyes, so to actually reach the podium was an unbelievable moment for me.

    Stockholm:
Not even a week later the World Cup Finals sprint was held in downtown Stockholm. This was a really cool venue, situated right on the King’s Royal Palace. I had a horrible qualifier in this race. I tried to double pole the classic sprint qualifier but I did not have the arm endurance to lug my body up the hills with just my arms. Luckily I just squeaked in with a 30th place qualifier.
The heats were a different story. I went back to skiing with classic skis and it felt much better. I advanced to the final and had a close finish at the end for a bronze medal.

    Falun:
My final podium of the year came in the 15km Classic race in Falun, Sweden. My strategy in this race was to keep my heart rate controlled. On the long and steep climb I would let the rest of the guys gap me and then I would efficiently catch them again on the downhill and the gradual sections.
When I crossed the finish line I was in complete shock. I still really hasn’t set in yet. I never thought I could ever reach the podium in a distance race.
I hope you undertand russian! this is the only video of the 15km race I can find.

  • SMS Jr. Camp Day 1

We started our Junior camp today with a great group of skiers. Our first workout was a skate technique and L3 workout. Most people got 30-40 minutes of good fast skiing in. Our main goal was to follow some really good skiers. With this in mind, not everyone did exactly the same workout. The strongest skiers did 3X4km of L3 while others were encouraged to “jump in” and follow for sections.

Parker Tyler dropped in to help out and do the workout. She and Sophie (above) both made the US Jr World team while in high school AND they teamed for a bronze medal at Sr Nationals in the team sprint when they were in 12th grade!

We started with drills and technique work.

     Then got to work ๐Ÿ™‚

Follow the leader… everyone was encouraged to follow our SMST2 skiers.

     Clara jumps in behind Parker.

Issy P attracted quite a following of the younger girls every time she went through.

The lead boys pack on their last 4 km interval.

     Mac follows Erika.

Poppet and crew made some good technical gains.

     …all aboard!

After the workout we took a swim and then headed back for dinner.

Our evenoing entertainment included 2-3 ball soccer (including the physio ball), followed by a training talk and video review. Then it was off to bed..time to recover and rest up for tomorrow!

  • Vail

Early this morning I drove to Vail for a three day training camp with my Team Homegrown/Ski and Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) Team. It’s great to be here with a bunch of great up-and-coming athletes. This morning we did 4 by 12 minutes classic threshold (a pace you can sustain for at least an hour) intervals. Then my teammate Tad Elliott and coach Dan Weiland got some good screen-time in the middle of the day (I did too.)

In the afternoon we trained at the aptly named SSCV strength room:

It was fun to have a big group of motivated skiers training together.

On the front of the strength building, SSCV has life-size cutouts of all their athletes on the USST.

    There are a lot.

    And a few more.

This is one of the greatest ski clubs in the country and I’m honored to be apart of it.

  • Double-Pole Test take 2; Pics from Monday

We only had about 18 athletes do the double-pole test last week, so today we went back to Richmond and had another opportunity to ski the course before fall sports begin.  I was worried that we might have a small group today — boy was I wrong. I counted 32 or 33 athletes! The boys’ course record (which was set last week) was broke today…twice. We also got in a lot of technique work including 1-pole skiing and no-pole skiing.

At the end of training we had an informal All American certificate presentation. Henry Harmeyer and Ben Hegman were both on the podium at Junior Nationals last March, and they earned All-American status from the United States Ski Association for those performances. I think there will be even more of those in 2013 and beyond.

This past Monday we had about 32 athletes at the Range for a skate rollerski. We’ve really been trying to get a lot of time on rollerskis now that everyone is getting comfortable on them. Thanks again to John Madigon and Algis Shalna for yet another opportunity for these athletes to practice their biathlon skills.

Here are times from the double-pole test today (PR from last year, if applicable):

    • Adele Julianelle, 6:13
    • Alissa Stone, 6:23
    • Tatum Braun, 5:11 **J2 girls’ record
    • Julia Snyder, 5:47
    • Callie Braun, 4:09
    • Sienna Searles, 4:23
    • Ethan Thibault, 4:40
    • Nathanael Kuzio, 3:18 (4:00)
    • Ben Longenbach, 5:18
    • Louis St-Pierre, 3:41
    • Ben Hegman, 2:49 (3:29)
    • Forrest Hamilton, 2:41 (3:05) ** new boys’ course record
    • Sam Longenbach, 3:15 (3:35)
    • Liam John, 3:05 (3:37)
    • Parker Francis, 2:59 (3:48)

Pictures from today are forthcoming. In the meantime, here are some photos from Monday 8/13:

  • SMS BKL Camp Wrap

We had our usual pre breakfast jog and stretch this morning, but we moved inside in order to keep our feet dry after last nights showers.

Coach John Goble (from Michigan) leads us in a new exercise.

After breakfast we jumped into our camp Olympics and started with a biathlon relay.

Then it was out to the field for 7 more exciting events.

Everyone was split into 7 teams and everyone competed in each event.

Coaches (and SMS T2 teammates, Sophie and Erika).

The Olympics ended with a skiing relay race, then it was time to pack up, have lunch, get our t-shirts and head home.

    WOW!

Abby with some of her group.

     Heading home…

    And still smiling ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks to all of the campers for being so energetic and to all of the staff for all of their hard work and encouragement.

  • BKL Camp Clean Rooms And Skits

Tuesday afternoon everyone we heard from Erika and Sophie about skiing in college and saw some exciting video from NCAA’s. Then everyone went through 3 strength routines (legs, core, upper body).
After dinner, we had entertainment for the staff ๐Ÿ™‚
Each year we have a clean room contest at camp. These pictures only show small parts of the rooms, so you do not get the true effect, but you can get an idea…. the rooms are great!

The clean room contest was followed by skits. Here are a couple of pictures from the skits.

This group actually made their own song and sang it!

     Nice moves!

     Some sort of horse race….

    ….that ended in disaster!

  • The Localโ€™s Show

I went on a fun 3.5 hour mountain bike ride this morning with Keegan Swirbul. Keegan is a young Nordic skier and mountain bike racer from Aspen. He’s had some great junior results on the national level, and I’m looking forward to watching him progress. He made me suffer on the bike today. Here Keegan is early in our ride:

This afternoon I got invited onto one of Aspen’s great local TV shows called The Local’s Show. The host of the show is a friend of mine Erik Skarvan. It was fun and a great experience for me.

You can watch the show we filmed today on the internet atย http://vod.grassrootstv.org/vodcontent/11063.wmv

  • Aspen

I went for a run this morning with my friend Zeke Tiernan. Zeke is an ultra-marathoner. On Saturday he is running the Leadville Trail 100. Today was his last real training run, and he wanted to get up high in preparation for this weekend. I don’t generally mind the altitude, but after living below 4000′ for the last three weeks, I was feeling it today. We were running at 12,500′ (3800 meters).

Zeke has a chance to win the race this weekend (he has been 2nd and 3rd in his two previous attempts.) I am excited to follow his progress on the internet (since I am unable to be there in person.) Here I am on the ridge above the ghost town of Independence on our run today:

This afternoon my mom and I went to a presentation by the Aspen Institute of a conversation with former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. Governor Huntsman is well spoken and has very moderate views. I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and would like to attend more of these types of events in the future. Here is Governor Huntsman (left) onstage with moderator Norman Ornstein:

After the presentation I spoke with Governor Huntsman. Utah has been very supportive of the Olympic movement and winter sports. I thanked him for his support.

  • SMS BKL Camp Day 2

We are having a busy day at camp! This morning we woke up for our pre-breakfast jog, stretch and goofy drills.
Each team got to show how well they did the drills.
…then they were rewarded with breakfast.
After breakfast we did a cross over hike from Grout Pond, over the mountain to school. Above, the younger kids pose for their picture before taking off on their hike.
Thanks to Power Bar for supplying us all with a bar for the hike.
1/2 way home…almost everyone got up the fire tower (ye gads).
2/3 rds of the way back….
    Heading down the mtn.
After lunch, we took a break from training and had 3 talks. Abby W talked to each group about “Life in BKL”. She went over all of the things that she does for NENSA to help encourage youth activity. Kate B talked to everyone about nutrition and the importance of a healthy diet. And Poppet talked to them about “Life after BKL” to give them some insite about what to expect in the future.
We then split into two groups, roller skiing and shooting (laser rifles)/ soccer.
Obviously this camera went with the roller skiing group. Pictures of the shooting/soccer group will soon be up on our smug mug account.
We finished the afternoon with a swim at Pikes Falls!
All smiles and ready for dinner and more games!
Here are some more pics from this afternoon..different camera..late additions.
