  • Running is Underway!

The cross-country running season is well underway! Once again, I have the privilege of helping with the Community School cross-country running team this fall. We have a very talented team whom has a very good chance of winning districts and qualifying for state! We’ve had three meets thus far, and have produced some great results!

The start of the girls varsity race

    All smiles after placing 3rd, 1st & 6th

The boys team proves to be quite strong as well. We are short one guy to race as a team. Five runners are needed to rank the team as a team. We are in search of a fifth guy before the district meet in a 1 1/2 weeks! Luckily we have our eye on a soccer player whom we hope to recruit:)

Max finishing strong, ended up winning!

Eric getting psyched and ready for the race

This week our team is a bit disjointed…we have several runners who are skiers as well, so five of our runners are in Lake Placid, New York for a ski camp. Once they return, we are headed to districts. Wish us luck as we head into some big races these next couple weeks!

  • Hello from Heber

I’m in Utah’s Heber Valley at biathlon national team camp for a couple weeks.  I was a little said to leave VT in peak foliage season.  Tim commented about how awesome the fall smells in the east, and I am missing that right now, but the west has it’s own special smells.  All the oaks and aspens are changing color here, and when it rains, the smell of sage permeates the air.
On Wednesday, we lucked out with nice weather and climbed most of the way up Mt. Timpanogos, Utah’s 2nd highest peak.  Mt. Timpanogos towers over Soldier Hollow, the 2002 Olympic venue where we are training, and I’d been dreaming about climbing that mountain for years.
When the thunderstorms aren’t too bad, we’ve been spending a lot of time at the range.  Between the gusty winds and cold rain, the shooting has been extremely challenging.  The coaches call it “toughness training.”
    Party on Mt. Timpanogos

    High up on Mt. Timpanogos

  • Week In Review: Friday Oct 8th

    The week in brief:

    • A quick post about how much more volatile biathlon racing is than XC, due to the influence of shooting, of course.  I probably didn’t explain the actual statistics very clearly in that post, so if you found it confusing, check out the comments.  Also, I’ll follow up on commenter Bolle’s question about changes in volatility through time sometime next week.
    • After that, just two posts showing the distance results for entire nations, but coloring the points by the age of the skier.  I didn’t have some big question or message, I just sort of stumbled on them while noodling around.  But it’s kind of interesting to watch the colors change for small teams with only one or two fast skiers.

Finally, you might recall the tag cloud for FasterSkier comments that I posted a while back.  I’ve been tinkering with a version of that for the right hand sidebar (scroll down a bit).  A friend helped me out with some of the HTML/Flash issues and I think it should be properly updating itself now (every 12 hours or so, which is probably more often than necessary).  So that should be a quick look at what’s been going on in the last 100 FasterSkier comments, or so.

  • Climb to the Castle

We awoke to a crystal clear day here in Lake Placid for the Climb to the Castle roller-ski race.  On Wednesday we had to move out of the OTC and it rained for 48 hours in a nice reflection of our disappointment to leave the comfort of the cafeteria, laundry, ice baths and warm showers.  We did move in to a really cool house though.  Jenny has a college friend with a beautiful place on Lake Placid.  I wish we had played hide-and-go-seek there, it was huge.  Each of us had our own bedroom.   On the downside the place had already been winterized so we were without water and such a big place took some time to warm up.  (Thankfully we were able to flush one of the toilets by filling up buckets of water from the lake)

    Beautiful Day in Lake Placid

It was fun to ‘race’ again today.  Newell, Liebsch and I skied most of the race together.  We had a fun last kilometer to the finish with the strong headwind.  The draft was pretty intense and it took awhile for us to break apart.  After several failed attempts by each of us Newell was able to pull away.  When he went it was very decisive and impressive.  The guy is fast.  It was great to race again.  The day also marked stage 2 of the Liebsch/Gregg Tour de France (Stage 1 was the City of Lakes Half Marathon).  Matt has the yellow jersey by just 2 seconds.

    The Finish

Karl and I are enjoying the free wireless in the Albany Airport.  Our flight is delayed a bit but we are hoping to make it to the second half of the Bulls/Wizards game in Chicago tonight.  After a solid 17 days of training camp I am looking forward to taking a break.

Karl and I will be leading a clinic for Chicago XC on Saturday and Sunday.  If you are in the Chicago area come to our presentation Saturday night at the Univerity.  Email me for details.  Brian.Gregg@xcSkiLife.com

  • Four outta five ain’t bad

Quick congrats to Little TR (also known as Tim Reynolds) for being the only GRP man not to leave his breakfast on the Whiteface Toll Road this morning.  Climb to the Castle 2010 was a suffer-fest.

Timmy was 11th, Matt 19th, Patty 23rd, yours truly 28th, and Big Dilly powered through a tough day for 41st.

On the ladies’ side, Ida was 5th, Hannah 8th, Chelsea 9th, and Lauren 11th.

Full results here: men and women.

  • Ketchup from Ketchum

After an awesome camp in Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho, I headed to The Dells in Wisconsin for the 2nd annual century bike ride for Shelley Glover. Now, every town has their thing, and the towns that don’t, build some sort of large sculpture and call themselves the home of the largest banana or sheep or pineapple. See below.
However, The Dells is known as the Waterpark Capital of the World, and once you have been there you will understand why. The town is filled with hotels that have huge, medium and small indoor and outdoor waterparks attached, and it is a scene. However, I have found the ultimate reason to go to The Dells and it is for the road biking. Now I am not someone to toot the sport of road biking’s horn, as the way I see it, it is simply a good way to get a sore butt, neck and back, and buzzed by cars all in the same go. Plus most road bikes come with that handy little digital computer that insists on showing you how many miles you have gone and the speed you traveled them at, which really only makes the whole experience worse when you travel at an average speed of 2 miles an hour. So, I don’t go too often. However, on this particular Saturday I went for 100 miles with 2 very good friends and in an incredibly beautiful area. So, if you are looking for a beautiful spot to road bike or rollerski or ride your motorcycle or tricycle, head to The Dells. You are in for a nice surprise. Here are a few pictures from our ride.

Bonnie Glover and Keely Kelleher in the last 10 miles of the ride

    Hello Foliage! WOW!

Bonnie, me, Keely and Julia Littman at breakfast the morning after the ride

Keely and Bonnie near Devils Lake, WI. Next year in September if you are looking for a great Saturday activity in a beautiful place to benefit a great cause, come do the Shelley Glover Century Ride. You can check it out at: www.shelleygloverfoundation.com
Since the ride, I have spent time in Utah, climbing Timp, adventuring with friends and training hard.

    Me up on Mt Timpanogus

Matt at the top of Timp. Think BYU has been up there at all?
Now I am in Lake Placid at our last dryland camp of the season. Lots of intensity is on the schedule and has already started with the annual Climb to the Castle. To see pictures check out: http://www.nccsef.org and to see some video check out: http://www.dartfish.tv/Presenter.aspx?CR=p1490c6378m184593
We are staying at the OTC until the end of the week when I will head to Vermont for the last training block before we head to Northern Finland for the season openers.
  • Aging Ski Teams: Poland and Germany

Can you name a Polish men’s cross country ski racer?  Hmmm.  Poland has certainly been a one woman show of late, thanks to Justyna Kowalczyk.

Which makes the following graph (a continuation of the graphs in this post) not terribly surprising:

So here are some Polish men for you: Janusz Krezelok and Maciej Kreczmer.  Who was that older Polish woman who clearly retired in 1998?  That would be Malgorzata Ruchala.

Poland is another extreme case.  Germany is another team that’s been getting older, despite being a much bigger program:

We’ve already had a couple of retirements from the German team, so we’re starting to see some turnover.

  • Read for the Record

Yeserday I had the honor of being one of 5 women chosen to read to over 300 children at the World Cultures Magnet School and American Indian Magnet School in St. Paul, for the annual Read for the Record Event. The book was “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats, and since the theme was winter 5 women athletes were chosen to read and share their favorite winter experiences. Joining me were Olympic Silver Medalist and Captain of the Women’s Hockey Team Natalie Darwitz and Whitney Pratt, Carly Facchini, and Erin Layden of the Augsburg Women’s Hockey Team.

The Book Read Across the Nation

During the four years since it began in 2006, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record has continued to break the world record for the most children reading the same book on the same day with an adult in their life. The program is designed to draw attention to the reading crisis by pointing out nearly half of the children in low-income neighborhoods lag years behind their peers when they start first grade.

    The Readers

Nearly 3 million children have been involved in the reading day efforts so far, and an estimated 2.5 million were expected to join in Thursday. Jumpstart has raised $6.2 million for books and supplies and sponsored nearly 800,000 books for low-income children.

Breaking up into classes we had question and answer time.

Sharing my favorite part of winter!

Thanks to Morgan Bray for contacting me and letting me be a part of such a great cause. Thanks to all the kids who listened to the story and shared their favorite moments from the winter. It won’t be too long until we can enjoy a snowy day ourselves!
