  • Next Stop: World Cup Finals

The World Cup consists of all the best skiers in the world.  World Cup Finals are even more elite.  Competitors must be: Ranked Top 50 on the World Cup, U23 World Champions or Continental Cup Leader.   As the Continental Cup (SuperTour) Leader I have the good fortune of being able to compete as part of this elite field.  These races will be even more competitive than last weeks World Cups.

World Cup Finals are run as a ‘mini’ Tour, meaning you must compete in all races.  There are four races:

    Wed: Classic Sprint (Stockholm)

    Fri: 3.3km Classic (Falun)

    Sat: 20km Duathalon (Falun)

    Sun: 15km Freestyle (Falun)

We drove 7 hours to Stockholm yesterday on a coach bus with the Italian team.  I was happy to have some movies loaded on my computer (thanks bro).  We made it to town in time for a workout.  Only about an 800m loop but with one really good climb plenty of room for an hour classic with 7*20s speeds.

  • Kikkan 2nd in Pre-World Sprint

Congratulations Kikkan on 2nd place, earning another US Podium.   Newell finished moved on to the semi finals with a really good final lunge and finished 10th.

Perfect day for spectators and racers

    Kikkan leading the A-final

Marit Bjorgen has had an impressive month, including winning all 3 World Cup races in Norway.

Racing a sprint the day after the 50km was different.  The race felt very fast and short.  I do not like being so far out of the mix (+19 seconds) although I was closer than in Drammen (+23 seconds).  Trying to stay positive but I have a lot of work to do to close the gap.

Caitlin and I had a nice cool down ski and talk about what we need to do to be faster.  As a competitor it is frustrating to finish near or at the back of the pack, but it is hard to be upset when the skiing and experience is so fun.

  • And the training for next season begins!

Between being a bit sick last week, and also wanting to give my body a chance to recover after the ski season, I took 6 days in a row off from training. I think that is the most down time I have had in 3 years, and let me tell you, it was nice. 🙂 It makes me realize why the average span id=”SPELLING_ERROR_0″ class=”blsp-spelling-corrected”American/span is so fat – because sitting around and doing nothing but eat sure is easy! I did try to do a little bit besides eat. The extra free time gave me a chance to do more on the job search front, and I interviewed at two different dental offices last week. I also found out that I passed my clinical board exams, so between all of that the real world sure seems like it is coming up quick!br /br /I am back training now – and man am I sore! Nichole has been pounding the roads pretty hard now getting ready for the Marathon this spring, and as her loving husband this means I get my share of the roads too. On Saturday (my first day back training) I did a 6 mile run with her pretty easy. This was the first run I had done in about 3 weeks, and really for most of the racing season I usually only ran once or twice a week, and usually not more than 5 miles at a time. So on Sunday I could feel the previous day’s run a little bit in my calves. But Nichole was putting in a big day (18 mile run with the last 8 at marathon pace i.e. 6:30 mile pace), and she is feeling a little sorry for herself that she has nobody to run with her, so I suck it up and get out on the roads. I do 5 of her 9 mile warm up, and meet her at the high school where there is a 1.4 mile loop that, while still a bit hilly, is the flattest option we have here in Red Wing. She starts of at her 6:30 mile pace and I run with her for about half the loop, then I cut off and jog across the middle to meet her at the start point again and run with her for half the loop again. In total I did about 25 minutes at 6:30 mile pace with her, and about 15 minutes of jogging in between. Add in the warm up and the one mile cool down and I had an hour and 32 minutes of running on my second day back training. And that is why I am still sore 2 days later. Probably not the smartest training decision in the world, but I earned good brownie points at home, and I hope it will serve as a good kick-off to this year’s training.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-8652393187725969111?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Beginnings Endings

I wonder what I will remember. Not now, but years from now. Settling down by the water’s edge at the family cabin, watching the alpenglow slowly fade away, I wonder then what I’ll take – what I’ll feel the most – from these last days. The days and reminiscences under the banner Vancouver 2010. The highs. The lows. The gutters and strikes, peaks and valleys. A question whose answers can come only full with the perspective of time. My hope is that the good memories outshine the rest, and I’ll be able to pick up all the pieces from the rest, and, to steal a line from Jimi Hendrix, span style=”font-style:italic;”make an island / might even raise a little sand/spanbr /br /Seeing Bill and Johnny race away from their final pursuer up the final climb into the Olympic stadium, the rest of the world’s best nordic combined skiers strewn somewhere behind sent shivers up my spine. To see my old roommate headed to the finishline, arms overhead, taking America’s first ever Olympic gold in the nordic disciplines is the kind of moment I can only hope lands these boys on the front cover of the Wheaties box, and inspires many other Americans to get out and inhale and exhale a little oxygen. Especially in the cold of winter.br /br /The feeling of equipping oneself well, to laying out the performance I could on a big day – even if it wasn’t up to the standard that gets one’s name etched into the annals of time, that’s up there with seeing so many family and friends coming from near and afar to pack the sidelines, and cheer me and my competitors on live trailside. Thanks. Sometimes its the grandest of gestures and the simplest of words that mean the most. br /br /Then there’s the image etched in my mind of walking to the front doors of Osborn Elementary a group of fifth graders steal a couple glances back before breaking into a giggle, then running into the building and down the hallways to announce their penpal’s unannounced arrival back in class. Thanks girls, that made me smile then as it does now to retell the tale. br /br /Is it one of these I will remember? Only time will tell.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2691525267872963085-1696705631663477498?l=in-the-arena-torin.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Pileated

Eating breakfast this morning, I looked outside to see this pileated woodpecker on the bird feeder.  I’ve been paying closer attention to how I take photographs, and this is a great example of how, in my opinion, they’ve gotten better.

I first snapped a couple of shots from inside the house, through the window, in case the bird flew away.  However, there was glare in the window, the bird was back lit, and it was quartering away from me.  Hardly a good shot.  I then snuck outside through the back door and crept around the house to get to the side where the morning sun shined bright on the bird.  This shot was better, except Brian’s old car was in the background.  Not too appealing.  Finally, I was able to make it around far enough to get the white house behind the black bird, wait for it’s red mohawk to come out of the dark feeder.  Snap.

Once the bird flew, I was able to capture another shot.  Wish I could’ve set the shutter speed a little faster to get a sharper image, but I’ll get to that another day. . .

  • Spring forward

Time to reset the watch–and maybe even the calendar.  Somehow, we totally skipped spring and went from winter straight into summer today.  Yesterday I was skiing on the Birkie trail on icy, hard pack conditions and today I had my mountain bike out and was riding on the roads in shorts and jersey–and it was comfortable!  Amazing what a little sunshine can do.  However, I don’t think winter is quite over yet. . .

I’m continuing to train for the upcoming US 50km National Championship in Maine next week, trying to take advantage of the snow we’ve still got.  Put in a solid 3.5 hour distance ski with some of the local masters skiers yesterday morning.  Of course, it wouldn’t be a spring adventure ski without a little bushwhacking.  Here, everyone is regrouping after taking what turned out to be a “long” cut back to the same trail we started on.

    Tom, John, and Jeff

    Tom, John, and Jeff

Over the course of the morning, the crew kept getting smaller and smaller as work, family, and other obligations whittled down our group.  Needless to say, I was a bit toasted after skiing in the increasingly soft snow by the end of the morning.  Of course, it sure beats roller skiing (but that’s not hard!).

There was great turnout at the Ideal Market in Cable for my slideshow last night.  A big thanks to Mick & Beth for hosting the event and to everyone who could make it!  We definitely had a full house.

The slideshow was a great opportunity for me to share some of my photos and stories from life on the road and the Olympics with the community that’s been so supportive of me over the past four years.  It was cool to see such a diverse audience, from youth and high school skiers, to master skiers, and even people who don’t cross country ski.  Thanks to everyone last night, and over the past 3 weeks, who ordered a “Kuzzy” pizza.  Your orders raised $240 for my Olympic Fund, helping to pay for training and travel expenses, $1 at a time.  That’s a lot of pizza!
