Tuesday, February 23, the entire MVNT skate skied (carefully) from the Chickadee trailhead down to Patterson Lake Cabins and out onto Patterson Lake. What a fun way to end the season on skis together!

  • Winding Up, Winding Down

The Whistler Olympic Village is starting to wind down. People are packing bags and some are already on their way home. Volunteers and security are asking more and more frequently for pins missing from their collection. The dining hall is noticeably more empty. There are a few of us who still have some racing to do. There is definitely some beauty to having the 50k on the last day but at the same time it keeps us from really getting an opportunity to get out too much and enjoy the celebration. Last night I just couldn’t help myself.

It was all pretty mellow by almost any standard but after the Combined boys went 1-2 yesterday to top off an already amazing Games for them I had to check out the celebration. I had dinner with Annie, Hazel, cousing Karen and my parents before Annie and I went down to the medals plaza to see the boys get their hardware. Unfortunately we missed their medal presentation but caught the Alpine and Bobsled medals followed by Jimmy Fallon and The Roots! Awesome! One of my favorites and to see them live and the Olympics was sweet. Then we made our way to the US Ski Team House and the celebrations there. I skipped out early, I’ve still got the 50k coming, before Billy Demong topped off what has to be one of the best days had by anyone ever. Win a gold medal, propose successfully to his girlfriend, and then find out that you are flag bearer for Closing Ceremonies. So, so cool!

It was such a great mental break to get out for a little bit and see how amazing the Olympics can be. In addition to getting ready for the 50k I also have been getting ready for a surprise trip to Lahti, Finland and Oslo, Norway for World Cups the two weekends after the Olympics. Outside of North America I have only done two World Cups in Davos, Switzerland so I am pretty excited to get to race up there. Travel arrangements are starting to come together and a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has helped make that possible!

Tomorrow is pre-race day again. It feels like a long, long time since I raced last even though it was only a week ago and I am very excited to get what is most likely my last Olympic race underway. A little odd to think of it like that…

It’s pretty messy out right now and it should be like that through the weekend. Just what I have been hoping for!

  • Golden!

In case you haven’t heard, Billy “Golden Boy” Demong and Johnny “Hat Trick” Spillane built on their silver in the Nordic Combined Team Event and took Gold and Silver in the Large Hill event yesterday.  I was already back home when they raced, but we watched the race in the Team USA athlete lounge in the Village.  Our excitement was off the hook when Billy made his move going up the final climb to pull away from the Austrian and take Gold.  Of course, the whole Nordic team went into Whistler for the medal ceremony to celebrate the first ever Nordic Gold medal in the Olympics for the US!

Billy D on top of the podium.

    What a sight.

Todd Lodwick and his wife Sunny were on hand with Todd’s Silver medal.

    Yeah Billy!

The band “The Roots” played after the ceremonies to a capacity crowd at the Medal Plaza.  This tuba player was seriously impressive.

I usually avoid taking party pictures, but last night was a pretty special evening.  The US Nordic team took over the Spyder House in Whistler, sponsored by the Alpine apparel company Spyder, to celebrate the Nordic Combined team’s success.  Here, USSA Nordic Director John Farra recognizes the Silver Medalists from the Team Competition: Billy, Brett, Johnny, and Todd.

Johnny Spillane and Andy Newell.  “Hat Trick” Spillane won three! silver medals at this Olympics.  To my knowledge, he and Bode are the only Americans to have won 3 medals at the 2010 Games.

The cross country crew, Andy and Liz.

Billy’s to-do list for the day:

    • Win the Olympics.  Check.
    • Get named flag bearer for the Closing Ceremonies.  Check.
    • Get a shout out from Lance Armstrong.  Check.
    • Propose to girlfriend Kate in front of friends and family after winning Gold.  Check.

    (She even said yes!).

Billy Demong and Nordic Director John Farra.  Not sure which one is happier!

Liz Stephen checks out Billy’s gold.  “Man, this thing is heavy!”

    Sweet!

  • We’ve got the Fever.

Birkie Fever.  Things are heating up here in northern Wisconsin- the Birkie is tomorrow morning, bright and early.  We’re planning a 5:45am departure from our cabin in Springbrook, just south of Hayward.  It’s a fair haul to the start line up to Cable, and we’re going to be navigating it along with 10,000 other skiers.  It’s guaranteed to be a complete mess.

Ollie and Matt are resting upstairs- their fever seems to be much more severe than my own.  Matt has had a cold compress on his forehead all night trying to stave off the effects.  Don’t worry Pepa- this certainly doesn’t count as another sickness for the year, unlike that time Matt went snow blind.  Ollie has been taking on fluids like the Titanic trying to keep the numbers on the thermometer low.  Compliment that with a large dose of ski porn and he should be right as rain after crossing the finish line tomorrow.  Just what the doctor ordered.

Check back in to see how we’ve coped with the lingering symptoms- race tomorrow, dinner at the Sawmill, and up bright and early again on Sunday for the even long haul back to Craftsbury.  Pin it?

  • Eager like a bever!

The big one is tomorrow. It is Birkie time!br /br /I was in at Finn Sisu this morning putting the last touches on my skis (and to help out waxing some of the skis submitted for waxing at the shop). The recommended wax job for the Birkie is: a coat of Rex Blue, a coat of Rex RCF Black, a coat of Rex Olympico Moly, and 3 coats of Rex TK-72. It sounds like things will be pretty abrassive on the course, so that hard wax with the graphite is going to be important. Duribility will be key.br /br /There were a lot of other people in at the shop this morning too. Most of them were from out of town who were picking up some last minute items on there way to the race. There were 2 guys there because the airlines had lost their ski bags! Apparently the airline has no idea where their bags are, and could not even find a record of where they had been checked in. Ouch. One of the guys had a pretty good attitude about it (“a good excuse to buy new skis!”), but the second guy was coming all the way from Sweden (!) and was pretty bummed out.br /br /To make this weekend even more crazy, this Sunday are my dental board exams. I am typing this from the dental school computer lab waiting for a mandatory pre-boards meeting. From here I will be swinging through my parent’s house for some pasta, and then heading the rest of the way to Hayward to their cabin. After the race tomorrow I will unfortunately not be heading to the Sawmill Saloon, and will instead be heading back to the Twin Cities to get ready for my 7:45am exam on Sunday. This is the patient-based part of the exam, so it consists of scaling and root planing (a deep cleaning), a class II restoration (a filling on a back tooth), and a class III restoration (a filling on a front tooth). The dentistry should not be too bad, but if one of my patients doesn’t show up I might be screwed. At least I have the Birkie to keep my mind off it until the last minute.br /br /I have been going over the race in my mind the last couple of days, and I still havn’t decided on my final game plan. The last two years I have been the first or second guy who has not been with the lead pack (28th last year, 30th the year before), but I got there two differnt ways. Two years ago I went out and skied my own race and let the lead pack go early, getting into that second group and skiing easier from the start. Last year my goal was to stay with the leaders for as long as I could. Around the 18k mark I was spent, and Chad Giese and I both kind of fell off the back of the lead pack, and skied together for a few k before the second group caught us and we jumped in with them. Both methods lead to about the same result, and to be honest, skiing my own race hurt a lot less (until the last few kilometers, at least). It will be interesting how having two strong teams in the race (the Italians and CXC) will affect how things go at the front. In the past the Italians could pretty much control how the race was skied, but now CXC might be able to mix it up as well. I am glad it is going to be recorded again :)div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-98282134620856942?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • MRIs, sushi, dog park, and thumb surgery

Last week I had an MRI on my legs… 3 hours later I was un-hooked from the IV and sent home to wait for results. By the time the doctor called 48 hours later I was hoping for an answer to my leg problems. Well… I did get an answer. He said that when he went in to do the surgeries last year my muscle attachments have ‘retracted’ more than he expected. What it all boils down to is: he didn’t take enough off last year. He was concerned about taking off too much (which I’m thankful he didn’t do that!) but I am still having blood flow blocked to my lower legs when I ski… This can all be fixed with another round of the surgeries I had last year…
Since my legs aren’t going to be back in action for a bit, I decided it was time to fix my thumb that has been broken since my rollerskiing crash back in October. It has been taped up in a plastic splint to protect it for the last few months… but since the cartilage is gone, the joint is not lined up right, and theres a fracture even the plastic splint is having a hard time these days keeping the pain at bay. So surgery on the thumb is scheduled for Monday (March 1st).
There’s a line between being tough and being dumb, so its just time to start taking care of my body in all the places it needs healing.
Now that I’ve been at home for a while, I’ve had a chance to do some fun things… The other night I took a sushi making class, and it was great! I can now make some awesome spicy tuna rolls! I’ve also been taking my mom’s dog (Topper) to the dog park pretty regularly, becasuse there is just something about watching a dog joyfully tearing through the snow that just makes you happy. (It also makes Topper happy, and it wears him out so he doesn’t tear apart the house).

  • Enjoying the last days of the Olympics.

(enjoying an nice mellow sesh with my friend Sarah Daitch at the Lulu pad.)

Yoga is on the podium for best medicine. It was edged out by laughter and, well… medicine.

Juuuuuust kidding. Although I do really find the yoga makes me feel really good physically and mentally as it balances out all the striving with some chilling.

Chilling is not exactly what I’m up to… I rest a lot more when prepping for a race and today I did my last race of these games and now plan to get out and enjoy the scene a bit more. It was tough because even though I had great skis, a good start position and tremendous desire to push and fight, my race shape is several levels below what I need to perform my best. The kind and dedicated wax staff that I appreciate so much told me to consider today the first training day for Oslo World Champs skate sprint which will be this time next year. It was hard to get to these games, I did it, and now it’s time to cheer on my teammates in their 30 and 50 kilometer races and enjoy Whistler and Vancouver.

Looking ahead I’ll be at the Canadian Championships in Whitehorse March 14-20 and will then be working with Devon on getting our plan together to rock Russia 2014.

Thanks again to everyone for all the encouragement!

    Chandra

It was hard to get to these games, I did it, and now it’s time to cheer on my teammates in their 30 and 50 kilometer races and enjoy Whistler and Vancouver.

Looking ahead I’ll be at the Canadian Championships in Whitehorse March 14-20 and will then be working with Devon on getting our plan together to rock Russia 2014.

Thanks again to everyone for all the encouragement!
