During the school year we typically have 8 group workouts/week. During vacations there are at least 3 group workouts/week. The kids know this, the alums know this and we tend to have a great group.divToday we had our regulars plus alums from Sweden (Doug), Middlebury (Chase), Utah (Parker) and Dartmouth (Sophie and Megan). Alum Patrick Weaver (UVM assistant coach) was there too, skiing with his wife.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SzJ-buY3LxI/AAAAAAAAByw/gE18-0sj0Rc/s1600-h/IMG_1747.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SzJ-buY3LxI/AAAAAAAAByw/gE18-0sj0Rc/s400/IMG_1747.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418532316454006546″ //aOur goal for the morning was to get in some good specific leg strength plus some speed and technique. • Cookie Testing

The first period of World Cup racing has come to an end and I could not be happier with the result.  Taking over the Yellow bib in the last race really was a dream come true for me.  I am honored to be the first American to reach the top of the World Cup rankings.  I am also extremely thankful to all of the people who have helped me get this point.  This truly was a team effort and I can’t emphasize enough what an important role the entire team has played.

I am now in Oberhof, Germany enjoying a little down time for the Holidays.  I decided to stay in Europe over Christmas this year in order to minimize my travel time.  By doing this I gain a both recovery and training time, which will hopefully pay off when the World Cup continues and for the Games later this season.

After taking a few days to completely recover, I am now back to my normal training routine.  Oberhof received a nice Christmas present in the form of a snowstorm, so the conditions here are quite ideal for training.  I still have some improvements that I want to make before the Olympics so this is definitely not a time for me to rest on my early season success.  Of course I am still enjoying the Holiday season and I have been happy to test every German Christmas cookie that I can find!

    Happy Holidays!

  • White Pine Demo

Dec 20, 2009 White Pine Locals appreciation Demo day. Park City, Utah
A perfect day for a demo! Great snow, sunshine, free group lessons, rentals, and free lunch!

Lots of vendors on hand with free demo gear to try out. No wonder we had such a giant turnout!

The Toko Tech Team was on hand, and busy helping out skiers, and vendors with ski prep. Once again Toko High Flouro Paste Wax proved to be a great rub on wax to get those skis gliding better for 10 or 15k. It was great to answer so many questions on maintaining and waxing your own skis. Seems like alot of these new skiers are eager to learn the basics of waxing!
Thanks White Pine for hosting such a great Demo!
White Pine will also be hosting a Toko Wax Clinic on January 1’st at 5:00 pm.
This Clinic will be aimed at glide waxing, and more specifically waxing for the Wasatch Citizen Series race on January 2’nd.
This clinic will be provided by Toko Tech Team member Paula Hudson, and will be in the White Pine Nordic Center Yurt.

  • BethAnn Chamberlain Takes Sprint on Final Day; Mayo and Boutot Win Youth and Jr. Titles to sweep women’s races for MWSC

With a trip to the winner-take-all Olympic Trials Finals in Altenburg, Germany on the line BethAnn Chamberlain proved that she has what it takes with her win today, and vaulted into fourth place in the overall standing. Her score of 293.51 for the top three races is just shy of the qualifying standard of 294 points, so her fate is in the hands of the US Biathlon’s International Competition Committee. In her favor is the fact that she has been skiing very well all week, and her clean shooting today shows what she is capable of when she puts it all together.br /br /Chamberlain, who has struggled on the range this series, but skied well, shot clean to lead from start to finish. In second place was MWSC alum, Laura Spector, 5.6 seconds off the pace. Overall points leader, Tracy Colliander, had an uncharacteristic tough day in the range, missing 4 shots to finish 5th place, 1 minute 38.7 seconds back.br /br /In the Men’s field, Wynn Roberts took the sprint race with 2 misses, beating fellow Minnesotan, Lief Nordgren, who had only 1 miss, by 3.3 seconds. MWSC’s Walt Shepard, like Colliander, had his toughest day in the range, missing 5 to finish in 9th, 1 minute 52.4 seconds back. Russell Currier continued his blistering pace on the trails, but missed 4 shots to finish in 6th place, 48.6 seconds back.br /br /With the final Results are in it is anticipated that the US Team heading over to the final round of the Olympic Trials in Germany will be the MWSC’s Walt Shepard, Wynn Roberts and Lief Nordgren from Minnesota and Zach Hall from Alaska.br / br /On the Women’s side it will be MWSC alumni, Tracy Colliander, from Fort Kent and Durango, Colorado and Laura Spector from Lenox, Massachussetts. The third spot will be Susan Dunklee from Vermont. A final decision on the fourth Women’s spot will be made later today. br /br /Making it a clean sweep for MWSC Women, Andrea Mayo won the Youth Sprint today and Grace Boutot, last years silver medalist at World Youth Championships, won the Junior Sprint. Mayo has been skiing fast all week, but has had a tough time on the range. She found her shooting touch today, hitting 8 of 10. br /br /An announcement on the Youth and Junior teams for World Junior Championships will be made later today, but both Mayo and Boutot are expected to be named to the team.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6813061107698506856-7682359082756672512?l=mwscbiathlon.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • CGRP Ornament (and the County)

My Mom started a tradition to give her kids one Christmas tree ornament with special meaning every year. Usually they have to do with something we did or somewhere we went during the previous 12 months. The little duck is because that was my first word, there are ones from most of the countries I have visited, others from Gould and Bates. You get the idea. Now, after 24 years, the tree is something of a visual biography of me. It is fun to unwrap the ornaments and remember the trips or events that they represent. It’s also kind of scary; 24 ornaments seems like a lot. I console myself by thinking about how fewer ornaments I have than my older brothers.

Anyways, this year’s is a CGRP ornament crafted by my Dad. I won’t tell you how much colored ink he went through to get it just right, because it is decidedly un-green. But the ornament is perfect and much appreciated!

The new ornament front and center.

The new ornament front and center.

Just before returning home for Christmas Pepa, Matt, Ollie, Chelsea, and I, as well as a number of Craftsbury juniors, made the long trek up to the County (Aroostook County in Maine) for the opening NENSA Eastern Cup races. There was a skate sprint on Saturday and a 10 km classic mass start on Sunday. I was really happy with how the races went, especially the distance classic. I felt really awful for the first lap but held on and managed to have a significantly better second lap. There is a good lesson there: if the race is rough, just try to wait because it might get better! Also, does having a way better second 5 km mean that maybe I’m starting to get better at distance races?

Aside from the races, we got a first hand view of how incredibly large Maine is. I’ve lived there my whole life (until now) and it still floors me to pass Bangor and see a sign that says Presque Isle is another 160 miles further north. And then guess what? Fort Kent (location of this year’s spring series races) is another 56 miles north of Presque Isle. Wow.

And finally to end this epic post…a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Ida for doing an amazing job at the races in Canmore!!! Yay!!

  • Maybe? We Will See

Finally after at least 6 years of “NO WAY” . We have a “Maybe”.

That is the answer to the question, suggestion, encouragement to one “Chambo” to try Biathlon out.
I have been following Chambo since his college days where he was tearing up the tracks as a collegiate skier when I was coaching at St Lawrence. Later racing against him over the years.
It is too bad that he has not trained for Biathlon these past years.
Biathlon is an addictive sport. Very humiliating also. One can wonder why extremely talented skiers such as Lars Berger, and Ronny Hasfas compete in Biathlon where they constantly get punished with penalty loops when they will for sure have a chance of a podium in a “Special Race”.
As Josh Thompson would say: “Biathlon is a sport where you have to be smart enough to figure it out and STUPID enough to keep doing it”
Maybe I do not like Chambo and want to watch him to suffer painfully doing Biathlon.
No actually, Chambo would be a kick ass biathlete. He is fast strong skier.. His Wife, Beth Ann is a National Class Biathlete and he still has many good years of skiing in him.
As has been demonstrated a Biathlete can do well in a ski race, but a Skier would have a hard time excelling in a Biathlon Competition.
Hopefully he will take the plunge.
