  • Staying Connected: New England Habitat

On Monday, we hosted a great meeting with Jens Hilke and Chip Knight, who through their offices (Jens works at Fish and Wildlife) work on a project called “Staying Connected”. The project centers on habitat connectivity and six large blocks of habitat in northern New England. We had several Craftsbury and Albany landowners in attendance, plus Ross Morgan, a forester who manages several thousand acres worth of land in the area.

One of Chip’s focus corridors is called “Worcesters to Kingdom”, which runs from the Green Mountains to the New Hampshire border. This is an essential habitat block for connecting wildlife populations in the Green Mountains with those in the northern Whites. Why is this important? There are many reasons, but two important ones are ensuring that genetic information is exchanged between populations to keep them more diverse and viable, and so that populations have access to routes for migration and movement as they deal with the effects of climate change. Craftsbury falls in the middle of the Worcesters to Kingdom block – the east side of town (our side) has a lot of farmland, which fragments habitat somewhat. Still, Jens believes that our area is important for wildlife moving across the landscape.

To me, the idea of their project is really cool. We just got a grant of GIS software so we can use some of their data layers to make maps of this area, something I’m pretty excited about. And I’m also looking forward to the opportunity to do some citizen science and maybe a little bit of fieldwork!

But there are other ways that the program can help our community, on a broader level, figure out what its priorities and values are in regards to the natural landscape. One obvious one is conservation of important habitat areas, working with a group like the Vermont Land Trust or the startup Northern Rivers Land Trust. Another is to work with a program such as WHIP (the Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program) to make our habitat more suitable for wildlife (for instance, patch cutting to create new browse for animals). Jens offered to help us bring in some new speakers for the walks and talks that we have been hosting in conjunction with the Hosmer Ponds Initiative – Staying Connected partners with an amazing number of organizations, so basically any group we can think of would probably send someone to talk with us. It is important to extend our educational programs to people who aren’t already involved.

Finally, Chip is a three-time Olympian for alpine skiing. It was awesome and inspiring to see that after a long career of being a world-class athlete, he now has a very cool job doing environmental work!

    Saving Skiing

What is going to happen to skiing? Winters are warming, snowfalls are less consistent, and sprawl is eating up open land. I’ve been working on a project to fight back. A small group of us have formed an organization with the catchy name of The Central New England Nordic Council. Our mission is to buy the Windblown Ski Area now that its longtime owners have put it up for sale. Not only do we want to preserve its 40 kilometers of trails, but we want to improve it by putting in snowmaking and a 5K, John Morton-designed racing trail. With its location close to Boston and the site’s 1400 foot altitude we could provide guaranteed skiing to millions of people from Thanksgiving till spring.

Want to help? We need every person and every penny we can get to buy the place before some developer turns it into a cul-de-sac of McMansions. Go to www.nordicnow.org and make a pledge to help us out. We need even very small pledges to demonstrate the breadth of our community support. Some people with deep pockets are willing to help, but only if they see that you care too.

There are hundreds of skiers heading to West Yellowstone in the next week, but no way to coordinate rides.  If you’re looking for a ride or have an extra seat to or from West, feel free to use the comments section on this post to organize.  Save some money, save the environment, make some new friends.

  • Ski season… coming right up!

I’m back in Park City, getting used to the altitude before we head to West Yellowstone this Friday… for the first races of the season!!! I’m feeling good, and getting really excited to start skiing on snow and racing!
It snowed here the other day, but not really enough to ski on… just enough to make the rollerskiing dangerous. Morgan Smyth and had a Over Distance (OD) workout on Sunday, and neither of us wanted to end up in the hospital trying to rollerski on ice. So we put on our hiking shoes, grabbed some ski poles, and headed up the mountain across the street for a nice long mountain hike! It was a BEAUTIFUL day, and we had a great 4 hour mountain hiking workout!

  • 4 Days ‘Til Winter

We’re four days out from West Yellowstone- it’s about time.  And for the first time in a few years, it sounds like there is plenty of snow waiting for us.  I’ve been watching their webcam for the last week or so- yea, maybe a little weird but if you can’t be present for the first snow fall of the season, keeping it in a constant state of refresh online is probably the next best thing.

This will be my first time back to West in a few years- I had to cancel a flight out there junior year at Middlebury because they didnt have snow.  We lucked out and got dumped on at Mont Ste. Anne that year.  Last year I didn’t even try buying a ticket- the races went off out there albeit on the plateau.  Again- we got lucky in the east at a little known, pretty obscure, and just straight up weird place called Salmon Hills in NY.

It feels good that the waiting game with winter is over for this year’s Thanksgiving camp.  I’m not packing rollerskis- and that always feels pretty dam good.  Four to go until we get snow underfoot and that nice reminder of why we’ve been logging so many hours on cold and rainy roads.  Racing Season is here!
