Sunny not to warm. Being up there with near perfect conditions really makes me question why I am not there all the time. br /Although I did not feel up to par all weekend I had some good training never the less. Saturday a time trial on my test course. After fixing my rollerski binding flex plate. Time was slower than I expected but felt a little under the weather. Sunday did easy running and shooting at Van Ho Biathlon Range I hired freelance Coaches Ripster and Will to help set up time and distract me. br /Monday’s training salvaged the weekend. I was able to utilize the complete loop at the new biathlon range in Lake Placid. My Daughter was the coach of the day.br / It is interesting to compare skiing hard on the treadmill to rollerskiing in vivo. Onthe treadmill the speed is set and you have to maintain that speed never miss a stride or pole plant if you do not recover from the misshap you will fly off the back there is no forgiveness. On the treadmill you cannot slow down you have to adapt to the pace. br /On the road you set the pace if you are skiing alone if you do no t pole hard then you go slow. Fitting It All In
Instead of sending Fish a monthly training log, I think pictures of my increasingly awful sportsbra tanline will be sufficient.
Captain of the pontoon…
Huge fish!!! Unfortunately just a huge rock…
Well, we’re in Hayward again. It’s absolutely nuts how quickly the summer is passing! It’s September already and we can technically consider it fall, yikes. Don’t get me wrong, fall is probably my favorite season, with all of the leaves changing colors and the temperature dropping a bit, but I don’t think I’m quite ready for it. I’m pretty sure I can count the number of typical “summer days” that we’ve had on one hand…maybe two…but of course none of those fell on a Monday, which is usually our only day off each week. Oh well, I can’t complain too much. The weather has been optimal for training, and though not every day is perfectly sunny in the 80’s, I still found a few days to have some relaxed, fun-in-the-sun.
One of those days that I found was during my last two week period at home. One of the perks of working at Silver Rapids Lodge (where I work the front desk and waitress) is that employees are able to rent watercrafts for free. KP and I took advantage of that one of the Mondays that we both had off while he was visiting in Ely, and took out one of SRL’s pontoons. We were only able to stay out on the water for a few hours (due to a storm that was coming in) but it was still a relaxing, and awesome time. We packed a lunch, some fishing rods, and sunscreen, and were all set to enjoy the afternoon.
Another highlight of my time at home was the “Get Your Nordic On” Nordic Walking Clinic that I held in Ely. I was really nervous no one was going to show up…but I actually had a few make the clinic. Though I am not an expert Nordic walker by any means, the clinic went especially well. It is awesome leaving a clinic that everyone enjoyed, and over half the people are asking you where to buy the Nordic walking poles so that they can continue the sport that you introduced to them.
Week in Whistler

I would have to say this was one of the most fun and successful camps that I have ever attended! It was a great group of people, five girls and five boys, and an awesome duo of coaches. Mother Ben Husaby and Chris Mallory. The week started out with adventures right away. The house we were living in was a house previously rented by Zach and Amy Caldwell in Squamish. They had moved out several months ago, but were still paying rent. So, basically the house was unlived in. We arrived in Squamish, ten at night, not really sure what house we were trying to find, and no key. We pulled the van into a dark driveway, concluding this must be the house and started looking for ways to break in. Finally we ended up giving the garage door an extra hard kick and lifting it up, finding a way into the house. The house was completely empty with one bed, one bathroom, no furniture and no cooking utensils for the twelve of us. We spent the next day at the dollar store and Walmart looking for stuff to eat off of and things to decorate the house with. That night consisted of drawing contests and a little artistic interior design with limited supplies. We found some random pieces of furniture and an old mattress in the garage providing some area to rest on between practices./pa onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SqQInobQU_I/AAAAAAAAAI0/UtjGbYijQ5w/s1600-h/6832_125548758345_94229733345_2343506_5374546_n.jpg”img src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SqQInobQU_I/AAAAAAAAAI0/UtjGbYijQ5w/s320/6832_125548758345_94229733345_2343506_5374546_n.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378433331946869746″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; ” //ap class=”MsoNormal” style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-weight: bold;”F/spanspan class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-weight: bold;”ollowing World class skier Kikkan Randall during sprint race./span/pa onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SqQIf6tOsoI/AAAAAAAAAIs/omvJTCDQdns/s1600-h/6832_125548743345_94229733345_2343503_7659737_n.jpg”img src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_l4L_01UOs1s/SqQIf6tOsoI/AAAAAAAAAIs/omvJTCDQdns/s320/6832_125548743345_94229733345_2343503_7659737_n.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378433199415145090″ style=”display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px; ” //ap class=”MsoNormal” style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-weight: bold; “Rollerski course at Olympic Venue/spanbr //pp class=”MsoNormal” The training was great. Most days we drove the 35 minutes to the Olympic venue in Callaghan Valley and joined up with the US Ski Team members and coaches along with some Sun Valley Olympic Development Team members for the workout of the day. It was really nice to get some technique advice from the coaches and also very motivating to jump in behind the US girls for the workouts. We got in four good intensity sessions over the course of the week, a race, a distance double pole workout, and some nice long easy distance skis. Most days we spent the afternoon doing various strength workouts, running, and some extreme soccer games around Squamish. Many times we found ourselves playing soccer as late as eight o’clock because everybody was too into the game to stop. We played east of the Mississippi skiers against west of the Mississippi skiers. Our games were constant sprinting across the field and at times got a little rough, but a good solid workout. We were smart enough to cook our dinner during the day so that we could come home long past dinnertime and quickly get the dinner of the day in the oven. Cooking was tough with limited supplies but always an adventure in and of itself. Often times dinner turned into a competition of which group of people could cook the best lasagna or who made the better mashed potatoes. We were constantly entertained but very productive during training. One night we invited the US coaches down to our homey little house for dinner and technique review for the week. We got a nice talk about the developmental pipeline and how every day counts towards our end goal from head US coach Pete Vordenburg. br //pp class=”MsoNormal”Erik and I came away from the camp confident in our training and even more motivated to start our fall training! Some days were tough, some were breakthroughs and others more relaxed, but all carried out the theme of being thrown “off balance” in order to be challenged to regain my poise and gain a better sense, or feel, for the change I needed to make or the new movement I needed to learn. And pretty much everyday was fun. I really enjoyed the different training environments ranging from rollerskiing on far-off roads in the countryside to world class biathlon shooting ranges and rollerski tracks. We’ve eaten the culinary delights of both central Sweden and Bavaria, in between good Italian pizza, and when we had a kitchen I took full advantage of the copious amount of forest blueberries. And gotten to know some local folks like Mats, a exercise scientist at the University in Ostersund who helped us with an interval session one day and getting to know some of our staff’s family over coffee in their living room./p/span/span/a/diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/SqQAKJ3RzpI/AAAAAAAAApI/pBN5sWcy_FY/s1600-h/P1020625.JPG”/adivdiv style=”text-align: center;”br //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/SqQAJowTxmI/AAAAAAAAApA/yd7Sfs1yyA4/s1600-h/IMG_0108.JPG”img style=”text-align: center;display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px; ” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/SqQAJowTxmI/AAAAAAAAApA/yd7Sfs1yyA4/s200/IMG_0108.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378424020546078306″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”br //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/SqQAIwzeGYI/AAAAAAAAAow/rEyj8fOyu9Y/s1600-h/IMG_0109.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/SqQAIwzeGYI/AAAAAAAAAow/rEyj8fOyu9Y/s200/IMG_0109.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378424005526952322″ //aspan class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-style: italic; “div style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size: small;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”color:#000099;”Taking “fika” (coffee time) in downtown Ostersund: L to R me, Per (coach), Lowell, Armin./span/span/div/spandivibr //i/divdivispan class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-style: normal; “Being the only lady, to which I was asked often how I was fairing, I’ve made it just fine because I’ve been in good company. Hello, Is there anybody in there?
The International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) has 10 trails around the world they call “IMBA Epics” – sort of like the Seven Wonders of the World for mountain bikers. Atop IMBA’s list is the most famous ride, so famous that Pink Floyd named a song after the trail, Comfortably Numb.

I’m in Whistler, BC at the moment, at a training camp with the national team, Sun Valley, Steinbock, NEG, and more. The training and conditions have been awesome all week. Check out TeamToday for pics and updates on the camp. The great weather we’ve had finally gave way to rain this morning.

Time to ride Comfortably Numb. It wouldn’t be an Epic without wet roots or an overcast view. Pete & I hit the trail early Saturday morning, heeding trailside warnings to “Leave with plenty of time to return before dark.” The 17 mile trail had over 1500 vertical feet of climbing–that’s about 25 round trip rides from Fish Hatchery to OO on the new Makwa Trail in Hayward. Success is measured on this challenging trail not by how fast you can ride it, but how long you can ride without unclipping from your pedals. My record was about 3 minutes. It was an awesome ride, despite the bone chilling rain. Kicking back in the condo this afternoon, I understand why they call the trail, Comfortably Numb.

Whistler from Isabel #2
Friday I arrived home from Whistler and the second half of the camp was amazing! On Monday we had a classic time trial. Most of the NEG kids did the distance time trial, but Sadie and Erik Bjornsen did the sprint. The distance race was 8km for girls and 10km for guys. We all did pretty well and I was last but I wasn’t too far behind. While the distance race was going on, the sprint prelims took place so the distance skiers got to watch the sprint heats after their race. It was awesome to see Sadie and Erik mixing it up with the USST people. In the afternoon we played a really fun game of soccer, East against West, the Mississippi River was the dividing line. We played at Quest University, which is a Canadian university about two miles out of Squamish up on a dirt road. It is the most beautiful university I have ever seen and it only has about three hundred kids because it is very new. We then did about forty minutes of a tough strength circuit.br / On Tuesday we took a hike. The mountain is called the Black Tusk because there used to be a glacier there and then a volcano erupted and the volcanic rock froze in a big blob on top of the mountain. It was an amazing hike and we had great views and some extreme climbing. At the top we had to walk along a rockslide, which totally scared me and then we got to the Black Tusk. To get the top of the Tusk, one has to climb up a vertical wall. I stayed at the bottom because I am too scared of heights and I knew I would not be able to make it to the top, but everyone else went up. This enabled me to get a lot of good pictures of them climbing. Once home, we bought a big pad of paper and markers and we all drew pictures to hang on the wall to make the house livelier. We also bought fake flowers to set the tone in the room!br / On Wednesday, we had to wake up early because we were double poling with the USST twenty-five minutes north of Whistler. It was a nice OD and we got tired arms. After the ski we went into Whistler and had lunch there at a burrito shop and it was delicious. Then, Jessie and Annie went bungee jumping! It was very cool to watch and I got good pictures of both of them. That afternoon, we played another unforgettable game of soccer in which the East eked out a ten to nine victory over the West!br / Thursday was the last day and in the morning we did level three skate intervals. It all went well, but David and Max fell. After the ski we took some group photos and we had to say good-bye to the Sun Valley NEG kids who are staying in Whistler for a few more days. In the afternoon, we made the drive to Seattle and dropped off the Bjornsens and Annie. Then the remaining six of us went to dinner and we went to see the Hangover before crashing in a hotel. Friday morning we flew out of Seattle. None of us wanted to leave the camp because we had had way too much fun! When there are twelve people sleeping on the floor of one house and sharing one bathroom, it is hard not to get to know each other. We had fabulous team chemistry, great coaches, awesome training, and an amazing time. Thank you to our coaches, Ben Husaby and Chris Mallory, for an amazing camp that none of us will ever forget!br /br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqLTniwn4MI/AAAAAAAAA60/PtCqPltGPXw/s1600-h/101_2650.JPG”img style=”display:block; Strength testing and Classic TT
Yesterday we did our general strength test. It is a simple test consisting of pull ups, bench press and leg press. Last spring we did some general strength work in our gym with the goal of reaching a strength level based on percentage of body weight. Everyone improved their strength and most reached their goals in our 7 week period. This summer, we have been doing quite a bit of specific strength and very little general strength. Our test was a good way to see what happens when you switch over to more specific training. br /We had some interesting results. On pull-ups, the group stayed pretty much the same (a couple of people went up, a couple went down). On bench, it seems that the stronger kids maintained their strength through specific strength and the weaker kids improved (maybe this is because they kept using their upper bodies all summer). The leg press results were about the same except for a couple of individuals who had worked on leg strength as one of their summer goals (these athletes saw solid gains). It was nice to see that we could keep our spring strength gains with good solid specific training. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqK58psR7jI/AAAAAAAAA5c/wNzuHqyQisQ/s1600-h/100_4423.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 320px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SqK58psR7jI/AAAAAAAAA5c/wNzuHqyQisQ/s320/100_4423.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5378065356668661298″ //abr /We had another beautiful day and a bunch of new PR’s for our classic time trial today. The older boys and all of the girls did the 10 km, while our two J2 boys did the 5 km. We have done this course for 6-8 years so it is fun to follow improvement and to see how the current group stacks up against the alums. Course records for our skiers are held by Andy Newell (26:00) and Sophie Caldwell (31:23). Both of these skiers did well at Jr Worlds the year they posted these times. North American Vasa – WeSki Event!

Skier Workshops Join us September 18 & 19 at Timber Ridge Resort for the annual WeSki Pre-Season Nordic Ski Clinic. Take part in the Vasa Ski Club Kick Off and meet and greet with two-time Olympian skier Lindsey Weier Dehlin. Two discussion panel sessions will also be offered on Saturday morning at Timber Ridge. During the Competitive Panel Discussion and the Recreational Panel Discussion, we will discuss technique, nutrition, equipment and what motivates different individuals to hit the trails. Another featured guest for the panel discussions is Cassidy Edwards who recently completed a star-studded career as a collegiate skier for Middlebury College.
In order for any ski wax product to perform at its potential, it simply must be applied properly. Come learn about good waxing habits from Wax Wizard Roger Putnam during the Waxing Clinic.
Dry land training will wrap up our workshop series. Dress for outdoor activity and bring your ski poles and a water bottle for a trek around the trails at Timber Ridge.
Roller Ski Training: On Saturday at 9:00 a.m., Mike Tarnow will be hosting a video reviewed roller ski clinic at the TC Civic Center that was very popular last year. Have your technique evaluated by a professional and elite skiers.
WeSki
WeSki is a community action-filled series of activities following the initial WeSki clinic in September. These special evenings will be scheduled at Timber Ridge when the snow is on the ground and the trails are groomed. The events will include:
Last Midwest Camp of the Summer

The CXC team is currently in Hayward, WI for our last Midwest camp of the summer. We got here yesterday and did some VO2max testing. Today we did some technique on the roller skis and took it easy in the afternoon. I’m really taking advantage of some easy days before next week when I have one of my hardest weeks of the summer. Here are some pics from the VO2max testing courtesy of Carl Nygren.
