  • Training Weekend

We had a good group today for the first day on our weekend mini camp. Most of the regulars plus some visitors from Utah, UNH, Middlebury, UVM and Dartmouth. We started with our jumps and ski striding workout on Stratton. The gondola started up just as we got to the top so we got to ride down in style.br /After some strength, lunch and a relaxing early afternoon, we did some skate drills, pick-ups, sprint starts and an easy cruise followed by a swim and cookout at Hapgood Pond.br /Here are a bunch of pictures. Most of them are small, just click on them to enlarge.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/Sn4QursHwBI/AAAAAAAAAi0/Q4jbxPf0fKI/s1600-h/100_3339.JPG”img style=”float:right; • Update from NorAm Champs Sprint Race

Jericho, VT – The first day of racing at the North American Biathlon Rollerski Championships provided plenty of head to head action and some great shooting by youngsters Addie Byrne (Bovey, MN) and Wynn Roberts (Battle Lake, MN). Sunshine and cooler temperatures provided both racers and spectators with perfect conditions and a little breeze provided just enough of a challenge on the range to test the athletes nerves.br /br /MWSC teammates Bill Bowler and Russell Currier started 2 minutes, 30 seconds apart, but in the end finished 2.4 seconds apart. Bowler bested Currier by the small margin with 4 penalties, 2 in each shooting stage to finish 3rd. Currier missed 2 in prone and his final shot in his standing stage to finish 4th. Walt Shepard hit 7 of 10 to finish 10th. Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, NY) hit 8 of 10 to win in a time of 24:44. The surprise of the day was Wynn Roberts who shot clean, 10 for 10 to place 2nd, 56 seconds back.br /br /Racing up in the Jr. Men’s field, Sam Humphries (Yarmouth) placed 5th in a time of 23:35 with 3 penalties. Eliot Neal (Wilson, WY) placed 6th with 5 penalties (23:49) and Raleigh Goessling (Esko, MN) placed 7th (23:57) also with 5 penalties. Ethan Dreissegacker (Craftsbury, VT) won with 4 penalties in a time of 22:00. Racing up in the Youth Men’s race the Yarmouth trio of Drew Grout, Tom Sullivan, and Chester Jacobs placed 9th, 10th, and 11th with 6, 7, and 4 penalties respectively.br /br /Tracy Barnes-Colliander (Ft. Kent) won today’s Women’s race with 3 penalties and a time of 22:15. Twin sister Lanny Barnes (Durango, CO) placed 2nd with 2 penalties, 14.6 seconds back. • First Post

span style=”font-size:85%;”span style=”font-family:arial;”Hi all,/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /I’m new to the group, and since I have to be out of state this summer (unfortunately), I thought I should post something so I’m not totally forgotten so soon after I met most of you…/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /Summer has been hectic…here’s a summary: I was married on May 23rd in Minneapolis, and then left for 10 days in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Less than a week after I returned to Minneapolis, I left for 10 days in Japan. I presented a paper at a circuit design conference, but figured as long as I’d be half way around the world, I really had to spend some time touring. Less than a week after I got back from Japan, I moved to Austin, TX for a few months to do another internship with IBM Research. I’m about ready to finish my PhD in CMOS circuit design at the U of MN, but it’s not a great time to be looking for jobs, so I’m kind of waiting out the worst part of the recession before finishing up. Therefore, coming back to Austin (for my 3rd stint here) provided me with a chance to get some more experience and earn a decent paycheck for awhile./span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /The summer in Austin is always a killer, but this summer has been one of their worst ever. The high temp has been over 100 almost every day since I arrived at the end of June. And, no, it’s NOT a dry heat. So although the temps “cool down” to a little under 80F in the early morning, the humidity is usually ~80%. There is no choice but to deal with this if you want to run or rollerski outdoors, so we just get used to it and accept that paces won’t be quite as fast./span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /Although some weekend traveling has interrupted my training schedule a couple times, here is a normal week for me now:/spanbr /br /span style=”font-family:arial;”M: 11-12 mile run, lift/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /Tu: 11-12 mile run with 30 min tempo (~5:30 pace), lift/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /W: 1:10-1:20 rollerski/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /Th: 10 mile run with speed work (track or fartlek), lift/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /F: 11-13 mile run, lift/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /Sa: 15+ mile run/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /Su: long-ish rollerski (hope to be getting this to 2.5+ hours soon)/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /Hope you are all enjoying the cool weather up north!/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /John/span span style=”font-family:arial;”br /br /ps. here are some pics from my travels:br /br //span /spandiv style=”text-align: center;font-family:arial;”span style=”font-size:85%;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BHb-Q9fL1qI/Sn2lpNtnxRI/AAAAAAAABvU/P5tKnKxK514/s1600-h/DSCN0217.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BHb-Q9fL1qI/Sn2lpNtnxRI/AAAAAAAABvU/P5tKnKxK514/s320/DSCN0217.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367628458369729810″ border=”0″ //a/spanspan style=”font-weight: bold;font-size:85%;” The new wife (Sarah) and I in Mexico./spanspan style=”font-size:85%;”br /br //span/divspan style=”font-size:85%;” /spandiv style=”text-align: center;font-family:arial;”span style=”font-size:85%;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BHb-Q9fL1qI/Sn2lo1gyzmI/AAAAAAAABvM/UXKOJQaUNOI/s1600-h/John_KaminarimonGate_SensojiTemple.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BHb-Q9fL1qI/Sn2lo1gyzmI/AAAAAAAABvM/UXKOJQaUNOI/s320/John_KaminarimonGate_SensojiTemple.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367628451873476194″ border=”0″ //a/spanspan style=”font-weight: bold;font-size:85%;” class=”gphoto-photocaption-caption” Sensōji Temple in Asakusa. • The Big O

I was probably a little too excited for this week’s orienteering meet. I was merely going to run around in the woods for a hour or two by myself. At the end, I would compare my time to a few other people. Not exactly a big deal. I really should not have been so nervous before the start.

  • AT/LT and general strength

The Appalachian Trail runs from Maine to Georgia. The Long Trail runs the length of Vermont. They join together in Southern VT and go over Stratton. Needless to say, we spend lots of hours on the trails. Most of our favorite OD combi workouts (roll and run) involve part of the AT/LT. It is great for coordination and the footing tends to be soft. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SnxoLpapZZI/AAAAAAAAAg0/1pxPciACPnk/s1600-h/100_3333.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SnxoLpapZZI/AAAAAAAAAg0/1pxPciACPnk/s400/100_3333.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5367279405224256914″ //abr /This summer we have been asked to help on a couple of projects on the trail. • Getting Ready for Ironwood

The Ironwood camp is rapidly approaching and I am excited to train with the team again but I also greatly enjoy training by myself.  In order to be a successful skier I think you need to like training alone in the forest or on a quiet stretch of road.  I think the hardest part is simply getting out the door and down the driveway.  I my case the following scene  greets me and makes it all the easier.

    DSCN1541

I also enjoy the simplicity of doing every thing at home. I leave most workouts directly from my house and even lift in the garage and yard.

  • 5 Grumpy Questions with Grumpy Zach Caldwell

pb1. You mentioned you’re fired up this year for xc skiing in the US,br/ particularly for Bird?  Why?/bbr/br/ I’m fired-up in general because I see reasons for optimism. We’ve gotbr/ some rising stars in US skiing right now – skiers with realisticbr/ expectations of consistent international success. It’s exciting. I’mbr/ not being all pollyanna-ish here – I can point to discouraging aspectsbr/ of the ski racing scene as well as anybody. But we’ve got some skibr/ racers coming along.br/br/ I’m fired-up with respect to Kris for a different reason. I feel thatbr/ we’ve seen a break-through that I can only describe by analogy. It’sbr/ as if we’ve been studying physics – doing equations, proofs, whateverbr/ it is that theoretical physicists do – and the grand unification theorybr/ has just come into focus. We’ve had glimpses, but we’ve been toilingbr/ away without the vision required to see the shape of success. I feelbr/ that I can see it, and more importantly, I feel that Kris can see it. Asbr/ a result he has the calm and patience of true confidence. His judgmentbr/ is sound. His vision is intact. He’s a fighter who has stopped fightingbr/ himself. That’s going to make him much more dangerous to whoever goesbr/ up against him.br/br/ It’s worth remembering that August has just started and that Kris hasbr/ looked great this time of year in training plenty of times. The same isbr/ true now – he looks great. It’s also worth remembering that there’sbr/ plenty of time for things to go bad before race season. But it’s notbr/ his current fitness that has me fired-up – it’s everything that he’sbr/ learned about himself and the sport, and everything he’s taught mebr/ along the way. It’s thrilling to feel it all come into focus and to bebr/ along for the ride./p
br/b2. What’s happening with BNS / Caldwell Sport?/bbr/br/pMy family has moved to Boulder. Watch for more announcements. Ourbr/ presence in Boulder is hardly the most exciting news coming from BNS.br/ We’re like a bunch of giddy school-kids here – we’re about to eat thebr/ canary. How many similes and metaphors do you want?/p
br/bbr/3. If you were bound to one kick one glide wax, which would they be?/b br/br/pWhat a stupid question. Can I get you on a technicality? What do you meanbr/ by “bound to”? Does that mean I can’t use any other waxes, or that Ibr/ have to pick waxes that are going to be strapped to my body? Startbr/ Universal Wide klister and FC10/LF3 mixed./p
br/bbr/ 4. Why are you “grumpy”?/bbr/br/pPick an answer:br/ 1- I’m not grumpy. I indulged myself with grumpiness for a while thisbr/ past season because of a variety of circumstances. I could complainbr/ about a lot of things but it wouldn’t help, so I’m done. Not grumpy.br/ Still, there are some people that should be careful if they see mebr/ coming. But they won’t.br/br/ 2 – I’m not grumpy and I never was. The name is a tribute to my unclebr/ John, who’s also not grumpy, but likes it when people think that he is.br/ JC has been the most important influence in my life as it relates tobr/ skiing – and therefor in my life as a whole. I wouldn’t pick the fightsbr/ that he has picked from time to time, but I would absolutely standbr/ shoulder to shoulder with him against anybody who would derogate hisbr/ contribution to the sport or the relevance of his perspective andbr/ experience. So I’m working on an affectation of grumpiness in order tobr/ ensure that there is an appropriate Caldwell presence in the sport forbr/ decades to come. He’s probably only got about another twenty years ofbr/ haranguing left in him!/p
br/b5. What from the ski world would you like to see go away and never return?/bbr/br/pI take a holistic view of the ski world – it’s not my place to say whatbr/ is wheat and what is chaff. Innovation has been great for the sport andbr/ I’m prepared to accept all of it. Like the pilot classic binding -br/ brilliant! All those moving parts! The sheer functionality! Love it!/p

There is no shortage of ‘Up’ around Girdwood, which makes it pretty sweet to base a training camp there.  A few shots from our hike on Thursday (day 3).

    Below treeline

There are few things as disorienting as walking on a uniform green slope while socked in and then having the clouds open up just below you.  You suddenly feel like you can lean off the slope to make the sucker spot your ‘horizon.’  Then gravity kicks in…

  • MOD Does Olympic Venue, Pt. 1

The past few days we have been up in Squamish, B.C. and in the Callaghan Valley, the site of the 2010 Olympic cross-country ski races. This week is our first MOD-exclusive training camp and so far it has been very successful. We’ve been lucky enough to be hosted by Chris Bishop and Kate Drew in their Squamish home which has provided us with great in-and-out access to training locales. The Callaghan Valley is accessed off of the road up to Whistler and it’s entrance road is 10km of beautiful uphill rolling pavement, perfect for our interval sessions like this morning’s. divbr //divdiv style=”text-align: center;”object width=”320″ height=”266″ class=”BLOG_video_class” id=”BLOG_video-7815c371da2fcf8b” classid=”clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0″param name=”movie” value=”http://www.blogger.com/img/videoplayer.swf?videoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvp.video.google.com%2Fvideodownload%3Fversion%3D0%26secureurl%3DqAAAAHfApvOOOB_WlESfHfM9b00_pqFypcvXj5Y5etvFqCkpQ-WpMgtNZrVM-iK1A1GIG2P162DnhgpPell3Io9DXS7hF8a-wDWLZdkqzuMjtZSPYyPogB6w8pRBTYtrE8Xh8os7nB1qUVpq9WpvbTCdqnVWoH1Q7_JJ5TSnPsbbXW1sNT2-GHWWTAUthsh0Kw6Aj-o-9hi9sI_y9hlr42pyBCvAqJZCKu9elhenAQ62eTXA%26sigh%3D5gRmmFGaDzPAulTMi_sfQh2nWgs%26begin%3D0%26len%3D86400000%26docid%3D0amp;nogvlm=1amp;thumbnailUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2FThumbnailServer2%3Fapp%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7815c371da2fcf8b%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw320%26sigh%3DZfI0Z4DJEPAT-JtkdQSITj4j1oYamp;messagesUrl=video.google.com%2FFlashUiStrings.xlb%3Fframe%3Dflashstrings%26hl%3Den”param name=”bgcolor” value=”#FFFFFF”embed width=”320″ height=”266″ src=”http://www.blogger.com/img/videoplayer.swf?videoUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvp.video.google.com%2Fvideodownload%3Fversion%3D0%26secureurl%3DqAAAAHfApvOOOB_WlESfHfM9b00_pqFypcvXj5Y5etvFqCkpQ-WpMgtNZrVM-iK1A1GIG2P162DnhgpPell3Io9DXS7hF8a-wDWLZdkqzuMjtZSPYyPogB6w8pRBTYtrE8Xh8os7nB1qUVpq9WpvbTCdqnVWoH1Q7_JJ5TSnPsbbXW1sNT2-GHWWTAUthsh0Kw6Aj-o-9hi9sI_y9hlr42pyBCvAqJZCKu9elhenAQ62eTXA%26sigh%3D5gRmmFGaDzPAulTMi_sfQh2nWgs%26begin%3D0%26len%3D86400000%26docid%3D0amp;nogvlm=1amp;thumbnailUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fvideo.google.com%2FThumbnailServer2%3Fapp%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7815c371da2fcf8b%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw320%26sigh%3DZfI0Z4DJEPAT-JtkdQSITj4j1oYamp;messagesUrl=video.google.com%2FFlashUiStrings.xlb%3Fframe%3Dflashstrings%26hl%3Den” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash”/embed/object/divdiv style=”text-align: center;”divbr //divdiv style=”text-align: left;”After this morning’s workout we took long afternoon naps and then went to Club Flex to pump some iron. Apparently Club Flex caters to the “still-living-in-the-80s” demographic of Squamish, as we were mixed in amongst aging and balding (and rather portly) dudes straining to lift weights they clearly were more comfortable with 20 years ago, all the while listening to some drab post-disco crap on the stereo. Regardless, we finished our workout and after a quick stop back at the house for snacks went up to the Smoke Bluffs in the center of town for some cragging. Squamish is home to some of the best granite climbing in the world and a few routes serve as a great recovery session before dinner. Up later this week: more intervals, a few more sessions on the paved 5K of Olympic courses, speed skating in the oval at Vancouver and more!/div/divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2910103639238326543-1391572302124681240?l=methowolympicdevelopment.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Mountains!

I am always talking about how sweet the mountains are here compared to the East and the athletes are always telling me to get over it but I think everyone could agree that the mountains were great for training in over the last week.
