  • Ride For Life Alaska

    Linda did the Ride for Life this past weekend.  Its a two-day ride from Anchorage to Seward with a campout at Summit Lake in the middle.  80 miles the first day, 40 the second.  Its a ride, not a race, and the organizers treat the riders right, with huge spreads at the aid stations and […]

  • Need for Speed

    I’m going to be up north on the Gunflint trail at the in-laws cabin all next week. I wanted to get in a good hard week of training this week because I don’t expect to get much in up North besides a little running, and hiking and canoeing with the kids. I decided to go out to Afton to hit the hills for some intervals. I was using the hill on Trading Post Rd., long but not too steep. When I got to the top there was a car full of teenage boys hanging out. After turning around to head back down, I saw that they were preparing to go down the hill on skateboards. I was going down leisurely, catching my breath, standing up to get a nice long recovery and they zoomed by. When I reached the bottom after them I just turned around and headed back up. When I turned at the top to head down again, I passed them as they prepared to head down again also. I was standing again and they caught me in the middle of the hill. There was a slight rise before it heads down again and I decided to follow them. I did a few quick skates over the rise and went into a tuck. One of the boys was half standing and doing some slalom back and forth. I had to squeek by him as he swerved toward me and didn’t see me coming. I passed him and started catching another boy who was just crouching low on the board. We all reached the bottom about the same time and I turned and headed back up again. As the boys passed me in their car on the way to the top, I got a double toot on the horn and a two-fingered, peace-sign wave. I thought it was pretty cool for a 42 yr old woman to get that kind of recognition from a group of young skate boarding boys. I guess we connected on understanding the need for speed; the rush of wind in your face as the ground zooms by under your feet. I just love that. Don’t we all?div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-8519594767011320175?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Soldier Hollow Training Camp

    I just returned from a 5 day training camp in Soldier Hollow, Utah with the Sun Valley Olympic Development Team. We took advantage of the great roller ski trails and used the terrain to work on skate V1 and classic stride technique… two things we do not have much of in Sun Valley.br /br /The first day, we worked on our hops with specific plyos: jumping over hurdles, jumping up multiple stairs, single leg hops, etc. We completed the workout with an hour run around the Soldier Hollow trails. I spent most of the afternoon resting and relaxing, trying to make-up for lost sleep the night before. Our afternoon workout was spent doing max strength at the Racquet Club in Park City…thank you Racquet Club! I think everyone is getting pretty strong!br /br /The next morning we woke up to do some 5×4 minute, level 4 intervals up Hermod’s Hill. If you are not familiar with the 2002 Olympic Cross-Country Venue, there is a long, tough hill called Hermod’s Hill. Even though it was a hard workout, I was pleased with the way I held my technique together and completed the workout as it was meant to be done. After watching my technique video and reviewing it with my coach, I went out that afternoon and skied Hermod’s a few more times to work on specific technique.br /br /Wednesday morning we woke up bright and early to hike Mt. Timpanogos. With 4,580 feet of elevation gain, it took us just under three hours to reach the summit. The trail brought us behind waterfalls, across snow fields, along steep ridges, near lakes, eye to eye with mountain goats, and glissades down snow. All in all it was an awesome hike! To top off the day we spent the afternoon at the water park!br /br /On Thursday morning we did a 13k pursuit time trial. A pursuit consists of racing the first half with the classic gear and then switching to skate gear for the second half. The classic portion of the race went well for me. I felt strong and was able to maintain a good pace. After switching to my skate gear for the second half, my legs cramped up and felt as heavy as bricks! Ug…a horrible feeling! The long over-distance hike the day before had done my legs in. I lost quite a bit of time on the skate portion and was disappointed to end the way I did after such a good start. I immediately iced my legs after the race in the 50 degree river! Brrr!br /br /Friday morning we went for a distance classic roller ski, focusing once again, on technique. I received some good feedback on things I was improving on and things I needed to keep working on. That afternoon we made our trek back to Sun Valley. After a long drive and some time spent gatering equipment that fell out off the roof rack onto the freeway, we finally made it home!br /br /All in all it was a great camp with some quality training!br /br /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/Sm3ot9lKBaI/AAAAAAAAAYw/sLEt-qTfKrE/s1600-h/timpanogos+hike+001.jpg”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/Sm3ot9lKBaI/AAAAAAAAAYw/sLEt-qTfKrE/s320/timpanogos+hike+001.jpg” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5363198607590294946″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”span style=”font-weight: bold;”Making our way up Mt. • Last 4 days in Never Never Land

    divI am into my last 4 days at the Snowfarm, and it has gone by way too fast.  We had some storms last week and are expecting more tonight through Thursday, but the snow has been amazing.  The team arrived a week ago and so training has taken a step up, not to mention the social aspect they bring.  We went down to the Cardrona Hotel on Saturday night and had a dinner off the rock and spent our off day on Sunday in Queenstown.  We geared up for a time trial today, a classic sprint for most of the team, but Morgan Arritola and I did a 10K classic.  Overall I think it went very well for everyone, as it is July and most of us have not done too much really hard workouts yet.  br //divdivbr //divdivbr //diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TghmVLEI/AAAAAAAAAJg/ayOQXEQXUr0/s1600-h/SKate+intervals+with+bird.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TghmVLEI/AAAAAAAAAJg/ayOQXEQXUr0/s320/SKate+intervals+with+bird.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362964180764011586″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”Intervals with Bird and Kristina Stranberg.  Just in case you are worried about how Bird’s training is going, he is just chilling in Level 1./diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TgIi2mhI/AAAAAAAAAJY/6_NiKaUnRMs/s1600-h/Trails.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TgIi2mhI/AAAAAAAAAJY/6_NiKaUnRMs/s320/Trails.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362964174038538770″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”View of the ski trails from the lodge./diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0Tf18HJBI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/ExQz-eBV6O0/s1600-h/MAtt+filming.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0Tf18HJBI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/ExQz-eBV6O0/s320/MAtt+filming.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362964169044206610″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”Whitcomb doing some video./diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TfV3firI/AAAAAAAAAJI/4oCcY0EJb3o/s1600-h/Marys+Trail+Sunset.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TfV3firI/AAAAAAAAAJI/4oCcY0EJb3o/s320/Marys+Trail+Sunset.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362964160434899634″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”Sunset off of Mary’s Trail!/diva onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TfJpIN-I/AAAAAAAAAJA/_N6TOml0C18/s1600-h/crew+skiing.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ObMdc4mpVIg/Sm0TfJpIN-I/AAAAAAAAAJA/_N6TOml0C18/s320/crew+skiing.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362964157153425378″ //adiv style=”text-align: center;”Not sure if you can pick out the skiers in the distance, but they are skiing in perfect tracks./divdiv style=”text-align: center;”br //divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8313858291794282393-3644660614509644175?l=lizhstephen.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Specific strength, skate pick-ups and cookout

    This is the end of a hard week for us. We had a good 2:15 specific strength workout this morning and then a skate ski with technique drills and pick-ups this afternoon. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SmuwB_DNHSI/AAAAAAAAAcs/5gic7wZbxC8/s1600-h/100_3205.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SmuwB_DNHSI/AAAAAAAAAcs/5gic7wZbxC8/s320/100_3205.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362573329465941282″ //abr /After 1:20 of double poling, the group does 3 by 11 minutes of single stick action up the hill.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SmuvQ1hrIoI/AAAAAAAAAck/cpXW5yImY84/s1600-h/100_3208.JPG”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 191px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SmuvQ1hrIoI/AAAAAAAAAck/cpXW5yImY84/s320/100_3208.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362572485095793282″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/Smuu0zeB5nI/AAAAAAAAAcc/VxXYA3mHpA0/s1600-h/100_3211.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 181px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/Smuu0zeB5nI/AAAAAAAAAcc/VxXYA3mHpA0/s320/100_3211.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5362572003507299954″ //abr /2 kilometers (and 11 minutes) of single sticking up Terrible Mountain and the boys hit a couple of steep pitches.   • Utah Day 8

    For the past 8 days Dan and I have been in Utah. Dan was working at the Outdoor Retailers Show in Salt Lake City and I have been training in Park City. Things are going well. I rollerskied twice with US Ski Team coaches Pat Casey and Pete Vordenberg but for the most part I was on my own. The running and skiing in and around Park City is awesome and its very easy to get in quality workouts. On Thursday I did my first 4 hour over distance of the summer.

    This trip hasn’t been all work and training though. Last Sunday night I went to the Tool concert in Salt Lake City. It rocked. On Friday night we watched Stig Fjeldheim in a ski jumping competition at the Utah Olympic Park and tonight we are headed up to Deer Valley to see Leeann Rimes perform with the Utah Symphony.
