Nice Weather
We’ve had some really phenomenal weather here recently. Rain for 3 or 4 days last week including a couple of good thunderstorms. But that was nothing compared to this afternoon. Today was one of those rain-and-hail-bouncing-off-the-pavement-and-the-sky-turns-dark-at-2pm sort of storms. Awesome.

U.S. Biathlon Women’s Team to Train in Ft. Kent
The Nation’s top female biathletes will come to Ft. Kent, Maine for their first summer training camp. From June 21 to July 4th, the women will utilize the landscape of the St. John Valley, the 10th Mtn. Center, and the facilities at the University of Maine-Ft. Kent. br /br /In 2005, the trials for the 2006 Olympic Team were held in Ft. Kent and although the team may not be selected here this time around, it’s guaranteed that the women’s team selected for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics will be here for two weeks. The women will train primarily up at the 10th Mtn. where the rollerski loop was extended last season making it the 3rd longest in the country and an ideal place to train. “We’re really excited to be in Ft. Kent and to utilize the facilities there”, stated Assistant Coach Patrick Coffey. “This will be a first time experience for me, but I’m looking forward to seeing the 10th Mtn. and surrounding landscape, I’ve heard many great things from the athletes.”br /br /Ties to the Maine Winter Sports Center – “This will be a bit of a homecoming for most of this team, since all but three women in this group have gone through the Maine Winter Sports Center Program”, stated MWSC Biathlon Coach Gary Colliander. “Many of the women still keep in contact with friends they made during their time here. They’re all really excited to come back and be here.”br /br /Also joining the camp will be some of Maine’s best female biathletes: BethAnn Chamberlain, Grace Boutot, Hilary McNamee, and Meagan Toussaint.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6813061107698506856-2131901265406053239?l=mwscbiathlon.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

May Training in the Rain Makes You Tough!
emContributed by Bill Bowler – /emHere in Fort Kent, dryland training for the upcoming 2010 season has begun, and along with it we’ve had a variety of interesting weather conditions. A few days ago, we had beautiful spring weather with 60 degree sunshine, but are now faced with rain and temperatures in the 40s for a few days. May is a difficult time of the year for just about any skier/biathlete. It’s all about making the transition back to structured training, which isn’t easy after a month off. It’s kind of like jump-starting a car, as a bit of extra effort is required to get your body going again. You may not feel great for the first few days, but the fitness gained during the previous season will gradually return. On a long run through the trails here at the Tenth Mountain Lodge yesterday, I am starting to feel strong again. Spring workouts are also a great way to build mental fortitude, especially when conditions are challenging. br /br /This year, I’m fortunate to be able to do a significant amount of my training here at the lodge in Fort Kent. It is truly a world-class facility, as it has a 30-point biathlon range, a newly paved 3.5 km rollerski loop, and fantastic running trails. br /br /May is also a great time to dial in your daily routine for the upcoming months, and to pay attention to small details that make a big difference in the long run. Some of these details include adequate sleep, proper nutrition/hydration, and equipment maintenance. The best way to recover from workouts is to drink constantly during training (at least once every ½ hour), and then take in liquid carbohydrates and protein immediately afterwards. Eating right and sleeping well are the best ways to absorb hard workouts. Training is a constant progression of fatiguing your body, and then building it back to a level higher than where you started. Enjoy it!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6813061107698506856-3339476303941942354?l=mwscbiathlon.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

Clearing the Backlog
Some grinding work has lingered in the shop a little longer than normal.br /br /A little bit of remodeling work got an early start when my finish carpenter had an opening in his schedule. Robert called and said, “Let’s start tomorrow!” So that was that, and I set aside a week to make a mess in the shop. The remodeling is really very minor – making some extra space in the service area for

Race Weekend !!!

This is the second time I have done this race. The last time I raced it was in 2005!! In 05’ I was just getting back in to training after returning home from college and taking a year off to student teach and coach in st1:state st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Virginia/st1:place/st1:state. In 05’ on the same course I ran 1:02:01 this year I ran 57:35 I’m pleased to see that I was able to run faster especially considering that racing 9 miles doubled my avg weekly mileage! st1:country-region st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Chad/st1:place/st1:country-region also was able to step it up in a big way over his 2005 result. In 05’ st1:country-region st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Chad/st1:place/st1:country-region ran the 4.5 mile course in 33:40 this year he ran the 9 mile course in 59:11. st1:country-region st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Chad/st1:place/st1:country-region is also running around 10-15 miles per week so I would say our 2supnd/sup, and 3suprd/sup place overall result was a good effort!!! My avg HR was 183 with a max of 192 and if I remember correctly st1:country-region st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Chad/st1:place/st1:country-region had an avg of 178 and a max of 191 !!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”Adam and Reed also stayed local and mixed it up jumping in the Pittsford Triathlon. Reed was 3suprd/sup in his age group and Adam was 4supth/sup. Looking at the ages Reed was a man amongst boys considering he is only 13 yrs old and competing in the 19 and under age group!?!?! MAN-CHILD !!!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”Amanda also was able to “Throw Down” at the state qualifier in the 3000 meters. She came in to the meet with a seed time of 10:38 and was able to rally and run 10:14 taking the win in Division I . Amanda has been dealing with some injuries so I know it was a big win for her!!! We will all be cheering for her this weekend as she travels to st1:city st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Syracuse/st1:place/st1:city to compete at the State Meet!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”Steve also was in action this weekend at the Keuka Lake Triathlon. He was able to take the win in his age group and finished 15supth/sup overall. Not to bad for the old guy!!!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”Marty tried to bring the wrath of R.N.R to New England but was un-able to locate the 5k in downtown st1:city st=”on”st1:place st=”on”Boston/st1:place/st1:city and missed the race. (They were Lucky)!!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”Overall it was a great weekend for R.N.R proving that we not only know how to ski but we are can run, swim, bike and even get lost!!!/p p class=”MsoNormal”o:p /o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal” align=”center” style=”text-align:center”Here is a picture of Steve on top of the podium!!!/pp class=”MsoNormal” align=”center” style=”text-align:center”img src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_qpcDeSX7uUU/Si5mRGcj-tI/AAAAAAAAAAk/t890bI8VStU/s320/steve.jpg” style=”cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5345322251709577938″ //pp class=”MsoNormal” align=”center” style=”text-align:center”br //pdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2153137138194667387-7978289923627069050?l=rochesternordicracing.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

John is headed to the mountains of Montana and MSU. Danny Kuzio is headed to Lewiston, Maine to be coached by a GMVS alum, Becky Woods, at Bates. Dylan Grald is going over the hill to Middlebury…go Panthers!!br /br /Part of our unique graduation here at GMVS includes an un-sensored Senior Speech. Each one made me incredibly proud, whether it was hilarious or deeply introspective. You guys all rock and I will miss seeing you all daily. Keep in touch!!br /br /—-br /br /So it was the first day of summer and we had five athletes out on the road this morning for the first of our summer training sessions. We did a two to three hour skate roll. Great weather and a fun new loop for a few of us!! If you are following this blog and want to join us for training get in touch with me (beck@gmvs.org) or Tim Weston (tweston@gmvs.org).br /br /We will be training all summer. Tim will also be coaching up in Jericho with that group. I will be helping Sabra Davison a little throughout the summer too–over the hill at Breadloaf.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1847564486460994594-8682467024863658794?l=gmvsxc.blogspot.com’//div

Mini Triathlon in Minneapolis
Last Week was one of the busiest of the spring/summer for the Tri-Loppet Group. We had a bit of a mini-triathlon within our daily activity. This wasn’t intentional but rather a necessity due to a lack of bus transportation. So we used our resources wisely and had a great time! The biggest accomplishment was getting everyone really tired but happy when the day was done.
Thanks to the great location of Anderson Elementary School and is close proximity to the Mid-Town Greenway we could walk there in less then ten minutes. The Mid-Town Greenway Coalition once again leant us bikes to use. We took the bikes West on the Greenway to Lake Calhoun where we used canoes provided by Wheel Fun Rentals. We had a number of volunteers who came out to help for the afternoon. With two kids, and one adult per canoe we headed out to Lake of the Isles. We made a loop around the perimiter of the lake, and headed back to get on our bikes. The weather was perfect and the wind calm, the highlight for me was making it off the lake without getting soaked with water. Two years ago, I ended up swimming to shore because of a tipped over canoe. We biked back to the bike rental in time for everyone to catch thier rides home.

In Search of Snow
Ever since last Spring’s epic crust cruise, I’ve wanted to go back to McKenzie pass and ski more of the lava flow. In particular, the North Side and Belknap Crater looked so wide open and fun. I almost went last weekend, but was turned off a bit by the warm temps. When Lars floated the idea of going out there yesterday afternoon I was immediately interested. When I woke up this morning to see an overnight low of 38 in Sisters and 34 up at Bachelor I was, as they say, all in.
We decided that since the road is currently open to bikes but not cars, we would make it a proper adventure and ride up to the snow with our skis on our backs.
