  • Being a Girl v. being a Boy Factor…

So my really, really great friends at the Snowfarm sent me a video that made me want to be a girl this week during our girl camp in Alaska, and a boy next week when they head to New Zealand for 3 weeks. God? Could you hook me up? Thanks for making me feel really loved you all, and not to mention making me long for a loop on the perfectly groomed tracks. WOW!
    Enjoy the video below!
    Thanks Guys!

  • WC Split Times: Biggest Gains

Continuing with my series of posts looking at some split time data (kindly provided by Jan at WorldOfXC.com), we turn to identifying some folks who tend to ski better (as measured by their % behind the leaders) towards the end of a race than the beginning.

I actually fit a model on this one (gasp!) rather than just exploring the data and making a graph. So after a little bit of fun with some linear mixed effects models, here are the 12 skiers with the strongest tendency to ski closer to the leaders as the race progresses:

Once again, you can click through for a slightly larger version, and the y axis is a highly adjusted measure based on percent back relative to that skier in that race. You can go back and check some of my previous posts using this data for a more detailed explanation of what I’m measuring on the y axis. The basic story is that it’s a relative measure for each skier. So the actual numbers don’t signify anything across athletes, just the overall trends.

You’ll notice that several folks here appear to be dramatically further behind the leaders early in mass start and pursuit races. This is in part a function of how these races play out. Early on, there will often be a very large pack of skiers. If someone, say Alex Harvey, is just sitting comfortably mid pack, at 1-2k into the race he might be as much as 5-10 seconds behind the “leaders” just because the pack is so large and moving so slowly. That can easily translate into a fairly large % back given the small amount of time that has passed.

Still, this model included a variable that accounted for the global differences in race type (interval vs mass vs pursuit) so these skiers are still exhibiting a stronger trend than other skiers, even accounting for the overall differences in race type.

Teichmann’s tendency to pick up the pace during a race is fairly well known (my benchmark here being that even I know about that one!). But maybe some of the other’s are a bit of a surprise to some folks…

  • Tour Of Southern VT (stage 1)

Today was the first day of our Tour Of Southern VT. The plan…hike/run 15-20 miles on the AT/LT from Mad Tom Notch to Little Rock Pond. We had an option to cut off a couple of miles early (which the young girls did) and to cut of 3 miles just before lunch (which a couple more people did). But..it all worked very nicely with everyone descending on Little Rock Pond within 1/2 hour of each other. There, we had a great swim and lunch and then an easy 2 mile hike out to our waiting vans.
The group gathers at the start.
14 miles done, 4.5 more before lunch, time for some liquid refreshment!

Anya, Paddy and Hamish have been having some leg problems so they roller skied 2 hours and then helped us carry food in to the pond.
Actually..the bag cooler is full of cold cuts for lunch.
After 18 miles of running through roots, rocks and mud, a dip in the pond was a welcome relief. Above, Gino launches in.

    Lunch line.

Funny thing how a 3.5 hour trail run can make you hungry.

    Heading out after lunch.
    Ahhhh…
A bunch of our Devo group joined us for the hike in to Little Rock Pond.
All smiles at the end of the day.
Gage hefts the chainsaw for a little strength work. There was a tree down on the road to Little Rock Pond which made our support vans take a 50 minute detour. Luckily John Ogden zipped back and cleared the tree so we had an easy return trip.

  • Quick Catch Up

On my way back to Park City from Sweden a month ago, (not sure how a month has already passed by, but it has) I stopped to visit Vermont for a few days. It was nice to have some time there in the summer, as I usually miss out completely on this time of year in Vermont. My parent’s garden was just getting into the swing of things, so we were pulling asparagus, lettuce and plenty of herbs for dinner each night, which is living the dream for me for sure. These pictures are extremely out of order, so prepare to get confused now!

My Cousin Josh and his beautiful wife Kate, who braved pregnancy and just gave birth yesterday to a 7 pound baby boy named Peter. So excited to meet him!!!

Alex Shaffer, Cory Wubbles and my Mom last week in Park City. My mom came out for a visit at the tail end of my big training week which was super awesome. We got to spend some really good time together and had a few BBQ’s with really good friends, like the ones above.
Matt enjoying the company of a really cute dog named Lulu, on a really beautiful evening in Park City.
My Mom and I met at the top of The Canyons Ski Resort after ski motored to the top of the gondola and I ran on the mid-mountain trail from town. We ate lunch at a fancy restaurant at the top and then enjoyed a free gondola ride down!
I received a surprise package from good friends last week which contained a bunch of delicious Vermont goodies and a tie dyed T-shirt that says “Peace, Love and Cows” on it. So, as you would guess, they pretty much nailed it in terms of what I’m in to!! Thanks Andrea and Theo!!!
I participated in a mud run with a bunch of the USSA staff the other week which benefitted gynecological cancer research. There were some serious costumes as you may be able to imagine, what with all the feminine products out there and a bunch of women let loose to support a cause. One of my favorite moments was when a male supporter of one of the teams ran by in a tampon necklace. You definitely don’t see that kind of commitment every day!
We were at the race to support a USSA staff member and her fight against Ovarian cancer, so this was one of the posters on our decorated van.
I did a rollerski clinic when I was home for a newly started group called the Lebanon Summer Ski Program. A lot of the kids were experiencing their first go round on the rollerskis, which is a challenging day for all, so Kudos for all of you who braved that first day! They were a really great group of athletes and they are all working together all summer to get a bit better for this year’s season. Training with a group of fun people is the fastest and definitely most fun way to improve, so find a club or a buddy and go for a run!
Our first two moose in Alaska. These guys blocked Grover into his apartment within 10 minutes of him arriving!
Every trip home I try to hit up the local creemie stand (which is what soft serve frozen yogurt is called in central to northern Vermont, and really no where else). Today’s flavor choice: blackberry with chocolate sprinkles. Yummmmmm.
My brother, Andy, recently got really into mountaineering and rock climbing. This is him at the top of either Mt. Baker or Mt. Hood, not positive which.
I believe this is a shot from the top of Mt. Baker, but it could be Mt. Hood too. It’s one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen, so I wanted to make sure you all got to see it too. I have seen some amazing places in my life, but it seems my brother is getting to see even more spectacular places and in unfamiliar times of day for most of us.
My brother continuing his badass streak. So proud….wow.

  • Hinterzarten and Oberstdorf!

So far we have been in Hinterzarten, Germany for the first leg of our trip. With some quality jumping sessions on the k95 there, it was easy to say we were having a good time! The first day there, a couple of us went on a ride around the town and surrounding towns near there! It wasn’t a very long ride, but for sure very pretty. The next day when everyone was feeling up too it, we stretched our legs a little more. With right out of the gate, we went up a very long and pretty step climb, that was then followed by a fast and pretty technical descent down the back side. The rest was short lived as we turned right to start our way back going up another very long and steep climb. Although we were going easy, it was hard not to push the pace when going up something at 15%. After that descent, we had a little bit of flat to the believed turn to head home. We saw the sign that showed “22km to Hinterzarten,” and we were all smiles. After about 10k of gradual uphill, the road sign said “6km at 17%” we couldn’t complain as that was our way home. Our team would go to the top and soon realized we either missed a turn or something, We got to the top and the road had ended. After talking to some hikers, and a cafe owner, we had two planed routes possible. One was to go back to where we came from, or  go up and over the mountain using what locals called a “Goat Path.” We eventually told them that it couldn’t be “impossible” and then set on our way to the goat path. The path wasn’t so bad at the beginning, but then the trail turned into a single track with no room for error. After about 45 minutes of HIKING with our bikes we finally made it too the road to return home. All in all, our adventure was great, but were ready to head to Oberstdorf.

Oberstdorf, was nice but also short lived. With only 1.5 days there, we had some quality jumping sessions and some very nice rides. Johnny Spillane, Todd Lodwick, Billy Demong, and myself, went on a fantastic ride. With the itch of the Tour de France looming, we hopped out of the vans with our bikes and road from Freidrickshaffen to Oberstdorf, Germany. Crossing the border of Austria and Germany several times, we had climbed several passes that were a gradient of 17% kilometers on end.

We are now in France with roads to ride, tune back in soon as myself and the nordic combined update on all the roads we have conquered.

Also I would like to thank, Honey stinger for hooking out team up with products for our long rides. Everyone should check out this company, as they are growing faster and faster with there all honey based products for range of activities.

Also, Cole sport, Colesport is a local bike shop in Park City, Utah. This summer, we have started racing for them, and they have hook our team up with bikes, gear, and good times. If you are ever in Park city, please go shop at Cole Sport.
