  • Okemo Stop #2 BUMPS Series 2011

This year the goal is to compete in at least 5 of the 9 BUMPS races. I’ve waned to do many of these races for a couple of years. this started after meeting and reading about the adventures of the Hill Junky. The first was good old 4867 (Whiteface) about 3500 ft of climbing in 8 miles. The second BUMP was Okemo. This climb is brutal.

Living Rochester NY makes attending most of these races a logistical nightmare. Luckily had a respite from work on Friday. Even luckier for the trip was accompanied by my 14 yo Daughter. After a 4hr bike tour with JH in the am got a mid afternoon start towards VT.
Upon arrival to a shrouded dusk. Previewed the course in a light drizzle unfortunately by car only. It was dark and raining, both of which may have been additive to making the access road more harrowing and foreboding. The road seemed steeper then the map on the website represented. The gearing on my bike did not seem adequate. A 39-28 was what on my bike. Andy @ ParkAveBike is changing it to a 39-36 for the upcoming assault up Mt Washington.
Actually, I was scared and bummed out that I did not have easier gearing for the upcoming assault. On a Positive note my daughter had relented and agreed to do the race also even though she hadn’t even ridden a bike this year. Of note her steed was a 20 yo Specialized Stumpjumper with mismatched pedals.
The next morning it was game on even my daughter stowed her phone away prior to the race. It was a good outing for both of us.
We both made it to the finish. A young Pro schooled everybody just missing the record.
The next morning I threepeated Whiteface to prepare for the next BUMP race.

  • Mad River Valley BKL Summer Camp

Last week we had our first local BKL Summer Camp.  Goals for camp were to have fun, adventure, and get some exposure to specific ski training.  We had great weather, and even got to see a Moose!

     Smiles and laughter.

     Oh yeah and mud.

     Look how cool it is…

  • 5km PR!

It has been a whirlwind last two months. Moving, buying a fixer upper house, and getting married has proven to be a bit of a distraction on my otherwise consistant and solid training. The wedding celebration is now complete and we now have a fully functioning house.

The shower was our last major repair. It is hard to realize the importance of a shower, until you don’t have one. Thanks to Kevin, Evan and Matt I was able to use their knowledge to get everything leak free and looking good.

  • Much Respect

Still looking up at that mountain, chopping it down with the side of my hand. Big congrats are in order for both the In The Arena roster athletes and ITA Team New Hampshire for the performances over the week at the toughest World Championship Trials in the World, the USA Track & Field National Championships on historic Hayward Field. I look forward to watching Mr. Hazle and Ziola in Daegu. If not in person, then at least on the flat screen. Much respect.

  • Running all over New Zealand

Hi Everyone!  For those of you who don’t know, I’m in New Zealand right now, and I’ll be here for almost two months.  Nils and I arrived about a week ago, and then spent several days visiting his family–first in Christchurch, where we got to see firsthand some pretty dramatic earthquake damage.  We went for some runs around different parts of the city, and would finish covered in weird silty mud that had basically just bubbled up all over the streets from the quake–liquefaction is what they call it.

Then we headed south to visit Nils’ grandma, who basically force-fed us porridge, toast, tea, meat pies, and all sort of other great kiwi favorites.  On the way down there we stopped and I did some intervals up a rainforest mountain.

Next we headed south west to Lake Hawea, which will be our home base for the rest of our time here.  On the way, we stopped for some cheap, greasy, delicious fish and chips, and then went for a trail run along lake Tekapo, which is the color of a chlorinated swimming pool–due apparently to lots of suspended glacial silt in the water.  It was beautiful and I didn’t even notice the fish and chips in my tummy!  A little after that, we stopped at a salmon farm and bought a fresh filleted salmon–it made a deeeelicious dinner when we got to Hawea!

    Running along lake Tekapo

    Running along lake Tekapo

The next day we woke up to rainy and yucky low clouds, but decided to stick to the plan and go for a hike anyway.  After driving 15 minutes down the road along the lake to the trailhead, it was suddenly sunny! And sooo beautiful, and I’d forgotten my camera.  But basically, the hike went up a mountain that is right between Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka, and it is super steep, and the first part is through cow and deer and sheep pasture, and then the trail just switchbacks up and up and up the impossibly steep grassy face, and the water is right below, and there are crazy scraggly rocky ridges above.  And then we went into a cloud, and couldn’t  see anything from the ridgeline…except a crazy cloud bow thing, and occasionally some huge mountains through holes in the clouds.  I felt very dumb not to have a camera, but we’ll have to hike it again anyway, when there aren’t any clouds.

So those have been most of my adventures so far, and hopefully soon I’ll have more better pictures!  Also, there still isn’t really any snow here to speak of, which is really abnormal for this time of the year, so hopefully we’ll get some snow soon too!  But for now, at least here are lots of awesome places to run and hike!

  • Eagle Glacier in photos

Our team recently finished an on-snow camp at the Thomas Training Center on Eagle Glacier outside of Girdwood, AK.  Here are a couple of pictures and a quick review of the week:
    Lift off in the helicopter….
Keith Essex of Alpine Air is one of the best pilots around. He gets us to the glacier quickly but more importantly, SAFELY. I highly recommend Alpine for anyone visiting AK who is looking for a cool sight-seeing opportunity…..
     Lifting up above the clouds…..
     Home sweet home
     Touch down on Eagle
Unloading and waving goodbye to Keith
Erik’s excited to be on the glacier for the first trip of the summer!
Technique advice from an “AK style onesie”
APU Girls: Holly, Fitz, Tax, Sadie, GA, Wrecka
Most of the pictures are the glorious days but the majority of our sessions looked exactly like THIS. Glamorous huh?
Then these are the days we live for…. and enjoy even more
Becca and Fitz putting in their time
    Skiing into a glacier cloud
    Me 🙂
Casey Fagerquist – our ski tech/glacier manager/all around good guy
    Our ever-enthusiastic leader, Erik Flora
Our old teammate and new glacier assistant, Mikey Matteson!
    The staff 🙂
    Me putting in the Ks!
One of the beautiful snow features on the glacier….. a really big hole you DON’T want to ski into.
OMG. Is that a FOOT massage?
Planks and core work up on the glacier
A shameless plug for Swix – the best wax/ski pole brand!
    Fitz squatting it up!
    Reese!
One of our new teammates, Erik Bjornsen
Alpine flowers found at the beginning of the hike down
    Slightly picturesque
Literally sliding back into reality and life off the glacier.
    Until next time!
    Thanks for reading,
    Holly 🙂
