  • Holmen Cow!

The Oslo Worlds organizers just put up a fascinating page about the 30 and 50km tracks at Holmenkolllen – “the world’s hardest ski course.” The women’s course – can we call it Marit’s Regret?- is actually 31.6km in length and includes 1,193 of climbing – 61m more than the previous record, at Torino. (The Vancouver 30 included a mere 1,056 meters of climbing.) Even more impressively, the “50km”

There is still time to get your race skis prepped for the American Birkie or  Masters World Cup.    Fast skis can cut a few percent from your race time, which can mean finishing minutes earlier.
Prepare all of your skis to run their best with a fresh grind and hotbox service. At Nordic Ultratune, a stone grinding batch starts every Thursday and those skis are ready for shipping on the following Monday — just 4 days later.
Return shipping is FedEx Express Saver, which is 3rd day delivery. So, skis that are shipped out on Monday will arrive back to you on Thursday.
Here’s the upcoming service schedule at Nordic Ultratune. Use these dates to make sure you get your skis ready before the Birkie or MWC2011.
    • Skis in by Feb 17th will ship out on Feb 21st and arrive to you by Feb 24th.
    • Skis in by Feb 24th will ship out on Feb 28th and arrive to you by March 3rd.
There is still  time to get a fast grind on your skis before these events!     But don’t delay… …fast boards are a joy to ski on, and they’re a real advantage.
Hey, if you’re driving to the Masters Championships at SilverStar Mtn from the south, you could stop at Nordic Ultratune on the way.   Ultratune is located in Winthrop, WA, about 4 hours south of the WMC location.
    New Skis?
Need new racing skis?    Nordic Ultratune still has a great selection of new race ready skate and classic skis.   Call or email for details.

  • Beitostølen FIS Race Recap: Men

A number of Americans and Canadians participated in some big FIS races in Beitostølen, Norway this past weekend. Not all the results have migrated over to the FIS site yet, so I’m just going to focus on the classic distance races from Saturday. We should keep in mind throughout that, from what I’ve read, many of the North Americans were not necessarily trying to put together top performances, but rather tuning up before Drammen next weekend.

One interesting tidbit I should note is that the combined men’s results from Saturday represent the single biggest ski race currently in my database, with well over 400 participants.

Let’s start with the roughest look using FIS points:

I’m including Andrew Musgrave, since he’s an interesting skier from a “non-standard” skiing nation. As always, the meaning of FIS points can be tough to tease out, since it requires that we believe that the penalty system is accurately measuring the strength of the field. But generally it will capture a general sense of “good race” or “bad race”.

By that measure, it certainly seems like Babikov and Elliott didn’t have a great day, although they’re more known for skating. Simi Hamilton put together another strong (for him) distance race for a guy more known for sprinting. There’s just too little data for me to say much about Skyler Davis and it appears that Musgrave and Valjas both had decent but not spectacular races.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of these guys, using percent back difference plots. These plots look at head-to-head matchups against all the people in this race that a skier has ever skied against:

Andrew Musgrave – Percent Back Difference Plot

There were a lot of people in this race and he’s raced in Norway a fair bit, so there are a lot of points for Musgrave. This makes his race look a bit better, perhaps. The red line tracks the median by season and Saturday’s race is is blue, with a red dot marking the median for just that race. This suggests that this was a somewhat stronger performance for him against these particular skiers.

There’s a lot less data for Simi Hamilton:

Simi Hamilton – Percent Back Difference Plot

Like I said, not a lot of previous matchups in Simi’s case, but what we see suggests a strong race, to be sure. At the other end of the spectrum we have Ivan Babikov:

Ivan Babikov – Percent Back Difference Plot

Of course, there’s the big caveat regarding how seriously Babikov was taking this race. But still, this is kind of interesting. First, his race, compared to just this season, isn’t necessarily all that bad. What looks bad is his trend over the past two season, which surprisingly includes his many strong races last season. Of course, this graph is only comparing him to those specific skiers he raced against on Saturday. But this trend is somewhat worrying to me. Hopefully he’ll prove me wrong at World Championships.

Update: After writing this, I read over at SkiTrax that Babikov fell, broke a pole and then skied for a bit with only one pole. So, um, that could be a factor too!

  • On the Road to the Pepsi Challenge

Here’s Frank on the way up to the Pepsi challenge.  You probably remember watching our awesome video from a couple weeks ago.  Anyway, in this picture, Frank is recovering from chowing down on a egg and sausage plastic gut bomb with extra grease that he procured from a nearby Holiday gas station.
I guess it’s partially my fault since I wanted to just sleep in and eat Mickey’s donuts for breakfast

  • I’ve been narrow-minded recently

I love living close to the Hillside/Chugach/Far North Bicentennial parks. It is one of the main reasons we live where we do. In the winter, when someone says they went skiing at Hiilside it usually means they did laps around the 15 kilometers of trail that is groomed for skate skiing. Sure, the groomed Hillside trails are nice, but I get sick of that loop pretty quickly.

Fortunately, there are at least another 30 kilometers of ski trails at Hillside that I never get sick of. The narrow single-track trails are perfect for old-school classic skiing. Blueberry Hollow, Speedway, Single Track Advocates, Middle Fork Loop, everything on the north side of Campbell Airstrip Road, the list goes on. I’ve been hitting these trails even more than normal recently. The narrow trails and tight turns are tremendous fun. I can ski for a couple of hours, and I feel more energized when I finish than I did when I started.

The proliferation of fat-tire bikes in the past few years means that these trails are almost always well-packed. Snow bikes make great groomers. The trails are even a little too-well packed for my taste, but its worth the trade-off of seeing so many different users (bikers, runners, showshoers, walkers, skiers, sledders) all sharing the same trails. I’ll refrain from a rant about the whole skier/biker/walker conflict non-sense that people in Anchorage just love to get fired up about (refrain for now, anyway. I can feel a rant coming on at some point…). Instead, I’ll just share a map of the loop that I did on Saturday. I started at Service High School and skied for an hour and 45 minutes entirely on narrow trails. Okay, okay the first part of the loop was on classic-only ski trails, but everything else was multi-use.

Wow, it seems as though quite a lot has happened since my last update at US National Championships! The biggest news is that I will get to become a student at University of Utah’s doctorate of Physical Therapy program, which is my top choice for grad school! I will begin the 3 year program in May and I am psyched!I realize an update is long-overdue, but Im going to touch on some of the highlights
