Three down, one to go!
The last race at 2011 US National Championships is tomorrow! The girls of South Paris (the small town were many of us are staying) are getting up at 5 in the morning to make a 9am qualifier race. I’m looking forward to putting up a post-nationals post up in the next couple of days but in the meantime, here are a few good shots:APU has a huge crew at Nationals: 25 athletes and 5 support staff (coaches & techs)Yesterday was Lars’ birthday but we celebrated today with a cake… nothing like a torch to light the candles! Happy Birthday Uncle Larry!More soon/goodnite!~Holly 🙂 -

Week In Review: Friday Jan 7th
This weekend will wrap up a busy 10 days of racing, both domestically and abroad. The Tour de Ski, more biathlon World Cups, US Nationals, some NorAms in Canada and some OPA Cup races this weekend as well. I try to stay on top of it as best I can, but I’m sometimes limited by the speed with which results are posted by FIS. In particular, domestic races often take as long as five days to appear there.
That’s all just to say that some posts on the domestic racing scene are coming, hopefully next week sometime. We’ll also have the completed Tour to chew over as well. But what’s happened here over the past week?
- A ton of racing, so a ton of race snapshots: Tour de Ski Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6, as well as today’s men’s sprint from the IBU World Cup.
- Race recaps from both the classic and freestyle Tour de Ski sprint races, showing how the various heats played out.
- I squeezed my mid-season review of the US biathlon squad in just before those World Cups started up again.
- The Tour de Ski stage events also give me the chance, on rest days, to make the sort of bump charts often seen for cycling races. Examples from the first rest day can be found here and here from the first rest day and here and here from today. Additionally, we can graph how different nations are doing compared to last year’s Tour.
- I took a moment to highlight the results of two Finnish skiers who’ve had some strong results of late, Krista Lahteenmaki and Matti Heikinen.

Bend, Oregon Day One
Awoke early for breakfast included at the Red Lion in Bend. Skied the course this morning. Everyone looks great and ready to race. After our am ski, we waxed then went to town for some big town shopping. Dinner tonight at the hotel. Here’s a pic from waxing. -

Rest Day
Three races in to the four race series, we’re taking a day off before tomorrow’s Skate Sprint, the final race of the championship. Congrats to Tad Elliott on CXC’s first National Championship of the season and to Jessie Diggins, number 1 qualifier for the 2011 US World Junior Championship team. It’s been an exciting week after warm temps and rain almost destroyed the entire race trail. The trail’s been getting better and better everyday as cold temps allow for lots of snow production. The course should be in pristine condition for the sprint. Stay tuned. . .
For now, here are some shots from the 30km skate yesterday.
Tad on his way to CXC’s first National Championship of the season. Nice work! He edged out Lars Flora by 0.1 seconds in an interval start 30km race. That’s about as close as it gets!
I ended the 30km with my second Top-10 finish of the week in as many attempts. That was my first marathon distance event in a long time and it felt great to pin it for over an hour. Looking forward to a blazing sprint tomorrow!

Sunset
As I mentioned in my earlier post from Roxbury, we’ve been hoping for a good sunset. Tonight, on our last night at Nationals, we got lucky. Here are the results of my very amateur attempts at photographing the beautiful colors. After a good ski this morning that included many laps of the sprint course, I’m feeling really excited about tomorrow’s race!

Race Snapshot: IBU WC 4 Men’s Sprint
Biathlon World Cup action started up again today (well, the individual races anyway; there were relays the last two days). The results look a bit topsy-turvy, with a fair number of big names having a tough day at the office. Looks like several of the North Americans had some issues in the range.

TdS 2010 vs 2011 Performance
Like last time a look at the performance of skiers from different nations in this year’s TdS and last year’s. As always, click through for full versions, as these are somewhat large:

Again, apologies if your favorite country isn’t shown. The Russian men actually seem to be doing about the same, with a handful of skiers doing well early (sprinters, mostly) only to drop out, leaving a few mid-pack skiers. The main difference for Norway is Northug being somewhat off his game; the rest of the Norwegian men are roughly where they were last year. The German team’s struggles are clear, although mostly that’s been manifested by them dropping out rather than continuing and skiing really slowly.
The addition of Kalla and Haag, Swedish women are having a much, much stronger Tour this year. The Russian women are almost a complete disaster, although I’m less familiar with their various skiers, so I’m not sure how to judge differences in who they decided to send to the Tour. If it weren’t for Krista Lahteenmaki, the Finnish women would also look like a complete disaster. It’s also interesting to compare Kowalczyk’s progress this year to last. With the obvious caveat that the stage formats weren’t exactly the same last year, she continued to pile on time relative to the median skier past Stage 4 last year. This year she’s basically flatlined.

Lappin’ it up!
Yesterday’s distance races here in Rumford were an 11-lap 30k for the guys, and a 7-lap 20k for us. I have to admit, after watching and cheering for the end of the boys race (you know, just the last 4 laps), I wasn’t feeling too pumped for my own 7 laps. But in the end, it really wasn’t so bad. Here are my top 7 reasons why 7-lap races are actually not too bad:
1. You know exactly what terrain is coming up ahead of you. It makes it easy to plan out where to push harder and where you can count on some recovery.
2. Lots of cheering! It was definitely a good spectator course, and its nice to look forward to being cheered by the same people in the same spots on each lap.
3. You get to ski with people who are laps ahead or behind of you. I was hoping to get lucky and start right as some of the early starters were lapping so that I could ski with them. I didn’t get quite that lucky, but after a few laps Morgan Smyth and Alexa Turzian caught up to me and I so I hopped on the train and skied with them until they made a sprint for the finish, which was fun and definitely helped me keep moving through the middle of the race.
4. After a lap or two, you figure out where the rocks are and can mostly avoid them. (Though the trail was actually remarkably good! The Rumford volunteers put together a solid loop, given the conditions.)
5. Its easy to get lots of feeds. Every time I went by Pepa, she was yelling and waving at me so vehemently to take a feed that I definitely took a record number of feeds per kilometer for any race I’ve done. I think took 5 feeds, and most of them were coke, which I don’t even like, but I have to admit they tasted sugary and delicious at the time!
6. Splits–its easy to get them lots of times when you do that many laps. Though I guess at some point it was probably really complicated for people taking splits, with so many people on different laps.
7. You get to check out lap times afterward, which is always interesting! Although the lap times were only posted with the preliminary results. But its fun to check out what happened out there–who went out too hard and died, who finished strong, etc.
Wow, it actually really wasn’t too hard to think of 7 reasons.
I had a good race yesterday, ending up 16th! I’m happy with that! On the whole I think that its been a bit of a frustrating nationals for most of our team. We’ve all been racing well earlier this year, and we set high goals for ourselves here, myself included, which we haven’t quite met. But I don’t think that any of those goals were set too high…sometimes the races that you really want to be your best just don’t end up that way. And there’s still more racing tomorrow!

Tour de Ski Rest Day 2 Recap
As expected, Stage 6 saw quite a bit of movement (as well as skiers abandoning due to illness):
A couple of the men are really quite a ways off the back; I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some of them pack it in. Stage 6 created a lot more “clumpiness” with the men, although the women have some groups formed as well.Kowalczyk has been losing ground on the main chase group since Stage 4 and is now in danger of yielding the overall lead if she doesn’t stem the tide. Cologna on the other hand looks to have this race more or less under control. Kershaw finally returned to planet Earth today and fell from second overall as he was swallowed up by the main chase group.
Here’s the breakdown by nation (with some countries omitted):

Comparisons to last year’s tour and some graphs highlighting specific skiers are coming in subsequent posts…Related posts:

SMS Skiers Make USST Trips
We had the 5/10 km skate for the Juniors on Thursday. The competition was tough and everyone was going for it. Paddy gets our “skier of the day” award as he skied himself onto the USST J1 trip with a great race.br /This race was the last of the 3 qualifiers for both the J1 Scando trip and the Jr World trip. Everyone counts their best 2 of 3 races and the top 6 boys and girls from the US in each age group are named. We had Skyler and Heather (and alum Izzy C) qualify for Jr World Championships and Paddy, Heather and Cambria qualify for the J1 trip. Wow!!!
