  • Axel Teichmann saw me pee

It’s true.  For real.  Like, 2 time world champ Axel Teichmann.  He caught me makin yellow snow.

Let me set it up for you in 4 parts that had to come together all at the right moment, like a perfect storm:

So as you should know by now, it gets dark here early in the day.  That means when we ski twice, we skin once in the light and once in the dark.  It’s actually kind of cool because it’s all lit up so it’s a new feeling to ski like that.  But that’s not the point.  Well today we went skating in the afternoon, and it was full on dark out.  And they just groomed and lit a 10k loop that was finally in great shape after a little more snow last night.  That’s part number 1.

So when we skied I did two loops of the 3.8k thats been open since we got here.  Roughly, I’d say I’ve skied this loop 50 times.  Not that I’m complaining about great skiing at this time of year, but it does get a little boring.  Then I was looking for adventure and I knew they had opened this loop and I hadn’t skied it yet.  So at the turnoff I just went for it.  And I was off.  There’s part 2.

Muonio is a pretty sweet place right now and there’s big races coming up and the world cup opens not far away.  Because of this a lot of national teams are hanging around, including, as of yesterday, the German team.  That’s number 3.

Part 4 is simple.  I drank a lot of water yesterday and today and had soup for lunch and didn’t pee before leaving the house to ski.

So when you put all that together, you have a beautiful, lit, 10k loop which I am skiing on because I’m bored of the 3.8k.  At the same time, you’ve got superstars like Axel (yeah, I’d say it’s first name basis after the intimate moment I shared with him) skiing around all over the place, like this exact 10k loop.  Finally, I needed to pee.  Badly.  So I’m cruising along, looking for a good stopping point.  So far, I’d skied about 2-3k and seen nobody, so I wasn’t worried about getting spotted.  I picked the top of a big hill and stopped, pulled over right under a streetlamp, and started doing my thang.  Well just as I started, I looked down the track that I was basically standing on, and there’s a person there.  Shoot.  Too late now.  Wouldn’t be my first time getting caught yellow handed.  Well as this guy comes up I get a better view and realize he’s a German, and he’s pretty good.  Doesn’t matter much, it’s still a guy who’s seeing me pee right?  Wrong.  I start to realize that he’s real tall and has this look of pain in his eyes like he just gets routinely outsprinted by Northug.  Actually, I couldn’t see that.  But I did recognize him.  As I was squinting at him I think I started to turn towards him (as I would later realize from my yellow trail) which seems, in retrospect, like a bad idea.  Woops.  But he definitely saw me.  Fully lit up, almost in his tracks, taking a pee.  And that was it.  My brush with fame, my 15 seconds, my moment in the spotlight.

I have had an awesome fall, I love UVM and I love the team. We are really good about being “teamy,’ as we go to out to eat, go to the movies, go bowling, go to hockey games together, and are very team oriented during workouts. Our strength coach (who is awesome by the way and follows us around to make sure we are doing everything correctly and not slacking anywhere) has started a Nordic cheer that the team has gotten really into, and even carried away with it sometimes…. strength is really cool because we wear uniforms and have really organized and beneficial routines. At Stratton I always liked core and thought it was one of my strengths- the first couple weeks of our core routine here I thought I was going to die… Van rides are really fun, we usually don’t drive very long because the coaches try to keep everything pretty close and that is obviously really nice, but we usually rock out to some pretty good songs that now almost everyone knows the words to and can almost all sing along to. I am very motivated by the team here, everyone is hard working and focused while they are also able to “have a really really really good time”. (hopefully cam can explain that one to you guys….) haha! miss you all and see you guys before you know it!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4680416899705879324-7340052668360326519?l=smsxc.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • USST Preview: Simi Hamilton Noah Hoffman

This is part two in a short series of season preview posts on USST athletes in which I’ll review each skier’s results to date and make some guesses about how they’ll fare in the upcoming season.  I don’t have any special insight into the future beyond my database of past race results, and I certainly am not using some fancy predictive model.  While I’ll likely support a fair bit of my guesses with data of some form, I obviously wouldn’t take any of my predictions to Vegas with you.  And of course, my guesses are just me being a cynical realist, not necessarily an expression of what I’d like to happen.

The two newest members of the USST are kind of tough for me to write prognosticating posts about.  They simply haven’t accumulated as much racing data for me to play with.  I’ll throw up some graphs anyway, but in the end I have even less to go on here than for Morgan Arritola and Liz Stephen.

Simi Hamilton sort of burst onto the scene last year with some impressive sprint results, including a win at US nationals and then winning the qualification round at U23s (he had a bit of a mishap with his pole in the elimination rounds and ended up 26th).  This led to his inclusion on the US Olympic team, where he managed to make it through the qualification round to finish 29th in Vancouver.

He did three other WC sprint races last season, qualifying (in 23rd) for the elimination rounds in one of them to finish 28rd.  That’s just not a lot of international level racing for me to compare to other sprinters.  Still, here’s a plot of his sprint results so far:

Hamilton’s focus on sprinting appears fairly recent to me.  He actually was doing plenty of distance event up until last season.  My guess is he’ll pretty much drop the distance events, but you never know.

Noah Hoffman, by contrast, is more of a distance skier.  Also, he’s quite young.  Here are his distance results so far:

Oddly similar to both Arritola and Stephen (although 50 FIS points means something a bit different for men and women) and of course Hoffman is a few years younger than them.  You’ll also notice that Hoffman had done even fewer major international events than Hamilton.  Hoffman’s had a few top 5 finishes at US Nationals and SuperTours over the past two seasons and he skied quite well in Europe last year at some OPA Cup races.

With so little to go on, data-wise, I’m loath to make predictions.  But just for fun, here’s some wild speculation:

    • Simi Hamilton will qualify fairly regularly in WC sprints, and will probably advance deep into the elimination rounds, but only once or twice.
    • Noah Hoffman will, I think, establish himself as the second best US male distance skier (behind Kris Freeman).  However, I think he’ll remain 1-2% behind Freeman for the most part.  (That’s actually quite good, considering how young he is.)
