It has been three years since I took on this ~110 miler with Colin Rodgers and I knew it would be a good one. We gathered a strong group of riders, which helped as we were able to take turns pulling. Johnny McGlenn, GMVS alum and Starksboro, VT local, was on his second consecutive day of 100+ miles of riding!! And he was the KOM to the top of each of the Gaps!!br /br /table align=”center” cellpadding=”0″ cellspacing=”0″ class=”tr-caption-container” style=”margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;”tbodytrtd style=”text-align: center;”

Injury

It suppose it is just a matter of time in an elite athlete’s career before they have some sort of big injury. Friday was my time. I was lucky, however, and in the realm of “serious” injuries, this one is not too bad. I was in Jericho, VT at our second women’s team camp and NorAm rollerski races. While getting out of prone position during an easy combo workout, I dislocated my left patella (knee cap). My coach was right there, and we were luckily able to get it right back into place. My coach then drove me to the ER in Burlington. The hospital took X-Ray’s and determined that there was no ligament damage, which was very good news. The doctor advised that I use a brace to immobilize my leg and keep it from dislocating again. After talking to the sports physiologists in Lake Placid, the agreed that was the best course of action until the swelling went down and they could examine me. I’m now back in Lake Placid, trying to rest and ice my leg so that tomorrow we can start figuring out where to go from here.
Creating a distraction on the range in my leg brace during practice. In good spirits despite it all!
Having never been injured before, it’s a tough situation to be in. I’m having to lay low, even though I feel good (minus my knee!), and it takes me twice as long to get anywhere. But, I’m confident that if I can just relax and stay positive, I’ll recover quickly and be back to training in no time. In the meantime, I’ll just have to enjoy my down time.

Every week after returning from the glacier APU has a recovery week where we get to do whatever type of non-specific training on our own, with no team training for the week. Erik likes to look at it as a mental and physical break throughout the periods of training. This week break is a good opportunity to either take a vacation or take advantage of getting in some good quality hours of work. After July glacier camp I opted to stay in Anchorage and work really hard for the week while enjoying doing other activities like swimming and rollerskiing with some UAA buddies. This August though, I decided to get the best of both worlds so I came home and did some work for my dad while getting in a little “vacationing” time as well. It was nice to spend some time with the family while soaking in a little heat and sun. Yesterday was record breaking for the most rain ever in Alaska…. so I think it is safe to say we don’t get a whole lot of summer in AK. I am headed back to AK tonight, as we start testing week tomorrow. Week In Review: Friday August 13th
Cue the creepy music, it’s Friday the 13th!
- We finally wrapped up the most improved/unimproved series from the 2009-2010 season, looking at the most unimproved female sprinters.
- We had another installment of Victims & Nemeses, this time focusing on Swedish stars Marcus Hellner and Charlotte Kalla.
- Next, we looked at age vs. FIS point plots for Italian skiers based upon their performance at World Junior’s.
- Finally, having exhausted the list of retiring cross-country skiers, we’ve moved on to biathletes, beginning with Germany’s Martina Beck.
I talked some friends into doing their first trail running race this weekend, so I’m looking forward to a nice 20 mile run in Montana’s Bridger mountains tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll all still be friends on Sunday…

Career Retrospective: Martina Beck
Biathletes retire too! I will be the first to admit that I know a lot less about biathlon than cross country, though, so these athlete profile posts for biathletes will be as much for my benefit as yours.
Martina Beck is (was) a very fast German biathlete. The International Biathlon Union has a nice article about her career and her decision to retire. Rumor has it she was an excellent shot, as well.
Since I’m much less of a biathlon expert, rather than pontificate on specific race results let’s just look at some data for her career…
I’m accustomed to skiers starting out quite slow and steadily improving. Beck appears to have been pretty uniformly fast for nearly her entire career.Using percent back has its advantages, obviously, but we still miss some interesting stuff. For instance, Beck’s two faster OWG races in 2006 were actually good enough for silver medals (individual and pursuit).
The 2002-2003 season stands out, at least from a data perspective. She just wasn’t very slow that year. Subsequently, things seemed to revert to “normal”: centered around 5% back with some much better and some quite a bit slower.
The other interesting thing to note is the tendency to have seasons with almost no results between 0% and 2.25% back or so. I wonder if this is a result shooting performance…
In any case, Beck has seen fewer top results over the past few seasons, and her slower races appear to be getting slower. Again, pretty typical for someone nearing the end of a career.
Since we don’t have technique differences to ponder (biathlon only employs skating) let’s look at potential differences between race format:
I’ve labelled these by race length, but biathlon race formats have been quite stable over the years. The 7.5km is a “sprint”, which just means it’s short and they only shoot twice. The 15km is the “individual” and is an interval start race. The 10km is a pursuit race, usually based on the results of a previous sprint race. And the 12.5km is a mass start race.I’d call that a slight preference for the longer mass start and individual races, particularly at her peak. If the rumors are true and Beck was indeed an excellent shot, this would make sense for her to be somewhat better in events that involved more shooting.
Let’s look at her shooting stats:
The solid lines are Beck and the dashed lines are an aggregate of the top ten female finishers for each season. The rumors appear to be true. Beck was indeed one of the better shots around. Two seasons in particular, 2002-2003 and 2007-2008 seem better than most of the rest. For her entire career, I have Beck shooting 90% prone, 87% standing and 88% overall. How good is that? Well, keep in mind that I only have data back to around 1991 or so, but here’s a table of shooting stats for women since then with at least 300 shots:Women’s career shooting stats for athletes with at least 300 shots.

I don’t have any big conclusions here. Like I said at the start, a lot of what I write about biathlon will be as much about me learning about the sport and it’s athletes as anything else. But if there’s some more sophisticated number crunching that you’d like to see for biathlon, let me know in the comments and I’ll try to oblige.

Post-WJC/U23 Development: Italy
Yet another in a continuing series. This time, Italy. First up is the original form of the graph where each panel contains athletes grouped by their best performance at WJCs or U23s (1-5, 6-10, etc.):
As before, the blue lines are trends for the entire population in each panel, the red lines are the trends only for the Italian skiers in each panel. The women’s 16-20 panel is omitted, as there is only one skier there with only ~3 seasons of results.
As we’ve seen before, the general trends lines can mask a lot of variation:
This time I’ve only plotted the points for the Italian skiers (red) but the blue trend lines remain the same. Fast skiers (1-5 panels) ski slowly sometimes. But this is still lumping multiple athletes together, so let’s look at the paths for each individual skier:This really drives home the level of variation between individual skiers, I hope.

Some like it hot!
pIt’s been hot. Really hot. Historically I’ve really suffered in the heat, but it hasn’t been much of a problem for me lately and I think I know the secret to beating the heat. Spend lots of time in it! We don’t use air conditioning at home or in the car and I wear a long sleeved shirt to work since there is air conditioning there. I also spend plenty of time outside in addition to the time I spend training. Last#160; weekend I spent a couple hours both days planting about 90 plants into a rain garden in the blistering heat. I sure sweated a lot, but wasn’t all that bothered otherwise. This morning I did some running intervals and felt great and ran plenty fast. I haven’t had any trouble sleeping on these sticky nights either. I think it’s not that different than, say, altitude training. The longer you spend at altitude, the more your body adjusts and the easier it is to handle. Going without air conditioning can take some getting used to, but not that long and it sure makes training in summer a lot easier. Not to mention the cost savings! /p pThe only negative side effect that I think is attributable to the heat is a little hyponatremia (low sodium) which gives me muscle cramps and minor heart arrhythmia. I had a more pronounced case of it last winter and realized that it must be because I don’t eat processed foods and so don’t get that much salt in my diet. I started adding a little salt and it cleared up. I’ve been noticing it a bit again so I must be sweating more than usual and losing more sodium. I’m now experimenting with some electrolyte tablets that you add to your water bottle to see if that helps. If it does, I think I’ll mix up my own with a little salt and salt-alternative for some added potassium as well (which is usually made from potassium bicarbonate and potassium bitartrate). I may also use some sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). We’ll see how it goes. If the heat subsides it may be a non-issue very soon anyway. Until then, bring it on!/p div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-3644790125246137937?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

Yes it is August 10th and yes I am updating my blog for the first time this season. Laziness is the mother of all inventions, as they say- but in the last four months I have not invented anything and I have not updated my blog once.
I am back training and stoked for another season of racing, so hang on to your Internet surfing hats, because the-nish.com is back.
The major news in my life is that I have joined the Alberta World Cup Academy for the upcoming season. New coaches, new teammates, new training locations and new challenges will make for an exciting year.
So far, so good would sum up my summer training do date. With no injuries, good volume, lots of strength and some great training sessions under my belt, I am feeling ready for the next hard block of training starting next week in Whistler.
