Topper does his best to help me hold the couch down

Topper does his best to help me hold the couch down

A week ago i had surgery to repair my broken thumb (from a rollerski crash in October). I was in surgery for over 2.5 hours and the doc cleaned it all up, got the cartilage back in the joint, lined it back up and put a pin in it. I spent all of last week either puking from the pain meds or enduring the agonizing pain in my thumb that felt like someone was sawing it off with a lemon-soaked butter knife.
But I am feeling better now, I am only taking IBproufen for the pain and my stomach can handle that! I’m also getting better at using my left hand (my right is now a club, wrapped from my hand to almost my elbow). I go in on the 19th to get the hand released from the club, and the pin taken out of my thumb. YAHOO!!!

  • More of La Feclaz in Pictures…

This will have to wait, I’m struggling to do a bulk upload to my SFTP server (I get a lot of “preparing to copy…” and then usually an ExpanDrive disconnect) and I refuse to do them all individually TTW. Maybe from Rogla.

  • Ready for Rogla [1]

We’re loading the vans for tomorrow’s 10 hour drive to Slovenia, and I’m bringing with me a healthy balance of acceptance, frustration, optimism and readiness after this weekends OPAs. FIS has results from at least Sunday’s race, and FasterSkier has an article, but I will go into a little more detail here than what you might get by reading those links – at least as far as my races are concerned.

  • The OPA Cup Report (via Sylvan E.)

pIt’s been awesome being over in France so far. The race environment is rich, the trails are solid, and my poop has never smelled like this. I blame it on the diet of cheese, bread, yogurt, wine, and did I mention cheese? Wow…br/br/Also living with an Olympic athlete, Simi Hamilton, has been a real treat. I’ve never been so pleased to hear such a caliber of an athlete yell in his sleep, “I love it when you call me big papa”br/br/We took a quick trip into Annecy before heading up to La Feclaz. Little did I know the bathrooms double as a shoe cleaner. Apparently the public bathrooms are sprayed down after each use. I didn’t know this and ended up with a half empty bladder and a wet pair of clogs./p

class=”MsoNormal”My stint back in Alaska was short.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanI wish I could say that I had time to properly recover from the races, catch up on much-needed sleep, and relax but that wasn’t the case at all.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp;nbsp; /spanWhile at home I had just enough time to coach a couple of sessions, give some presentations about my experience at the Olympics, conduct some pre-Tour of Anchorage wax clinics (good luck today everyone!) see my cat, and buy my next plane ticket.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanI didn’t have time to pay my bills (they are currently stuffed in my carry on waiting to be paid) fill out my training log (next on the agenda) or spend any quality time with my husband. span style=”font-family: Wingdings; style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp;nbsp;/span/divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”My departure yesterday wasn’t supposed to be quite as hectic as it turned out.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanIt begun with a HEAVY knock on the front door at 6:45am Saturday morning.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanMy body or my mind must have been anticipating it because I jumped out of bed and peered out the window to see who was at the door. Sure enough, they flashed their badges – it was USADA – United States Anti-Doping Association.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanI had been tested on three separate occasions at the Olympics but it was only a matter of time before they found me at home. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”For those that are unfamiliar with the process, as Olympic-level athletes (even when I was a “hopeful”) we have to fill out “where-about forms” that include information of where we are going to be EVERY DAY of the year.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanEach day, we have to provide a 60-minute “time window” and guarantee that we will be and STAY there so that anti-doping officials can show up unannounced and take blood and/or urine to ensure that we are “clean athletes.”span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanYou can imagine that this is a time intensive process, especially for people that travel a lot. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”Their arrival was bad news because I had a big agenda for the day and I had gotten up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanNonetheless, I invited them in and we exchanged pleasantries while I drank 4 pints of water in hopes of providing the necessary sample they were there to collect.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanBetween waiting to pee and all the paperwork, the process took two hours that I had not planned into my day. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”After they left, I had to hurry out the door to try and fit in my training before a 12-noon meeting. I no longer had time to drive to Hillside or Kincaid so I skied from my house on the Tour of Anchorage trail.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanThis usually isn’t a problem but Saturday also coincided with the start of the Iditarod and my ski home was largely interrupted by giving the dog teams right-of-way on the trail……. This was truly an “OIA” (Only in Alaska) problem to have. As frustrated as I was, I had to laugh at my situation. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”I ate a power bar for lunch during my meeting and hustled home to “re-pack” with only an hour and a half before we needed to leave the house.span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanPacking was stressful because my mind was clouded and it was difficult to anticipate what I would need for the next three-week trip. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”Rob hustled me to the airport and I checked in for my trip to Presque Isle, Maine. If anyone is wondering, I don’t think there is a place in the United States FURTHER away from Alaska. I am currently on my FOURTH flight of the two-day (no sleep) trip but will be arriving in time to help coach for the first race, the classic sprint, will be well worth the trip. /divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”Now I just have to hope that my luggage made the four-flight and multiple carriers jump to meet me in the “County.”span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”nbsp; /spanI packed my still-sweaty classic boots into my carry on just in case it didn’t arrive in time to test wax. If it comes down to it, I will test wax for them in my sweatpants, hoodie, and reading glasses span style=”font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Cambria; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: Cambria; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;”span style=”mso-char-type: symbol; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;”Jspan class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-family: Times;”This past month there has been a lot of cheering for me…… I am excited to reciprocate the efforts and share my experiences across the pond./span/span/span/divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”MsoNormal”Here is the view when you step out of the airplane in Presque Isle:nbsp;/divdiv class=”MsoNormal”br //divdiv class=”separator” style=”clear: both; text-align: center;”

  • Biathlon

Start the rumor mill.  Matt Liebsch and I were spotted at the MN Biathlon race in Elk River this morning.  What started as a dare during a ski last Thursday ended with a battle on the trail in Elk River.  Basically, Matt & I needed to get out for an interval set this weekend and we decided that shooting guns during our rest sounded like a lot more fun than shooting the breeze.

    Matt Liebsch and Evan Pengelly

    Matt Liebsch and Evan Pengelly

We recruited Evan Pengelly to be our chauffeur to the battle as neither of our vehicles are working right at the moment.  Mr. Minnesota Biathlon, Piotr Bednarski, had rifles for us to use and we even got to compete in the advanced race.  We both shot on the larger standing targets for prone and standing shooting.  2010 Minnesota State Ski Champion, Raleigh Goessling, skied strong and stuck right with Matt and I going into the first shooting.  Matt shot clean, while Raleigh and I each missed one and had a bit of a deficit to make up.  The same thing happened on the second shooting and Matt’s gap increased.

For the third and fourth stages, Raleigh shot clean and took the lead from Matt, while Matt missed all 10 standing (ouch!) and I shot two of my ten targets.  This brought Matt and me back together after getting dizzy skiing around the penalty loop.  In the end, Matt and I worked together to make up some solid ground on Raleigh, but not enough to get him before the line.  In the end, Raleigh held off Matt and I to take the win by a couple seconds, while I held off Matt to take second.  It was a solid battle with several different styles at play, but in the end, the true biathlete took the win.

There was an impressive turnout for the Novice race–110 competitors!  So many skiers showed up that they had to cap the field at 110 because there weren’t enough rifles for everyone.  Despite forecasts for rain, the sun came out and made for a beautiful day to be outside.  While I don’t think I have any future in biathlon, it was a fun way to get in a hard workout and work on my marksmanship.  Several Lakeville High School skiers, along with many other teams (including Hopkins!) came out to give it a shot as well.  Fun morning all the way around.
