  • 2010 Olympic Team

Just a few minutes ago the US Ski Team announced the 2010 Olympic Team. There will be 8 awesome athletes representing the US in Vancouver: Morgan Arritola, Liz Stephan, Kikkan Randall, Caitlin Compton, Andy Newell, Torin Koos, Kris Freeman and James Southam. I am so happy for everyone and I know they will race as hard and as fast as they can. Good luck!

  • Three in One

This past weekend I discovered what it felt like to do three jobs as one person! I was my own coach, my own wax tech, and a racer. I’m glad it’s not that way very often because let me tell you, it is stressful! Whoa!br /br /I went to the Methow Valley where I raced a sprint race on Saturday and a 10k on Sunday. The weather was not the most cooperative as it was warm, rainy, and slushy. The volunteers did a great jog of shoveling snow onto the sprint course, trying to preserve the snow. We lucked out with a surprisingly sunny day on Saturday, making the sprint course icy in the morning and softening up in the afternoon.br /br /Sunday however, was not so sunny. The race was moved to a venue 2000 feet higher, where the snow was more abundant. When I arrived at the venue, it was misting rain. My first reaction was “oh no, this is going to be really tricky waxing!” After talking to some people about waxes, I decided to race on my zeros. Zeros are skis that do not require wax, instead the kick zone is roughed up with sand paper to create kick and suction when the conditions are wet and warm. Surprisingly enough, they worked decently. There were a few slips here and there, but I did not want to risk going on skis with wax that could ice up or not kick. So off I went, on my zeros! I skied knowing that it was a tough day for everyone and the people who were going to ski well were going to be the ones who did not let negative thoughts get to their head. So that is the path I decided to take. I was happy to end up 3rd, especially with the tough conditions. In the Arena alumni athletes Caitlin Compton and Laura Valaas stood on the podium as well. On the men’s side, In the Arena athlete’s Torin Koos and Brian Gregg took 1st and 2nd. A good day for ITA athletes!br /br /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/S1ZsCq6fAsI/AAAAAAAAAis/eE0cvrxlVB4/s1600-h/winter+09.jpg”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/S1ZsCq6fAsI/AAAAAAAAAis/eE0cvrxlVB4/s320/winter+09.jpg” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5428645193976840898″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”ITA athlete’s Laura Valaas, Caitlin Compton, amp; Nicole De Yong dominate the podiumbr //span/divbr /I am currently back in Kethcum, where I am laying low as I am trying to get rid of a cold I acquired along the way. • 170 Additional Spots Given to US for Olympic Selection.

pPARK CITY, UT – In an unexpected turn of events, nearly every team ahead of the US on the quota selection declined to use any of their allotted spots for the Vancouver Games, allowing a glut of one hundred seventy (170) positions to be afforded to the US.  Spirits are high in Park City.   “We’re taking the athletes we feel have a chance at success.” Described John Farra in a telegraph sent to the JohnnyKlister.com offices early on Tuesday morning.  “95 men will attend the games, while 75 women will represent the US.”   “Holy Crap!” Explained Max Durstchi, who is sitting just inside the cutoff for men. (Durtschi is 89th on the most recent USSA list.)  “When I came down with consumption at the Nationals races this year in Anchorage, I never thought I had a chance.  Lucky for me Norway is folding for the games!”  Conversely, a disconsolate Corinne Prevot, currently racing for Middlebury College and sitting 78th on the points list is frustrated with how close she came to Olympic selection.  A tearful Prevot, who owns the colorful Ski-Da hat company described, “BUT DO THEY HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY HATS I COULD SELL THERE???!!”  Prevot’s plight isn’t the only downside of the quota reversal.  Unfortunate side effects of the Olympic quota shift include an major entire shut down of collegiate skiing, as well as bankruptcy declared by Bjorn Dahlie clothing, the official supplier to the USST.  “With each suit costing us over $700 to manufacture, the new influx of US athletes is more than we can keep up with.” Dahlie described on his Twitter site Tuesday at noon.  An increase in staff is required for the Olympic Games and positions are posted via the Utah Craig’s list.  “We have roughly 16 or 17 applicants for only 8 positions.” Described USST Head Coach Pete Vordenberg.  “We’re planning on having a racquetball tournament to determine viable candidates.”  Reactions to the tournament are mixed.  Dan Weiland at Ski Club Vail agreed claiming, “It really is the only fair way.”  Roger Knight of Boulder Nordic Sport dissented claiming. “This is wrong.  I’m out.”/p

The view from our hotel deck The view from our hotel deck

I just arrived in Antholz, Italy after a tough week of racing in Ruhpolding.  Racing did not go exactly as planned in Ruhpolding, but I am hoping to get back on track this week in Italy.

I knew going into Ruhpolding that I had my work cut out for me because Ruhpolding is by far my least favorite course on the World Cup.  The course is comprised of complete flats leading into steep uphills.  Basically, you have to jump skate the uphills and then recover for the next sprint.  I am not a great sprinter and I have always struggled in Ruhpolding.  In fact, before this year I had never scored a World Cup point in Ruhpolding.  Needless to say, I was a little disappointed with my individual results there, but I was pleased to walk away with some points in the bag.

The relay, however, was a really solid result for the team, but I wish I could have been more solid on the shooting range.  Lowell, Jay, and Jeremy had fantastic races but I was not able to back them up.  I was so tired heading into this race from the previous two weeks of racing that I simply did not have much in the tank.  If this had been a training day, I definitely would have taken a day off.  Unfortunately, we have a pretty small team, so when the relay rolls around its time to step up, whether your tired or not.  On the positive side, I think this result was really encouraging in that we were 6th place despite a weak leg from me.  It definitely makes me wonder where we will be when everyone pops a race.

I am really looking forward to the races here this week.  I have had some of my best races here in the past and this is definitely my favorite course on the World Cup.  Unlike in years past though, I will be training through these races in order to best prepare for the Games.  Because of this, I am a little unsure of what my form will be like, but from here on out, it’s all about the Olympics.

We are one of the first teams to arrive so it is pretty mellow, but things will heat up by this weekend!divThe race site is perched on a hill. There won’t be any parking up here so it will be interesting once everyone arrives. We will have to park below and walk or ski up 1/2 a km to the race site.
