  • Dusting the cobwebs

Today was the official start of my racing season!
This morning I woke up early, ate my oatmeal, and then pulled on the bright red racing suit… I was super excited to be racing again and I wanted to start off the season with an awesome race! My training has been going great, and I’m feeling strong and confident… why not go out and have a great one?
Thats the funny thing about racing. Sometimes you just have to dust out the cobwebs after you haven’t raced for a while (try since last Febuary). And thats exactly what happened today. I did some major dusting… I didn’t ski the race perfectly. But I am happy with my effort. Looking back at it now, I know where I could have skied better and what I will do differently next time. But whats done is done. Learn and move forward.

  • Getting it done.

Today was a solid start to the season.  It was a long sprint-only qualifier on an icy, fast course.  Thanks to Fish for some of the best classic skis I’ve ever skied on–fast glide and easy kick.  Woke up early this morning to a starry sky, which can only mean one thing in West: cold.  The snow set-up solid over night with temps below zero and we had ideal conditions for the race.  It was the first cross country race I’ve ever skied “blind.”  We weren’t allowed to preview the course before the race, sort of like an alpine event.  The icy fast corners took a lot of skiers by surprise and there were a number of casualties on the course.  Big points for everyone who stayed on their feet.  Great to be out racing again!  I’ll try to get up a better report later, but I’ve gotta roll. . .

Tips for building a single-pole skiing sled.

  • Blading the Flats

20 miles of rough ice to check out a new (for us) Nordic skating venue.

  • Cold Skiing, Warm Light

The skiing has gotten chilly, but the winter light has become warmer.

  • First Race, check.

The Yellowstone Ski Festival classic sprint happened this morning.  Unofficial results can be found HERE.  Everyone on the CXC Team Vertical Limit is very proud of our teammate, Garrott Kuzzy, for finishing first place today!

The course was rock solid and had several sketchy corners throwing lots of us, including myself, off the trail and into the woods.  Good work to those athletes that were able to stay on their feet.  Today was a success in that race #1 and crash #1 are now out of the way.  I am more fired up than ever for the 10K skate race on Friday.

  • First Race of the Season

Well, the first race of the season is now history! It wasn’t a typical race, instead it was only the qualifying round of a classic sprint. Usually we complete a qualifying round to determine who makes it to the quarterfinals and so on, but today was a 5 minute all-out sprint, start to finish! Because of the length of the race, there was not much room for error!br /br /I was one of the first girls out of the gate and intended to ski smooth and relaxed. I had a hard time finding that smoothness and felt like more of a spaz. The corners were tricky and I was lucky to make it around with out loosing my balance. Once I came to the final 100 meter incline, I felt like i was beginning to ski smooth and fast. I pushed it all the way to the finish line just to feel my lungs burn! Whew, the race was over!br /br /I ended up 13th overall, a relatively mediocre result. Despite today’s result, it was good to go through the motions of race preparation and racing itself! It always takes a few races at the beginning of the season for me to get moving. I am looking forward to Friday’s 10k skate…if anything, it will be good to get another race “under my belt.”br /br /
