I have a couple of complaints about our camp this weekend in Corvallis. 1. The OSU/Stanford game was at 4pm on Saturday which made it impossible to train twice and go to the game. I chose training. 2. I got a little poison ivy (or oak or sumak) on my legs. Beyond that it was fantastic. We had perfect weather, a sweet house and some really good training. I would have been happy to have camp continue on into this week.

Lake Placid
Well, we made it back from our last camp in Lake Placid, NY without any problems. We were able to do some pretty intense workouts on some serious hills which is always nice at this time of year. We did all of our intervals uphill and took advantage of the OTC’s recovery center almost everyday. […]

Lake Placid Wrap-Up
The Lake Placid Camp at the Olympic Training Center concluded Wednesday with the annual Climb to the Castle time trial. Anyone who has done it, knows how grueling and tough this race is! It is a five-mile climb up the Whiteface Mountain toll road and gains a total elevation of 3,500 feet. It is one thing to race up the road in the first place and it is another thing to race up the road in adverse weather conditions. Weather was not on our side on Wendesday and racers toughed out the rain, wind, fog and sleet!br /br /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/StNHwVT9DbI/AAAAAAAAAdo/c4b05eJr1OU/s1600-h/2+7+Morgan+Arritola+1.jpg”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 191px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bfd1dFDmRWA/StNHwVT9DbI/AAAAAAAAAdo/c4b05eJr1OU/s320/2+7+Morgan+Arritola+1.jpg” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391732074572746162″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”The lead woman’s pack, charging up the mountain through the fog!br /br //span/divWednesday was definitely a mental race! I went into the race excited and ready to put the hurt on. The first two miles of the race started at a comfortable pace with a long train of girls. The pace gradually picked up as the race progressed, slowly breaking up the pack. I positioned myself in the middle of the pack and made an effort to close the gap when girls dropped off. By the third mile, the train broke up and I was with the front pack of five girls. The weather began to change and the fog, wind and rain began to settle in…the tough part of the race was on! I tried to stick with the pack but they slowly pulled away from me. Before I knew it, I was all by myself. Once you get dropped from the pack, it is very difficult to catch up by yourself. I kept my head down and worked as hard as I could against the wind. At one point, the wind was so strong that I was hardly moving! I anticipated the pack of girls behind me to catch me, but I was pleasantly surprised when I crossed the finish line by myself, one minute ahead of anyone else. I finished 6th over-all, two minutes behind the top female. This was a good and encouraging result for me, but I still have a two-minute gap to work on.br /br /I am currently spending the week in Vermont with my boyfriend, and enjoying some rest and recovery after such an intese camp. Strength testing and Mtn run
On Friday we continued our testing week with our general strength test. Over the last month we have done a good amount of specific strength and speed, but no general strength. It was good to see that we have done enough specific strength to maintain the general strength gains that we made this spring. Our plan has been to build up our general strength in the spring and then to move to specific strength. We have been testing every 5-6 weeks. If we feel that we are losing our basic general strength, we will start adding a little back into our schedule, but so far we’ve been fine with all of our roller skiing.br /We joined about 100 others for the North Face Mountain Challenge this morning. We were there to run the mountain AND to raise money for a local girl, Bridgette Eichhorn, who is getting a kidney transplant. Good news all around as most of our crew had PR’s and nearly $17,000 was raised for Bridgette’s medical expenses.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQuysOtUI/AAAAAAAABQw/9sTrbTYxvZQ/s1600-h/gondola.jpg”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQuysOtUI/AAAAAAAABQw/9sTrbTYxvZQ/s400/gondola.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391460468727395650″ //abr /The day was brisk and cool at the bottom of the mtn., we ran into a cloud on top.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQYPjYEtI/AAAAAAAABQo/CrRB38DycKw/s1600-h/skyler.jpg”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQYPjYEtI/AAAAAAAABQo/CrRB38DycKw/s400/skyler.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391460081337897682″ //aThanks to Herve P for the pictures.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQEiCKW6I/AAAAAAAABQg/S3JwHROq-as/s1600-h/matt2.jpg”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJQEiCKW6I/AAAAAAAABQg/S3JwHROq-as/s400/matt2.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391459742701476770″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJP1EQ_daI/AAAAAAAABQY/BMSqjPSD50w/s1600-h/mac.jpg”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJP1EQ_daI/AAAAAAAABQY/BMSqjPSD50w/s400/mac.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391459477012575650″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPfJFBc_I/AAAAAAAABQQ/omprqNpHg2Y/s1600-h/jac.jpg”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPfJFBc_I/AAAAAAAABQQ/omprqNpHg2Y/s400/jac.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391459100347429874″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPPQ0JQlI/AAAAAAAABQI/li26kSpaiE4/s1600-h/issyrachel.jpg”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPPQ0JQlI/AAAAAAAABQI/li26kSpaiE4/s400/issyrachel.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391458827546214994″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPCOx6OiI/AAAAAAAABQA/z1qg3aTsxAU/s1600-h/hallie.jpg”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJPCOx6OiI/AAAAAAAABQA/z1qg3aTsxAU/s400/hallie.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391458603661670946″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJOxRg53YI/AAAAAAAABP4/kAjZtjculPU/s1600-h/cobb.jpg”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJOxRg53YI/AAAAAAAABP4/kAjZtjculPU/s400/cobb.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391458312337874306″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJOlhXQYTI/AAAAAAAABPw/qCj-DVJi9Ig/s1600-h/BMooney.jpg”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 286px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/StJOlhXQYTI/AAAAAAAABPw/qCj-DVJi9Ig/s400/BMooney.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391458110433943858″ //abr /Matt B had the early lead, but Austin Caldwell and Skyler came out of the fog at the top as our top two and placed 2nd and 3rd overall. Mt. Triumph: Climbing with the Boys
divdivdivdivIt might be obvious that I love cross country skiing and playing tag on the playground because I do those things a lot. One of my less known passions is climbing. When I was in Junior High I used to climb 1-3 hours every day. I have drifted away from climbing recently so it was a real treat to join my best friends and climb Mt. Triumph in Washington State’s North Cascades. It was my first time on rock for the year and just my second real climb in four years. For me a trip into the mountains is very refreshing and a great way for me to recharge.br //div/divbr /div align=”center”

Lake Placid, NY
I had a fabulous interval session the other day. It was hard, but enjoyably hard, what we call threshold. When I do threshold I get to stretch out the body and use proper race technique but stay out of the lungs-on-fire pain zone. Threshold is the interval type that makes me appreciate my fitness without questioning my sanity for deciding to be a cross country ski racer. (To quote Newell from the other day, “cross country skiing is really fun when you stop.”)
We started in Wilmington and skied up the road toward Whiteface. It was the same road that was used for the Race to the Castle rollerski race last week but we started lower and never made it as far as the start of the rollerski race. From the four corners intersection there’s still a fair amount of elevation gain to play with before you hit the race course.
We started staggered as we came in from our warm-up and Kristina Strandberg jumped in right behind me. We had a nice headwind and since I was leading and knew Strandberg was behind me I went just a little harder than I would have if I had been by myself so she wouldn’t get bored. She came around and led the second interval. It was much easier to follow and draft and be able to relax into Strandberg’s rhythm.
After two intervals we got in the van and drove back to the bottom of the hill where we changed into our skate gear and did two more intervals up the hill. Strandberg led the first & I led the second. It was almost like doing two intervals instead of four. There’s a huge benefit in being able to ski with someone in a hard workout like that. It’s been really nice to be out in Lake Placid working with a lot of different coaches & athletes and see how other people are skiing and training.
And despite how much we make fun of the tourists up here looking at the leaves turning to reds and oranges and yellows, it really is beautiful when we get a sunny afternoon.
p.s. We switched to skate halfway through the workout to simulate the stress of a duathlon race although I don’t recall thinking I had to do any duathlon races this winter.

Intensity
The last three workouts that I have done here in Lake Placid have all been either speeds or intervals. Friday morning we worked on starts, transitions and downhill sprints. That afternoon was did a level 4 classic session of 5×3 minutes. This morning was 2×10 minutes level 3 classic followed by 2x 10 minutes level 3 skate. As Cook says,” Count it”.
This afternoon in between workouts we headed over to the ski jumps to watch the nordic combined national championship. Since they had already jumped this morning we saw the cross country part of the competition. Todd Lodwick won his 20th national championship title and Stig Fjeldheim had a great race as well.
Trying to hang with Newell on L3 skate intervals.
Stig Fjeldheim bib #20
Me, Morgan Smyth and Lindsay Williams wishing we were at the NMU ski team 40 year reunion!
