It was a little dark this morning for pictures but we had a good ski with slalom (both feet for turns and 1 foot for balance) and games. We stayed away from strength because we had a BMD skate test scheduled for the afternoon.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/Ss531OdeviI/AAAAAAAABPY/HmgzSdaEqkA/s1600-h/100_5249.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/Ss531OdeviI/AAAAAAAABPY/HmgzSdaEqkA/s400/100_5249.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390377560307580450″ //abr /After classes we had an all school clean up and then headed to Ball Mtn. Dam for our 1 km uphill skate test. We try to do this test once a month to see how the team is reacting to the training. It is a little tricky doing a field test because conditions tend to change and you can have fast days and slow days. Our test today was in cooler temperatures (50) which will tend to slow down the bearings in the roller skis and thus lead to slower times. We have been roller skiing 4-5 times a week, but with the XC running races that we have been jumping in, we have not done much roller ski intensity (just speed and endurance). We were all interested to see how the times would stack up.br /Overall, we were very happy. We had 7 PR’s and 3 others within 2 seconds of their PR. If you take into account the slower conditions, all 10 of these skiers improved. Two skiers were fighting colds and did not do the test and two others were 7-8 seconds off their PR’s. We will review the training of the two who did not show clear improvement and see if we can get them on a good improvement curve again. This is not a panic situation by any means, it is just a small red flag so we will make sure that everything is fine (sometimes you just don’t have a great day).br /Skiers of the day awards go to Hallie, Cambria, Walker and Skyler (who set a new course record)!br /Here are the times:br /Skyler 2:33br /Bridger 2:42br /Cam 2:54br /J Austin 2:58br /Cobby 2:59br /Walker 3:09br /Tyler 3:22br /Mac 3:23br /Heather 3:24br /Issy P 3:30br /Cambria 3:31br /Rachel 3:34br /Hallie 3:49div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4680416899705879324-4320225110329864148?l=smsxc.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

VERMONT
Middlebury, VT – The Placid camp ended and I shot across the lake (no sign of Champ this time). Off to Corvallis
While the rest of the US ski world spent today climbing to the Castle in what look like very good “toughness training” conditions, I enjoyed a rest day before we head over the mountains for a mini-camp this weekend in Corvallis. Perfect weather and a change of scenery should make for some productive training.

On Snow Intervals
Sunday morning was scheduled to be skating intervals on Awbrey Butte. The forecast was for mixed snow and rain overnight; the reality was more like rain changing to snow. I heard rain every time I woke up in the night, but come morning, it wasn’t raining any more.

Striding up the mountain
leading the charge
Today was the infamous ‘Climb to the Castle’ here in Lake Placid. Its a nice 5 mile race straight up to the top of Whiteface mountain! The forcast called for 90 percent chance of rain, and the weatherman was not wrong on his call, but that didn’t keep all the excited rollerskiers away from the challenge. The race is freestyle, so everyone was skating… except me. (I decided to classic stride after talking to my coaches and team physical therapist. After having 3 surgeries on my legs in a 1 year span my calves still get pretty tight after workouts and I work really hard with stretching and massages to get them to loosen up. It seemed like a bad idea to skate hard up a mountain for almost an hour and undo all the work I’ve put into my legs. Classic skiing is much easier on my lower legs.)
So we took off up the mountain in a huge pack, and since I was classic skiing and everyone else was skating I was expecting to be in the back of the pack right away. But that is not what happened at all. I was in the zone, just racing my race, and look up to see that I am in the lead! I got pretty excited but I also knew I had a very long way to go to the top, so I immediately relaxed and got back into the zone.
I was able to stay in the lead for over a mile, I think almost 2 but I don’t remember exactly. All I know is that I went HARD and it HURT. The cold rain kept trying to freeze me and the wind wanted to push me back to the base of the mountain, but I felt strong and determined to make it to the top as fast as I could. And thats exactly what happened. I reaced the top of the mountain in about 54 minutes, and I am very happy with my effort out there on the mountain. -
Climb to the Castle
This morning all of the skiers that are here at the Olympic training center did a rollerski race this morning called the Climb to the Castle. The Climb to the Castle is a 5 mile race up Whiteface Mountain. I want to emphasize the UP part of it -all but few minutes of the entire race is V1. At least the snow held off but it was still rainy, windy and foggy. But despite the not so great weather it was actually pretty good. I have been anxious about this race for the last few weeks because last year was extremely hard. I went out too fast and I blew up. But all of us girls started out a bit more conservative and relaxed. Around a mile and a half things started to pick up and I was able to hang on to the lead pack until a little after three miles. At the 3 mile mark I couldn’t hang on and I dropped back a little bit. Over the next mile and a half I held things together way more than last year and crossed the finish line breathing hard and feeling tired. I am happy with my race and feeling confident about the upcoming season.
Climbing to the Castle.
5 miles. Up hill. In the rain and wind. A perfect day to be a cross country skier.
