  • Time Trial Season

    Actually, this weekend felt like the beginnings of fall, which would be fine by me. It actually has been just fine training in the sun at 75-80 degrees in the afternoon, but I could do with some signs that winter is on its way. One sure sign of the approaching race season (9 weeks to the first race at West?) is the frequency of time trials in my training.

    I guess 4 in 5.5 weeks isn’t really all that many (basically averaging one every 10-14 days), but it’s nice to always have the next one in sight. This morning Marshall and I did the North Rim TT a week ahead of schedule (I’m not going to be around next weekend and I convinced him to do it with me even though a couple of our other training partners had … (ahem) … a change of heart at the last minute). We battled back and forth the whole way until the finish where, tragically, there was no line to lunge for or camera to determine a winner. Not really a problem, I’m happy to claim a share of the course record for at least a few days.

    This was my second PR of the summer, following up on August’s Westminster West Road effort. 21 seconds off in a 28 minute test today and 20 seconds off in an 18 minute test back in VT. I’m pretty pleased with both those efforts. Of course they were sandwiched around two rather disastrous uphill skate TTs (Century and Edison), so I really don’t know what to make of it. Maybe I need to consolidate the gains I’m making in classic skiing and get back to skating like the last couple of years? That seems like a good plan. Actually, it would be good to go faster than in years past.

    I’m making a quick trip cross-country this weekend for the festivities surrounding my cousin’s wedding. It should be a great chance to catch up with the extended family, have a grand old time and hopefully catch some of that foliage I’m starting to miss.

  • For a good time…

    If you are looking for a good time, and you happen to be in Park City… take a trip down the alpine coaster! My dad was in town last week for buisness, and we took a ride down the alpine coaster. Its a combination of an alpine slide and a roller coaster, and it was a blast!

  • Ski Flex Tester!!!!!!!

    Not much is new here in Oberhof. Tommorrow is the first official training day so it will be good to be able to send some lead down range and get dialed in for the first race on Tuesday.br /br /On another note of of my buddies dad has been hard at work developing a new flex tester. The things is unreal with the data it is able to give back about a ski. It’s actualy kinda scary how much info you can get from this thing. I’m going to cut and paste the info in about the new flex tester and if you have any questions feel free to shoot him and e-mail he is a great guy and will be happy to answer any questions.br /br /I’m going to apologize now for the format but for some reason the Euro Net does not like this certian functions like spell check or cut and paste.!!br /br /p align=”center”DS Nordic Ski Flex Tester IIbr /Overview:br /This snow ski flex tester provides an accurate measurement of total deflection at over 100 points tip to tail. Deflection is directly proportional to the spring compression forces. Of course, the center camber will only show deflection after the ski is compressed to the point it can be measured with the LVDT. The symmetry and balance of the force distribution is influenced by whether the force is applied at the balance point, or behind the balance point where a skier’s weight is located.br /Think about measuring the pressure-distribution along the length of a 2×4 [or a steel I Beam]. You certainly would not use a bunch of fixed load cells on a flat surface and press down in the middle. The entire length needs to be allowed to flex and its profile measured. This allows you to see the effect of knots and other irregularities. We are doing exactly this in order to provide an accurate and repeatable test to allow flex comparisons of skis.br /We selected a spring rate that is stiff enough to give good resistance and soft enough to give us enough travel to measure. Our force-factor is 0.131 Kg per cm2 per cm of displacement. High Peaks preferred to have the y-Axis read out in cm of displacement [the software allows either].br /Note that we are not trying to simulate snow conditions. We are testing skis. As this system is used to test “Favorite/Fast” skis or skis that perform like a skier wants, the Flex Tester curves will identify certain particular characteristics that make the ski perform for the skier in certain specific snow conditions. This becomes obvious with several iterations of testing and reviewing the data on the “Favorite/Fast” skis. The ski technician operating the machine will quickly be able to match a skiers favorite/fast ski curves to a new pair of skis to be sure they are going getting the same performance out of the new skis. This is assuming that we are talking about like snow conditions.br /Please keep in mind we are providing a tool to advance the Sport and we leave determinations as to what is a fast ski to you ski experts and skiers as you correlate flex profile data with what works best for each skier for specific conditions.br /FYI: The software provides the graphical data in Excel® so it is easy to add comments to each sheet and include Ski Brand and Model numbers in the File Name for easy sorting and retrieval.br /We intend the DS Nordic Ski Flex Tester II to become the worldwide benchmark for all ski flex measurements. Please contact us to ask questions or discuss any details. We welcome your feedback.br /DS Flex Testing Systemsbr /715 Mendon Center Road Pittsford, New York 14534 585-750-8746

  • Chasing Andy

    This morning, Andy Newell joined us for some classic intervals. It was great for our group to be able to ski with him and then watch themselves on video. I am quite happy with the way our group looks, but it is pretty clear that we need a bit more strength and fitness before we start beating Andy.br /After a warm up at the Sun Bowl, we drove down to the bottom of the hill below school and got down to business.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUi1hmW-lI/AAAAAAAABEg/SJRcPu25MCQ/s1600-h/100_4681.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 197px; height: 320px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUi1hmW-lI/AAAAAAAABEg/SJRcPu25MCQ/s320/100_4681.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383247232538966610″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUiS1qbkvI/AAAAAAAABEY/IzfIvlejqSk/s1600-h/100_4684.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUiS1qbkvI/AAAAAAAABEY/IzfIvlejqSk/s320/100_4684.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383246636629332722″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUhpj5MzhI/AAAAAAAABEQ/8LYPiGVJK0U/s1600-h/100_4672.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SrUhpj5MzhI/AAAAAAAABEQ/8LYPiGVJK0U/s320/100_4672.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383245927484804626″ //abr /Here is Rachel passing the school entrance.   • World Championships

    I’m in Oberhof Germany for Summer Biathlon World Championships. The flight over went off without any problems other than a couple tight connections. All of my luggage and most importantly my rifle was waiting for me when I arrived. It was about a 3 hr ride to Oberhof from Frankfurt. It is interesting to see all of the different models of vehichles that are avaliable over here and not in the states. Makes me wonder how much vehicle manufactures in the states really want to push more effeicant vehicles because they are obviously avaliabe in other parts of the world!!br /br /br /br /Yesterday we ran from our hotel to the Biathlon venue (3k via a interlinking trail system). The venue is absolutly amazing! I will get some pictures tommorrow because it is one of those things that words can not do justice! The entire town of Oberhof seems to have one thing on it’s mind and that is winter sports, the place is just set up to help athletes succeed. There are tons of Juniors at the hotel and each morning they roll out with there skis to take advantage of the new ski tunnel they opened here last month. Hopefully by weeks end I will be able to make my way over to the ski tunnel and get a few K’s in.br /br /br /br /Thats it for now, Hopefully I will be able to get some pictures tommorrow and let you see what i’m talking about.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2153137138194667387-6244716588580417555?l=rochesternordicracing.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Back Home.

    Well, our last Hayward camp for the year has come and gone.  All around, the camp went really well.  The weather was really nice and we were able to get in a lot of solid training.  The intensity has really picked up in my training so it was nice to get to hammer with some other people.

    The start of the OO Time Trial in July

    The second week of camp included some time trials.  On Thursday we busted out a running and bounding TT around the trails at OO.  Then on Saturday we did the famous up to OO skate time trial.  I was able to PR in both time trials so that means that my training has been paying off.  I am looking forward to hammering with the Northern guys pretty soon here as well.

    First though, I have my first cyclocross race of the season this Sunday.  I am really looking forward to the race even if I have not been biking too much.  It will be a blast either way.  I am hoping that it is not a bad omen that I had the worst mountain bike crash of my life yesterday.  All I have to say is that I have been extremely sore since my digger yesterday while bombing down some sweet single-track on Marquette Mountain.  Remember to wear your helmets kids!
