  • Devo Disc Drills

This week the Devo group did a round of speed disc golf around the course at Birch Hill.  The general idea is to throw your frisbee, chase after it when it flies off course into the woods then repeat as fast as you can until you get it in the basket and continue on to the next hole.

    Going for the final shot.

  • August camp is over

Well, the CXC Team Vertical Limit has just wrapped up an awesome camp in Ironwood, Michigan.  In order to convince the reader of the awesome-ness of this camp, I am going to recount, in my opinion, ”The Top-10 Reasons Why August Camp Was Awesome.”

    10.  Homemade pasta dinner.  Nothing like combining carbo-loading with a cultural experience.

    9.  OD rollerski in Porcupine State park. Beuatiful scenery, wide open road, and Lake Superior waiting at the end.CIMG2407ed

    8. Eating watermelon sitting on top of a waterfall.  CIMG2415

    7. Pasty (rhymes with nasty, but are quite the opposite) dinner.  The pasties came with three 12-oz complimentary bottles of ketchup.  We killed them all.

    6. 16% grade.CIMG2417

    5. Learning that “I can beat you with one arm tied behind my back” might not be such an exaggeration after all.Picture 088ed

    4.  Bee stings, poison ivy, and road rash.  I may be the only person who escaped all of the above (knock on wood).  Most people experienced two of the above and some even got all three.

    3. Track intervals on the square track in Bessemer.  This thing seriously had 4 turns and it took the group the first couple of intervals to determine whether it was 400 meters or 400 yards long.

    2.  No one on the team was carried away by mosquitoes.  In fact, no one even had to get the bug spray out.

    1. Lake Superior: the world’s largest fresh-water ice bath.

  • Name Change: CXC TEAM VERTICAL LIMIT

The CXC Elite Team has a new Title Sponsor for the 2009/2010 ski season and hopefully many more.  The name of the company is Vertical Limit and our new team name is CXC TEAM VERTICAL LIMIT.  You can view the official press release HERE.

We are very excited about this partnership and look forward to an excellent year.

  • Women’s Team in Bethel

Rain…finally! Like the rest of New England the weather here has been HOT. Training this week in Bethel, ME with the U.S. and MWSC Women’s Team has been really good. We’ve been logging a lot of volume hours, lots of long easy distance sessions. The weather has made it very difficult for these long sessions with temperatures in the mid to high 80’s; re-hydrating has been very key to being able to not only finish the current workout, but to ensure that the ladies can make it through the entire week of training.br /br /

We started with a pre-breakfast jog and stretch to help recover from yesterday’s sprint practice. After breakfast we went to Ball Mtn Dam for 1 hour of classic technique work and 1 hour of upper body specific strength (double pole and single pole work). Andy Newell was there to help again and he spent some time with all of the groups and also jumped in the video with every group so that we will be able to compare our technique with his. For this camp, Justin Freeman is working with the older boys, Cameron and Sverre with the younger boys, Poppet with the older girls and Matt with the younger girls. We all train together, but these are our technique groups.br /After the workout and the group pictures (see below) we took a dip in the snow making pond/lake and headed back for lunch.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8Xw0Pn_PI/AAAAAAAAAw8/yq_iRKxhvMg/s1600-h/100_4105.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8Xw0Pn_PI/AAAAAAAAAw8/yq_iRKxhvMg/s320/100_4105.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372539007901629682″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XluFKd1I/AAAAAAAAAw0/WWz59RcCBYc/s1600-h/100_4128.JPG”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 254px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XluFKd1I/AAAAAAAAAw0/WWz59RcCBYc/s320/100_4128.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372538817268578130″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XaNSPQII/AAAAAAAAAws/OcldfeYYqFc/s1600-h/100_4148.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 301px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XaNSPQII/AAAAAAAAAws/OcldfeYYqFc/s320/100_4148.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372538619486486658″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XSHvHy0I/AAAAAAAAAwk/iKNx69tWeLQ/s1600-h/100_4125.JPG”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 257px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XSHvHy0I/AAAAAAAAAwk/iKNx69tWeLQ/s320/100_4125.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372538480558066498″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XE3NU4KI/AAAAAAAAAwc/eTTvnOcnh0c/s1600-h/100_4157.JPG”img style=”float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8XE3NU4KI/AAAAAAAAAwc/eTTvnOcnh0c/s320/100_4157.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372538252783050914″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8W7Fz2jjI/AAAAAAAAAwU/if8H-OZt8EM/s1600-h/100_4150.JPG”img style=”float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8W7Fz2jjI/AAAAAAAAAwU/if8H-OZt8EM/s320/100_4150.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372538084904046130″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8WwK1VQ6I/AAAAAAAAAwM/qmgYcIhud9s/s1600-h/100_4158.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So8WwK1VQ6I/AAAAAAAAAwM/qmgYcIhud9s/s400/100_4158.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372537897273869218″ //abr /This afternoon we had a talk on training and then took a nice run in the rain. That is learning to do the next pole plant and skate push off./divdivAt some point all that matters is executing that next pole plant and push off. Not slipping back on the Skate mill. Time crawls. The 32 campers were greeted by the staff and guest coach Andy Newell. Andy talked about sprint racing and answered questions about warm up, technique, what to do between heats and strategy. We then headed out for our ski. We started with 40 minutes of technique drills, then we did 7-8 leg speeds where the campers got to follow Andy and some of the faster skiers who are here (we have 8 all Americans at camp). The campers were then given 20 more minutes to hydrate and warm up before they had a 1 km skate time trial. Everyone gave it their all and we had new boys and girls course records set by Bridger Tyler and Isabel Caldwell. Following the time trial, we matched up the skiers by speed and sent them out 4 at a time in order to simulate a sprint heat. Isabel held on to win the girls race and Skyler Davis got revenge for the prelim when he nipped Bridger at the finish.br /It was interesting to see that a bunch of the skiers were faster in their head to head race. This was either because of improper warm up for the first race or because they were able to relax and follow someone in the heat.br /We returned to school for a great dinner, got to know each other and are now learning about nutrition and reviewing video from today.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/So3abvfvesI/AAAAAAAAAvE/-etcOeyO8kI/s1600-h/100_3992.JPG”img style=”float:right; • On the Seventh Day They Rested

Pictures from a perfect off day, spend in the waters of the Presque Isle River in the Porcupine Mountains.

Sometimes, you just need to take a little break from skiing, and focus on having fun. So on Monday, with no workout scheduled, Kuz, Karl, J. Diggs, Kelly, Audrey and I went in search of adventure. What we found was breathtaking, and exactly what we were looking for. And when Tuesday rolled around, we were ready, game on, to throw down on some hard uphill v1 intervals. Sometimes, you just need a little reset button, in the form of a relaxing dip!

  • Every Second Counts: typical slowfire shooting session

Per kept time throughout each shot giving me by-the-second updates throughout each shot of the process with the goal of reaching the optimal speed in all parts. This doesn’t necessarily mean the quickest speed, but rather moving in the most efficient way. Getting into position is relatively quick – 10 seconds or so – and the time to the next shot can take almost half or the same amount of time depending on how hard I was just skiing beforehand and how well I can control my breathing. Fast forward to racing this winter – save 4 seconds per stage in a Sprint (prone and standing) that amounts to 8 free seconds. This does not seem like a lot, but the women’s field is competitive and 1st to 60th is often only different by a few minutes. Every second counts./divdivbr //divdivbr //divdivOn any given day there are three ways of shooting: idryfire/i (without live rounds, usually done at the OTC gym in the morning, with the purpose of working on the process of shooting and visualization) islowfire/i (shooting at the range without a heart rate, a wide variety of drills that accentuate different parts of shooting and enable a shooter to focus on and improve speed, accuracy, position and precision) and icombo/i (done either running, but mostly skiing with low to high heart rate). Tomorrow – an easy combo workout before this weekend’s races./divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1362992899157556571-5063163835699766790?l=comeskiwithme.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Knee Update 8/20

Well, running this spring couldn’t have been much better. I trained smart, I was feeling fast and had a handful of satisfying results. Then, as most of you already know, I tore up my knee, with the help of my loving mutt, Montana.  It has been a really long road back, mentally and physically,  even though 10 weeks off of running doesn’t sound that long.

Yesterday was my first day back running. Dr. Pearson gave me the o.k. to head out for a 20 minute run. Lindsey came with and helped me focus on something other than thinking about what every heel strike felt like on my knee.  I found myself looking for pain that never came. Prior to surgery, every time I hit the 15 minute mark I would get overwhelming pain, even in the pool.  I knew that I was in a better position when I can run in the pool (intervals, sprints, distance) for as long as I want.

So, I’m back to training. Which is a huge relief.  I have been classic rollerskiing 5 days a week, running in the pool, riding both road and mountain bike and NOW RUNNING.

Over the next couple of weeks I will begin to increase the length of my runs.  I’m hoping to be at an hour by the end of next week and start to increase the intensity the following week.

I’ll keep you updated. The road back should get a lot more fun from here on out.

    Dan
