It was a great wedding and Kate, his bride, was radiant and beautiful (sorry, I don’t have a picture of her).br /A marriage is not something out of the ordinary, but the group in the wedding party was very special to this old coach, so I am going to brag about them.br /Ryan chose his wedding party to be his high school teammates: Dave Smutok, Andy Newell, Gus Kaeding and his brother Ethan ( Ryan’s sister Mae was also a bridesmaid). br /I have been very lucky to be able to coach a lot of great, dedicated kids. This group of boys was a “dream team”. As a high school team, they were better then any college team in the East. Andy, Ryan and Dave finished 1,2,3 in the combined J1/OJ race at JO’s. Andy, Ryan and Ethan all collected prizes at World Junior Championships (prizes are awarded to top 6 finishes). When Andy and Ryan graduated, they had gone 4 straight years of winning every Eastern Cup for their age group. br /Gus and Andy are still racing, the others skied in college and have moved on with their lives, but they remain great friends.br /It was fun seeing them all together and it got me thinking. What makes a really good team into a great team? Everyone wants to do well, most people work really hard, coaches don’t often change their approach. What is the secret that allows a group to excel?br /I think with this group it was their deep rooted friendship. We always train well and get good exposure (at races and with alumni training with us). We always discuss training, tweak plans, work on technique and try to get adequate rest and nutrition. br /This group just seemed to have that special bond. They had a common goal, they trusted each other and they were totally happy in their pursuit of excellence. Collectively, they took the next step. Everyone who skis wants to be a skier, they WERE skiers. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SpQJw7wxpZI/AAAAAAAAA1E/LACzvaEL3z0/s1600-h/100_4263.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/SpQJw7wxpZI/AAAAAAAAA1E/LACzvaEL3z0/s400/100_4263.JPG” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373930991640487314″ //aSverre, Dave, Andy, Ryan, Mae, Ethan and Gus.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/4680416899705879324-1915708423698774399?l=smsxc.blogspot.com’//div

  • Red Group Racing 2009-08-25 09:25:43

On Saturday morning I joined the NMU cross country running and skiing teams in their annual 3000m time trial at the local high school track. This is about the 6th or 7th time I’ve done it and it hurts every time. I seem to forget that right up until about 100m into the 7 and a half laps. We always start out pretty fast because there can be about 30 girls on the track at the same time so we don’t want to get tangled up together.  I was feeling pretty good up until about lap 5 but was able to hold it together and finish with a time of 11:17. It was about 15 seconds slower than last year but I am not too worried about it because I have been doing more rollerski intervals this summer where last year I did more running intervals. Other than being a great hard work out its the first workout of the fall when everyone from both the running and ski teams get together and its nice to meet all of the new athletes coming in.

  • Boulder Nordic Sport Hires Gunnar Caldwell, Handlers.

    p class=”MsoNormal”For immediate release./p
p class=”MsoNormal”Gunnar Caldwell has been hired on as shaman, guru, director and technical advisor to Boulder Nordic Sport.  Caldwell is widely known as the wunderkind, having combined two endurance family genetics with a lifetime of high fluorocarbon inhalation creating superhero powers that escape most Nordic skiers.  (He has excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.)  He brings with him Amy and Zach Caldwell who have some experience in the ski world, and who will act as his entourage.  Gunnar commented on the recent transition.  “I’m pleased.  Though Boulder is a self-important, dainty place, the food is certainly better than in Canada and I feel that my services here will be more appreciated.”/p
p class=”MsoNormal”BNS owner, Nathan Schultz commented, “Gunnar is key to our business.  In addition to providing assistance to the USST, just having him on the premises makes this sdrug front /s ski business more plausible.”/p
p class=”MsoNormal”In addition to his services for Boulder Nordic Sport, Gunnar will be consulting for the US Ski Team, which will be useful as he is the only other American that can speak Freeman./p
p class=”MsoNormal”Since  2006, Boulder Nordic Sport’s mission has been sinterstellar global domination/s to provide world cup service to people who can barely stand upright on skis.  “I’m not only capable of standing upright on skis,” explained Gunnar, “But I’ve been doing it since I was in utero.”/p

  • Chicken Bingo

I enjoy a game of Chicken Bingo. I have never been much for gambling, but as far back as I can remember I have enjoyed this game

    mother's day 126

My brother and Me placing our bets

For those of you unfamiliar with the game here are the rules:

    mother's day 107

    How it Works:

    • Squares are sold for 50 cents.
    • If the chicken poops on your square you win $10.
    • There is one winner per card, leave your contact info and we will let you know if you win

    The Rules:

    1. There are no ties, the most poop wins.
    2. The judge makes the final decision.
    3. You may talk to the chicken but you can’t touch the cage or the chicken.
    4. Anyone can play.

    mother's day 128

Cheering is a big part of the fun. mother's day 130

My brother Chad was one of the day’s big winners

Chicken Bingo is a great way to attract people to any booth at a fair, festival or expo.  This particular contest is part of the Methow Conservancy booth at Wintrhop, WA 49ers Day.  Stop by the CXC booth at next years Birkie Expo to see if we brought chickens.

My workout on Sunday ended short after I took a spill mountain biking. Thankfully I had my Rudy Project helmet on.  The impact was great enough that my helmet cut into my forehead and cracked.  I still have a small headache which makes me belive I had a minor concussion.  In case you were wondering, my ‘concussion’ photo saved right next to my ‘chickenBingo’ folder and I though those pictures were more entertaining.

  • A much needed update

Sorry about the technical difficulties I was having with my website. It should be all fixed now, and I will do my best to get you up to speed…
I spent 5 weeks training out in Park City, Utah with the U.S. Ski Team Coaches earlier this summer. Training was going awesome out here, and when it was time for me to fly back home I didn’t really want to leave. So I talked to my coaches and told them that I wanted to move out here! They were excited and so was I!
I flew back to Minnesota, spent a week with the family and I visited Allergy Associates of LaCrosse (my headgear sponsor from last season). Then I drove to Marquette to gather my belongings and spend a week there, then I drove back to Minnesota to spend another week with my parents.
Then I packed my car and drove across the country!!! Now I am back out in Park City training hard and feeling great.
That should help get you up to speed for now… much more to come!

  • A good start…

Really stoked about the good start to the school year.  It seems like everyone made a very smooth transition this first week, and we saw some clear progress in a number of the technique items we discussed during a video session the previous Saturday.  The XC runners got in their upper body maintenance sessions and the full-time skiers were pretty well on it, with great displays on a couple of tough rollerski interval sessions.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been spending some extra time with my shooting and I set out for this camp to be a working period. After a full summer of training this is the time to retune my skiing and shooting techniques before I head into a pre-competition phase of training later in the fall. It is quite a transformative time and I will be happy to emerge from it at the end of this camp. Needless to say my races were an important part, not necessarily to race, but to work on an improved shooting process at a high intensity .
