Spring Skiing at the Olympic Trails
The MVNT took advantage of the last weekend of grooming at the 2010 Olympic Nordic trails for a perfect weekend of skiing in the Cost Mtns of British Columbia. Many of the athletes also honed their skills on the Biathlon range shooting next to the U.S. Biathlon team who were also training on the Olympic trails. In the afternoons, when the snow turned to slush, the team went back to Squamish for dry-land training which included a run/hike to the top of the Squamish Chief.br /What a great opportunity to preview the Olympic trails!br /br /embed type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” src=”http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf” width=”288″ height=”192″ flashvars=”host=picasaweb.google.comhl=en_USfeat=flashalbumRGB=0x000000feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Fmtnmind%2Falbumid%2F5334791796830302001%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer”/embeddiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/489212310283984495-6905579218117470689?l=methowvalleynordicteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

Spring Cleaning
I really like snow. Obviously, as a skier I enjoy snow’s slippery properties which allow me to glide around the woods. Beyond skiing I like that everything looks good covered in a fresh blanket of snow. br /br /Spring has arrived and we have been doing our part at ‘The Club’ to keep our environment looking good.” A ton of trash has accumulated on the playground, the Pow Wow grounds and the trails, so on Monday we took a trip to ‘The Store’ for a treat with a little trash pick-up on the way.br /br /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIG1ZDL8I/AAAAAAAAAOA/xr9FWUjeFsg/s1600-h/trashDay+006.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIG1ZDL8I/AAAAAAAAAOA/xr9FWUjeFsg/s400/trashDay+006.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334452303380557762″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”A Beautiful Spring Day in Hayward/spanbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a style=”font-style: italic;” onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIGgpPGOI/AAAAAAAAAN4/hUCMvAqEsok/s1600-h/trashDay+004.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIGgpPGOI/AAAAAAAAAN4/hUCMvAqEsok/s400/trashDay+004.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334452297811302626″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;” Tamiqua, Trinity and Shanna/span were the top Trash Collectorsbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIGR8adOI/AAAAAAAAANw/K5_7b2SKv5Q/s1600-h/trashDay+001.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIGR8adOI/AAAAAAAAANw/K5_7b2SKv5Q/s400/trashDay+001.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334452293865207010″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”A Clean Forest is a Happy Forest/spanbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIHLMymGI/AAAAAAAAAOI/fRC3GNs_968/s1600-h/trashDay+008.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SgfIHLMymGI/AAAAAAAAAOI/fRC3GNs_968/s400/trashDay+008.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5334452309234718818″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Can you Hula?/span span style=”font-style: italic;”Get outside and try it/spanbr //divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8083254037538554650-5718725945970219532?l=in-the-arena-brian.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

KO & LAV’s Super-Awesome-For-Girls-Only Ski Camp
Stina & I hosted our inaugural training camp this weekend for girls in the old-enough-to-roller-ski-but-young-enough-to-respect-us age bracket. We had a small group but it allowed for great customization and we got to work with each of our athletes (I feel so proud to be able to claim athletes as mine!) on what they needed to focus on. This was a good thing because we had a wide range of abilities. But ALL the girls were super tough and up for whatever we suggested. I love having tough girls around!
KO & I have a very spontaneous style and I felt a little guilty for subjecting these girls to our whims and impromptu decisions but they took it in stride. All-in-all I think we accomplished our goals for the weekend: have fun, teach some technique, inspire, not kill anyone. We also managed to go over some topics sitting around and while we were out trainings such as goal setting, college & skiing, coaches, training hours & types, boys (come on, we’re not that mature that we’re not still giggling about boys).
We have a long list of things we should do better if we repeat the camp. Actually, for just about any activity I pursue I have a long list of things I could improve upon, so there’s nothing new there!

Hitting the Road Again!
After a few weeks of training it’s time to start hitting the road.
I had some of my first Rollerskiing intervals this week along with a VO2 Max test and strength test. Training is back in full swing again. The weather has been great here in Minnesota. Lots of sunshine and around 60 degrees. I will admit I am jealous of the many skiers who got to take a little spring break either in the mountains or at the beach!
I took the opportunity this spring to catch up with a lot of CXC and personal sponsor obligations. I felt like I had a fulltime job, as most days I couldn’t even get out to do other activities! I also caretake at my apartment building, which helps reduce the the rent, so my spring was filled with a lot of post winter raking and cleanup around the grounds. Not the most glamorous spring but it’s what I have to do to afford to race all winter.
Now in less then a week my training camp season will start as well in Bend, OR. I have never been to Bend before so I am excited to see and ski somewhere new! My coach will not be there, so I will be training with the Methow Valley Ski Team and Scott Johnston thanks to the help of fellow ITA athlete Brian Gregg.
I hope to post some videos from the workout this weeked when I get my camera working again.

First long roller ski of the season
I wanted to do a long roller ski this weekend and didn’t want to go alone. It seems like it’s been so long since I’ve trained with a group and was missing it. So I put out some feelers to see if anyone would join me. I got some bites from Mel and Dave and we cajoled Brent and Michele to join us when we saw them at practice on Thursday. Then Kevin decided to bag his mountain bike race and joined us too so we had a nice crew. We had agreed to go on the Gateway Trail for an easy ski, but little did we know that there was an MS sponsored bike ride on the trail that day and about 2500 riders were out. We weren’t sure how it would go with all those riders, but we were there and so we braved the crowd. It wasn’t too bad going out since most of the riders were fast and experienced and had no trouble going around us. Plus they could see us coming for a ways so they had time to get in line. It was a little shakier coming back. The riders at the back of the crowd were less experienced, had difficulty maneuvering quickly, and were more likely to be riding side-by-side. The fact that we were going in opposite directions now didn’t help either since we came upon them with less warning. I was leading and could see the fear in many faces as they struggled to maneuver back to their side of the trail. There was only one mishap when a large group passed and some slowed to quickly for others. No one hit the ground, but it was close. Over all it turned out to be a fine ski on a fine morning. I’m looking forward to many more to come.div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-5259388947950505155?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’//div
