  • Back to Work

The official start to the 2009/2010 season is here and I am back to work in Whistler, BC at our first team training camp of the season.  As always, I used the month of April as a break from biathlon and the day-to-day routine of training.  Although I trained some in April, I was not following any specific plan; if I woke up and felt like going for a run, I did.  Taking a break from scheduled training is very important for me and it’s what allows me to keep a high level of focus through the next 11 months of the year.

I spent my first two recovery weeks at home catching up with friends and family and getting back into Alpine skiing.  After that, I went to Puerto Rico with my girlfriend for some much needed time in the sun.  Getting as far away from snow as possible always feels good in the spring and this spring was definitely no exception.  This was my first trip to Puerto Rico and I had a great time.  On vacation I spent some time snorkeling, kayaking and I even spent a day hiking in the rain forest.

After Puerto Rico, I flew over to Germany to attend two weddings.  From there I flew to Colorado with two other teammates to work with one of the coaches from the Olympic shooting team.  After that, I headed to Whistler to join the rest of the team at our first camp.

It feels good to back in the swing of things with training and it is especially motivating training on the same trails that will hold the Olympics this winter.  Despite some warm temperatures, the skiing here has been surprisingly good and we have taken advantage of that by putting in 2 to 3 hours of skiing every morning.

After Whistler, I will fly to LA for one day to do some promotional stuff for the Olympics and then I will finally return home on May 15th. I have not spent so much time at home this spring so I am really looking forward to getting back into my own bed and unpacking my bags for a few months.

  • Random News

There’s nothing really important to say but numerous random articles that have floated to the surface lately. First off, Rossignol is feeling the economic crunch harder than most winter sport companies and will be cutting not only jobs (approximately 30% of their work force), but also cutting wages of the athletes that currently use their equipment. Notable cross country athletes include Kuitunen, Saarinen, Hjelmeset.

In Germany, 31 year old Jens Filbrich has become a father with the birth of his son Lennox.

After Alex Harvey’s breakthrough season, a rift has occurred between him and Cross Country Canada (CCC) with regards to him being on the senior national team or the development team. You can read all about it over at Faster Skier here.

The “Skiippagurra” video which featured the Norwegian ladies team including Johaug and Størmer Steira now has a sequel. The newest video was filmed while the Norwegian ski team had a team building weekend in Trysil.

Finally, Petter Northug is not the only Norwegian cross country star playing soccer in the off season. The soon-to-be Norwegian superstar Ingvild Flugstad Østberg will be playing soccer for her local ladies team Gjøvik FK.

Short and sweet, til next time.

An update on my torn Achilles tendon.
The last time I wrote, I was very frustrated with my progress, or lack thereof. The first thing the doctor told me when he diagnosed the injury was that no healing could take place until the swelling went away. Additionally, every single person I talked with who […]

  • 2009-2010 Begins

We’re back!  The 2009-2010 training year is underway and Bryan, Gus and I just got back from CXC Elite team training camp #1 in Hayward, WI.  The week was full of fitness testing and evaluations, including the 3000m run, VO2max testing, the strength test, and individual and team meetings.  Bryan and I left the camp a few days early for me to tie up some loose ends at school and to see Tanya Cook’s graduation from NMU.

I took most of the month of April completely off of training.  I started working at the Upfront and Co. again, and I slept more than I ever have in my life.  I am finely feeling rested and I am eager to start training.  May is a fun month because the weather gets nice and there is some freedom to do what you want.

I have organized my calendar for the year and Bryan and I are looking to do some more ski clinics.  If you or someone you know is interested please e-mail info@xcskialliance.com.  We do clinics for groups of all ages and ability levels.  You can read about some of last year’s clinics by clicking HERE.

I am currently one elective credit away from receiving my master’s degree in exercise science and I am excited to do more with my endurance-based personal training business, Alliance Training this year.  I had some great results with this program last year and I already have a couple of clients lined up for the 2009-2010 training year.  If you are one of the many people out there without a coach, or if you are interested in taking your training to another level, please check out my brochure and contact me directly at mariastuber@xcskialliance.com.  Pricing is very negotiable.

  • Springtime Outside the Schoolyard

Just before heading off to Whistler in search of snow on the 2010 Olympic trails, I joined Mr. Peck’s fifth grade class for another kind of search. • A Quick Hit At Portage Lake

I should have known that one ski trip to Skookum Glacier wasn’t going to satiate my lust for crust this spring. Like any true addict, “just one” fix quickly leads to an overwhelming urge for another. My body may be injured, but my mind still craves copious amounts of sun and snow. […]
