  • Biking and Rollerskiing

The City of Lakes Tri-Loppet is only two months away and there is a lot of training to get in before then. During the past two weeks the kids at Anderson and Anwatin Middle school have been working very hard.

On Monday the Anderson group which is almost 20 strong ventured on foot to the nearby Midtown Greenway Coalition (MGC). The Midtown Greenway is a great asset here in South Minneapolis because it bisects the Grand Rounds route, which circumnavigates Minneapolis, in half allowing for quicker commuting across town.

    The Coalition Vision:
We envision a green urban pathway that provides the anchor for a regional, sustainable transportation network; and encourages healthy diverse communities to prosper, participate, and connect to the region.

The path is built along the old railroad grade and thus is recessed below street level with many unique bridges along the straight path.

The group was given bicycles and helmets to use for the afternoon from the MGC. They also provided a guide who lead us in safety and etiquette along the trail. We biked to Lake Calhoun and back and despite the rainy weather had a great experience.

On Wednesday the Anderson Elementary kids had the opportunity to Rollerski. This was awesome! The Rollerskis are a part of the City of Lakes Nordic Ski Foundation and are used for kids groups in the community.

We had just enough boots and skis for all 10 kids to participate at once. For most of the kids this was their first time on Rollerskis and they were incredible! We focused on balance, turning and accelerations in our relay races.

After the Rollerskiing we progressed to the woods where we held a mini time trial to get baseline times for everyone. Everyone left at 15 second intervals and their times will serve as a benchmark as we continue training through the summer!
  • Spring at ‘The Club’

It is great to be back in Hayward, WI. I have spent the better parts of the last two months traveling, racing, training, and relaxing in Ontario, Alaska, and Hawaii. My first afternoon at the ‘Club’ we went on a hike. It felt really strange that the last time I was at the Club we skied on the same trails. br /br /Training just once a day has been great, allowing me to be at ‘The Club’ everyday of the week. • The First Day of the New Year

Tomorrow marks the first day of the new year–for xc ski racers. The coming week includes May 1st, which is traditionally the time when skiers start doing a little more intensity after having the opportunity to take a mental and physical break from training and racing. By this time of year, we’ve also had the chance to analyze the previous season, write down new goals, and map out what needs to

  • Super-Short Distance Nationals Wrap-up…

pWhile many racers were suffering through wicked cold temps, super long races, ash (WTF??) and general Alaska-ness in late March, a few racers held it down in Park City for Super-Short Distance Nationals./p
pWe had quite a field, including but not limited to Andy Newell, Carl Swenson,  Simeoni, CWubb, the best female jumpers in the world, and others….All-in-all, we had over 25 national titles represented at this 2supnd/sup annual and highly successful event.  And somewhere in the neighborhood of 13 Vermont high school state championships.  Booyah!!/p

  • Springtime

It’s been a great month of April, with warm weather and plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy some unstructured “training” before ramping back up into the 09 dryland season. Here in the Methow there’s been lots of mountain biking, backcountry corn skiing, road biking, loafing around… Scott’s been busy updating some of our training apparatus and building new tools of training/torture for us this season. We’ve gotten out a few times to scout some new terrain for uphill striding and rollerski intervals, as it’s a constant challenge to find decent pavement with minimal traffic ’round here.br /br /div style=”text-align: left;”Our official training year starts up tomorrow, and we’ve got a bunch of great ideas on methods for this year. Stay tuned!br /br /div style=”text-align: left;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Mg2hQbkHkNs/SfTcOM-DFmI/AAAAAAAAACQ/vyf6gOVV6tQ/s1600-h/passride.com”img style=”margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 359px; height: 238px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Mg2hQbkHkNs/SfTcOM-DFmI/AAAAAAAAACQ/vyf6gOVV6tQ/s320/passride.com” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5329126395643893346″ border=”0″ //a/div/divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2910103639238326543-1505270991970613558?l=methowolympicdevelopment.blogspot.com’//div

  • Crust Skiing AK

With nights below freezing and clear days the crust has been immaculate in the early mornings at Placer Valley. Crust skiing in the mountains is one of my favorite activities of all time. Just about every time I go, I am constantly reminded why I LOVE to ski. For those of you who have never been crust skiing and can’t grasp my enthusiasm toward this blissful sport, imagine this: it’s like

  • Hetland Exits

ESPN.com, that noted outlet for all news related to Nordic skiing, reports that Norwegian sprinter Tor Arne Hetland has retired from competitive skiing. Plagued last year by asthma and a nagging knee injury, Hetland still managed to finish third in the sprint World Cup standings. This finish caps a pretty damn good career: Hetland finished third in the sprint standings in 2001 and 2006, second in

  • DVD Recommendation

I just watched X-country and was pretty impressed with it.  Not your typical ski film, with only a little race footage.  Instead lots of ‘behind the scenes’ footage of World class athletes living the training camp life: training, eating and relaxing.  Probably the best thing is the interviews – some great candid insights from athletes, coaches, and support staff members – a valuable insight for the aspiring junior skier.

    Can be purchased here

    Trailer can be seen here

Footage from movie with Swedish/Norwegian narration (and a little English at the start)

(I of course have a copy that can be borrowed too.)

  • Tor Arne Hetland Retires

It was announced today that Tor Arne Hetland is retiring from competitive skiing and a long and illustrious career. Hetland was one of the first sprinting stars of cross country skiing after is was introduced during the 1999 World Cup season. The 35 year old veteran of the circuit decided to hang up the skis after ending the season this past season early to have knee surgery to remove cartilage on the back of his left
knee. He cites on of the reasons to retire as he wanted to go out while still on top.

This season Hetland was a very impressive third overall in the World Cup Sprint rankings. There is already talk that Hetland will stay with the Norwegian squad, but hold the roll as mentor to the women’s sprint team in an attempt to replicate the dominance that has been shown by their male counterparts.

I’m very surprised with his decision, with the Olympics only 10 months away I thought Hetland would’ve retired next year. It would’ve been great to see another Zorzi/Hetland show down on North American soil one last time. It must of been a tough decision whether to continue training or to call it quits. I have a strong feeling that his rehabilitation after knee surgery had a large influence on his decision.

In other news, France has named their male and female 2009-2010 national teams. They can be found here. Also, it appears that Arild Monsen will be the new sprint coach for Sweden, not the head trainer as initially thought.

If you’ve ever visited the site before you might notice that the site is totally revamped. The first template that was being used couldn’t encompass what I wanted in this site so I opted to go and change it to make the site a little more practical and aesthetically pleasing. Hope you enjoy it.

    Enjoy your weekend.
