  • Stockholm Sprints Live Recap

Apparently all the cool kids do live coverage now, but I swear I didn’t know FS was doing it when I started watching my illicit NRK steam. This internet business is getting intense.. I’ll see your live blog and raise you a… um… live recap? With more typos? Who knows. Anyway….Women’s quarters were totally predictable until –Petra’s quaterfinal — she put her tips straight into

  • Europe here we come

A group of athletes including Hans Halvorsen, Elena Luethi, John McGlenn, David Sinclair, and Daniel Moore are traveling to Europe today. We’re headed to Austria (Kossen) for a couple days of training before going to Northern Italy (Mals) for a week of skiing and racing. We’ll be back in the snow and mountains soon!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1847564486460994594-6778384445850146455?l=gmvsxc.blogspot.com’//div

  • 2009 Iditarod Trail Invitational: Finger Lake to Rohn (aka The Rainy Pass Adventure)

This is part two of a three part story. Part one is here. I went a little overboard in my account of the Rainy Pass section of the race, putting together timelines and maps, because I think some people had false impressions about what actually happened. The information that was reported during […]

  • To the King’s Palace!

Tomorrow sees the final sprint of the season take place in the classic technique and the final opportunity for athletes to grab the maximum allotted points for a single race. For the races in Falun the point values will be cut in half due to the “min-tour” set-up (ie. 1st is 50pts instead of 100pts). The loop that will surround the Royal Palace should rather quick as qualifying times last year were as fast as 2:12 and 2:32 for the men and women respectively. The focus of the races will undoubtably be on the two races for the Overall Title between Majdic/Kowalcyzk and br /Cologna/Northug.br /br /Last year saw Svartedal prove critics wrong as he qualified in 29th position but eventually won the race. This was his third time winning the Royal Palace sprint, he also grabbed the gold in

  • The Judy Swank Memorial Ski.

This past weekend Maria and I were able to head back to Rhinelander to participate in the Judy Swank Memorial Ski at the Northwood’s Golf Course.

As many of you know, Judy was my high school ski coach; however, she was much more than just my first ski coach.  She was a mentor and all-around wonderful person.  She was an amazing role model and always kind person.  She was also the wife of an extremely nice man Lee, and a mother of another great role model and inspiration for me, Adam.  She will be greatly missed but always remembered for all the great things she accomplished during her lifetime.

For the ski we could not have asked for a better day.  It was 50 degrees without a cloud in the sky!  We were met by around 100 other enthusiastic skiers skiing around the very well groomed trails.  We were skiing in Judy’s honor and memory as she had always wanted to complete the 10 Worldloppet races.  She completed 9 of the races and we were skiing her tenth.  It was a great ski with wonderful people followed by a celebration of Judy.  We sang a few songs and told our favorite Judy stories.  It was a very emotional event and something I will always remember.

  • 2009 Iditarod Trail Invitational Report: Knik to Finger Lake

Disclaimer: This race journal turned out a lot longer than I expected. I wanted to capture as many details as possible for my own benefit, so I don’t forget them as the race fades into memory. I thought about doing an abridged version for my blog, but that would take even […]

  • Update

There was a lot going on this past week.  The NCAA Championships were held in Rumford, ME, the Junior Olympics took place in Truckee, CA, and the Canadian National Championships happened in Duntroon, ON.  Unfortunately, I did not participate in any of these events, but I have been having a good time and getting some things done in Marquette.  I finished the first draft of my thesis proposal, and I completed my one credit directed study.  I have also started an internship at Advantedge Training, and I have been working with a WI junior skier on technique and training ideas for next season.  Bryan and I drove to Rhinelander, WI last weekend to attend the Judy Swank Memorial Ski, which was beautiful!  We also got a chance to catch up with some good friends that we had not seen for a long time.  We miss you Ted Foley.

  • Predictions: Recap and Stockholm

This weekend’s climactic 50k race in Trondheim saw an unheralded skier of Finnish extraction rise to the top of a competitive field. Yeah, Jauhojarvi won the race itself, but this son of Finland managed to eke out another win in the ultra-competitive test of knowledge about World Cup ski racing, a.k.a. the Nordic Commentary Project “World Cup Prediction Challenge.” In the interest of transparency

  • one small step

One small step, a limp, and another small step, limp, step, limp…  Thats how I get around these days!  The good news is that I’m getting around!  Its not fast, its not pretty, and it can get pretty painful, but I can get out of bed and hobble a few laps around my moms tiny house before I have to lay down with my legs proped up on some pillows.

The doctor told me to walk as much as I can without over-doing it.  So thats what I’m doing right now.  Walking a little bit, resting alot, and walking a little bit more…  :^)

  • Trondheim 30k Classic Mass Start Recap

If we were an actual news outlet we would have had this post up Saturday afternoon, however, writing an actual recap of an event that is virtually impossible to view in the USA takes a bit of time. Admittedly it can be gotten live if you’re deft with your peer-to-peer-tv internetting, but I was busy getting crushed at Bretton Woods during that time, so live viewing was out. Thanks to the

I got an email from Trond Flagstad, head coach of the UAA Nordic Ski Team. • New Addition to the Family!

We have a new member of the household here in Minneapolis. His name is…well he doesn’t have an official name yet! We have been calling him anything from “dog” to “sable” to “Kate Moss.”

He is a 3 year old Alaskan Husky that Ben, my boyfriend, and I rescued from the Minneapolis Animal Humane Society. He was a transfer from another agency and arrived with a few other Huskies that were all rescued together. He is going to make a great running and skiing companion someday. Right now though he is very skinny and extremely shy. The goal will be to start him with a few walks a day and gradually increase to short runs once he starts to gain weight and get adjusted to being on a leash. Hopefully we can get him out in the woods, although still on a leash, by early summer!

We are excited to give him a second chance and hope he enjoys living with us.
