Bridger and Paddy led our boys placing 2nd and 3rd, while the girls won the team event with Heather in 4th, Rachel in 5th, Issy in 6th, Cam in 7th and Hallie in 8th. br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJleNBJGlQI/AAAAAAAAEd0/KAXF8CM1fK0/s1600/IMG_8489.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJleNBJGlQI/AAAAAAAAEd0/KAXF8CM1fK0/s400/IMG_8489.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519546396057179394″ //aPaddy and Bridger make their move and pass the 2nd place runner.br /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJldu6IDMoI/AAAAAAAAEds/WF3p_nnBNsY/s1600/IMG_8481.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJldu6IDMoI/AAAAAAAAEds/WF3p_nnBNsY/s400/IMG_8481.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519545878777639554″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJldJS_iQ5I/AAAAAAAAEdk/95VgYyjS2Hk/s1600/IMG_8509.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJldJS_iQ5I/AAAAAAAAEdk/95VgYyjS2Hk/s400/IMG_8509.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519545232617784210″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlcnYLYWbI/AAAAAAAAEdc/2qxvo3GeLQg/s1600/IMG_8507.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlcnYLYWbI/AAAAAAAAEdc/2qxvo3GeLQg/s400/IMG_8507.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519544649894091186″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlb__IarDI/AAAAAAAAEdU/G4HWVkrzvqs/s1600/IMG_8500.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 355px;” src=”http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlb__IarDI/AAAAAAAAEdU/G4HWVkrzvqs/s400/IMG_8500.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519543973155875890″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlbf55nafI/AAAAAAAAEdM/nYDGTtTZEdE/s1600/IMG_8513.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlbf55nafI/AAAAAAAAEdM/nYDGTtTZEdE/s400/IMG_8513.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519543421995805170″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJla44y4gNI/AAAAAAAAEdE/ovZLLWkBMdc/s1600/IMG_8515.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJla44y4gNI/AAAAAAAAEdE/ovZLLWkBMdc/s400/IMG_8515.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519542751684231378″ //abr /a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlaicYGLZI/AAAAAAAAEc8/B9TdeoivQkg/s1600/IMG_8520.JPG”img style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_H2SCM3lmKm8/TJlaicYGLZI/AAAAAAAAEc8/B9TdeoivQkg/s400/IMG_8520.JPG” border=”0″ alt=””id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519542366098566546″ //aAfter the race we all went 100 yards down the road to the Tyler house for a delicious dinner.   • Sun Valley and Onward…

    Tim and I just finished up a great dryland camp in Sun Valley with a huge group of skiers there from the USST, Sun Valley ODT, Methow, and CXC.  After having barely ventured out of Craftsbury all summer it was nice to mix up the training with a new location and some new people.  It was hard training with a lot of intensity, a few very tough time trials,  and some awesome OD runs and hikes in the mountains.  I also added some golf training to the plan with a few recovery sessions at the Sun Valley Club putting greens and a round of “Cabin Golf” at Mikey Sinnott’s cabin on Petit Lake.  The mornings were quite chilly adding the excitement of fall but with the exception of one cold rainy day, Sun Valley lived up to its name with lots of sunny skies.  Here are a couple pictures from one of our runs up to Pioneer Cabin at 9400′.

    I’ll try to post a few more pictures as soon as I upload them from my camera.  Also check out www.nccsef.org where Pete Vordenberg has posted lots of updates and great pictures from the camp.

    It was a really fun camp so I was sad to leave but luckily there are many more adventures ahead!  Late last night I flew back to Vermont and now I’m headed to Dartmouth as soon as I finish hurriedly throwing all my belongings into the back of my car.  School starts bright and early tomorrow morning…..uh oh!

  • How Often Can You Go Fast?

    No pretty pictures this time, folks, sorry!  Instead a couple of regular old sortable tables.  No grand lesson here, just a simple question: how often can the best skiers in the world ski fast enough to finish in the top 3?  The top 10?  And so on.  (I apologize that some of the column headers are hard to read.  They are the proportion of of races each skier landed in the top 3, 5, 10, 20 and 30, in that order.)

    One table each for distance and sprint; men and women will have to share a table in each case.  For the distance skiers, I’ve only included skiers who started racing around 1994 or so to make sure I’m not counting just the last season of someone who raced through most of the eighties.  That means no Bjoern Daehlie, sorry.  Or plenty of other big names.  Just so you know, his percentages were freakishly high, but then, I’m missing at least two seasons of results for him.  Only WC, OWG and WSC races are counted.

    I guess I take it back, there is a grand lesson here.  I suppose I meant for you to think about how we measure success in a sport like cross country skiing, where the best skiers in the world finish outside the top ten a large proportion of the time (seriously, check out the tables).  It’s easy to remember all the times these crazy athletes skied super fast.  Not so with their failures.  It sort of reminds me of baseball, where the best hitters in the game fail around 65% of the time.

    As always, the RSS feed doesn’t like these tables, so you’ll have to click through to the site to see them.

  • Salomon/City of Lakes Trail Loppet

    Matt Liebsch and I went 1-2 in the half marathon this weekend in Wirth Park in Minneapolis.  It is pretty cool to do a trail marathon in an urban environment.  The pack started out hard and we pushed the pace the entire race.  Matt broke away at mile 7 and after letting him gap the rest of the group I bridged up to him and we took the lead.  There is a lot of terrain in Wirth Park and a mile or so later we found ourselves running with no flags or trail markers.  We had taken a wrong turn somewhere.  Luckily Matt was able to get us back on course quickly but we had dropped back to 8th and 9th.   At this point Matt took off and I started the chase.  With about 2 miles to go we were back in 1-2 with Matt about 10 seconds up on me.  I finally caught up to him with 1.5 miles to go.  We slowed down, drank our feed bottles and settled in for the battle to the finish.  It wasn’t as close as I thought it would be, we threw our feed bottles and Matt took off.  My legs were pulsing and on the verge of cramping and we finished 17 seconds apart.

    My favorite races are the ones that are hard fought.  Matt and I have had many battles in skiing and running.  We train together a lot too and it is fun to continually push and challenge each other. Congratulations Matt on your race.

    I think this year we are going to keep track of our total time in all the races we do together for a ‘Tour De France” style competition.  My guess is we will be in a sprint during the final races of the year.
