  • U.S. Ski Team Camp in SV

The first week of camp with the U.S. Ski Team just finished up today. The week was filled with intensity, distance, speed, strength and over-distance work-outs.

The week began with a speed workout where we focused on good technique at high speeds. This entailed 3 sets of 6×15 sec speeds focusing on our starts in the first set, skiing smooth transitions around corners in the second set, and over-speed drop-ins in the third set. It is a very focused workout that sees improvements each time it is done.

Much to almost everyone’s dismay, it poured rain for our 2 hour run! Now, I know this is Sun Valley, but it does rain occasionally. Everyone was a good sport and we had a great muddy and wet run!

Friday we had a tough workout…a skate sprint time trial. It was set up to simulate a real skate sprint race. Because of the limited number of areas to roller-ski here, we were not able to ski the rounds in heats. Instead, each round was started individually with 15 second intervals. Ultimately, it was a race against yourself each time.

Without much rest, we had a hard double-pole interval workout the next day. 5x3min double-pole up a gradual hill. I was pretty tired from the previous days workout, but it was good to get another hard effort in. Later that afternoon, the SV ODT and the U.S. Ski Team were invited to play field games with the Sun Valley devo and prep team, ages 6-12. We played flag tag and had fun with relays.

Today we went on a great run in the Sawtooth Mountains, at Redfish Lake. The weather was beautiful and the workout was fun. To top off our three hour run, we stopped at Mikey’s cabin at Petite Lake and enjoyed a barbecue of great food, thanks to Carol Sinnott, swam in the lake, played bochi and horse shoes, and enjoyed hanging in the sun! Thanks you Sinnotts!

We have a day off scheduled for tomorrow before we head into another week of full-on training. Definitely looking forward to it!

  • Exploring the north

    DSC03472

Since at least some time last summer, we’ve been talking about running on the northern part of the Long Trail for a workout. Sure, the Stowe area is nice, but there are all these great mountains up near the border that we have never even explored! For some reason, it had never happened.

Well, now it has! Lauren and I did an OD on the Long Trail going over Jay Peak today. It would have been fun to do in a big group, but 60% of the team is gone, and the boys wanted to go mountain biking, so it was just the two of us. No matter, we had a lot of fun! While it wasn’t as sunny as yesterday, it was pretty much a perfect fall day, and it didn’t start raining until this afternoon, so we really lucked out. I loved the views and the golden color of the grass covering the alpine ski trails.

    DSC03463

On the way down the other side of Jay Peak, our run got kind of strange. The Long Trail enters the woods for a while, then meets back up with the ski trails briefly. At this weird intersection, we got really confused. The next section (which we later identified) really wasn’t blazed at all, so we weren’t sure where to go. We even went further down the ski trails for a little while, but decided this was a bad idea. Eventually, we just tried the unblazed trail, and found a lone blaze in the woods a bit. Then we started encountering strange signs warning us about how easy it was to get lost. The first one listed the number of people who had gotten lost on two different days. The second one was a real winner:

    confusing sign

It’s not just photo quality: 95% of the writing on this sign had washed off. We pieced together the following: “This is the trail where if people get lost they spend the night outside. Is it worth it?”

We were a little bit scared. The blazes were few and far between. What on earth was going on? Were we in a horror film? If we continued down the trail, would we be taken by strange creatures or angry mountain men with guns who were sick of yuppy hikers crossing their land?

On the way back (we had to do an out-and-back because we took only one car), we came across a sign that we hadn’t noticed on the way down, which clarified the situation. The signs were meant for skiers and snowboarders. Yes, that made more sense: if you got lost, you’d be stuck outside all night in the cold, and there wasn’t much of a way to get back up the mountain….

    Clarity is good.

Anyway, Lauren and I were both completely exhausted, so we ended up going really slowly the whole time. But despite our fatigue, we had a great time and really loved the trail section. Jay is a very cool mountain. We can’t wait to go back with the rest of the team in one of our volume weeks!

  • Work Hard, Play Hard

Cooling down with the boys after a Classic Sprint Simulation 4*3min All Out.
The Boys and Girls Club is closed for staff in-service these past two weeks. I have taken advantage of this ‘vacation’ time between Summer and Fall to train hard. My days have been increasingly busy and it was nice to be at home in Hayward and enjoy some good recovery between sessions. One night the mercury dipped to 33 degrees. The colors are changing and Fall has arrived.
    Weight Vest Strength
Our next training camp is in Lake Placid, NY at the US Olympic Training Center in 11 days. I have found that it is important for me to take some time to recover after hard training camps. This weekend I have been enjoying spending some time down in the Twin Cities with my girlfriend.
Cherry and Spoon at the Walker Art Museum
Caitlin and I have been having a great time in Minneapolis enjoying some creative dates. We kicked things off by cutting each others hair. This might make many people nervous but check out the picture above, I think we both did a pretty nice job. There are a lot of things you can do that cost very little but are still a lot of fun.
Yesterday while at the local library we came across the Museum Adventure Pass Program and got free tickets to The Works: Hands on Minds on Museum. We played with gears, mirrors, lasers, robots, pulleys and more. Everyone at The Club would have loved it.

One of our friends, Audrey, had told us about how you can check out tickets to local museums at the Library. This is awesome. With your library card you can check out two adult tickets to a museum/organization which are good for 1 visit and can be used up to 7 days past the checkout date. Who wants to go on a free trip to the zoo? There are plenty of cool places to check out in the Twin Cities.

  • West Side McKenzie

Some days, training is easy. Everything about the day (the workout, weather, location, energy) comes together and training is not work, it’s just enjoyment. Those are the good days, and yesterday was one of them.

We rollerskied the west side of McKenzie Pass, which is something I’ve wanted to since I moved to Bend, but hadn’t managed to. Partly this is because the road was closed for the last two summers, and partly because the logistics are a bit challenging. We started at the junction of 242 and 126, which an hour and a half from Bend. From there, the climb (on 242) to the Dee Wright Observatory is 22 miles and something like 3700’ vertical. Time issues aside, the descent is twisty enough that it probably wouldn’t be a ton of fun to ski down. It’s definitely a ski where having someone drive the car to the top is a nice touch – the top is also a lot closer to Bend, so the drive home is a bit shorter.

Rollerskiing aside, McKenzie Pass is a pretty special road. Torin talked about it a little bit earlier this summer after our bike ride, but in case you missed that (or don’t feel like reading), I will indulge myself and give a description of what we saw yesterday. We started around 1700’ in the dense (mossy) forests of the western slope of the Cascades. The road is narrow (no bike lanes or shoulders) and windy, which makes it feel a lot more like the roads I like back east than the standard Bend highways (which are wide, straight and subject to the beating sun – they also have nice bike lanes). It was cool yesterday morning, and the road was covered in dew. For at least the first hour, we were skiing through the mist rising off the road. Around every other corner the sun streamed through the mist to create walls of mist I could not see through. If I’d had a camera, I would have stopped and taken a picture. The road climbs like this for 3000’ (and 15 miles) until it plateaus into a mixture of grass and scrubby trees. The last 7 miles are pretty mellow, but they roll into the lava flow and the views become spectacular.

  • Huskies

I’m finally getting back in the groove after the trip Down Under.  Sleeping well with a full training load.  The Michigan Tech team came down to Hayward for a weekend of training in God’s Country.  We all got out for a skate speed workout in the rain this morning.  It was cool to have a big crew of new athletes to train with and fun to get some over-speed going on the roller skis.

  • Intensity in Ten Cities…

This morning we completed the second of four intensity sessions for our seven-day camp here in Sun Valley. Given our focus so far this summer on strength and aerobic base training, these sessions have been a unique challenge for us; it’s been great to put the hammer down alongside the USST and Sun Valley ODT guys. Yesterday we had a skate sprint simulation – four time trials to represent the qualifier, quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals. Because of the narrow roadway we had to run the heats individually with 15 second intervals, which greatly intensified the effort of each one. For my sake, I definitely took the first one out too hard; focused on wanting to make a solid standing I probably burned a majority of my ATP stores in the long climb in the qualifier. After that it became a matter of holding on each time. We had 40min rest after the qualifier, 30min after the quarters, and 15min after the semis. Needless to say I was fried at the end.br /br /Today’s workout was a different story. The plan was 5x3min double pole, level 4. The course was a gradual uphill grade through a subdivision and given the width of the road, all the guys were able to ski at the same time, making for a fun pack of about 15 athletes hammering along together. My plan today was to be a lot more conservative through the first several intervals and then, provided I felt good during the last one, give a little bit more to open it up.br /br /Tomorrow’s a 3hr OD run then we have 36hrs off before Tuesday’s 3.3km skate prologue in the evening, and Wednesday morning’s 10K classic TT. Recover right, keep on moving. Stay tuned!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2910103639238326543-769771014655102937?l=methowolympicdevelopment.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

“Poppa said ‘Son you’re going to drive me to drinking if you don’t stop driving that hotrod Lincoln.”‘

I rolled into Sun Valley for a little mix in the training scene. I had to visit my friend Max, who has just begun to call the Wood River Valley home. Heading into the drive I ran into Max and this sweet ’63 Lincoln. The old school Continentals have always had a certain appeal. I couldn’t resist getting behind the wheel of this 4,500 pound beauty of Detroit chrome, steel, suicide-door style and big block muscle.

  • Week In Review: Friday Sep 10th

My real job is quickly approaching again as we move into fall.  I’ve stockpiled plenty of material, but things will inevitably slow down a bit.  I also have a few big projects on my plate related to Statistical Skier that I’ll be talking more about in the next week or two, so I have plenty to keep me busy.  As for this past week,

    • With the Vuelta a España in full swing I slapped together some of the bump charts like I did for the Tour de France.
    • Since there’s been a fair bit of hand-wringing in the Norwegian press over the last few years about their men’s distance skiers, I thought I’d take a look at how they’ve actually fared over the last 18 years relative to everyone else.
    • Another diversion with some non-skiing data this week, looking at some triathlon data to see whether we can glean any strategy lessons from the data.
    • We’re almost done (I think) with the retiring skiers, this week recapping the career of biathlete Sandrine Bailly.

  • Clean and Fit in Minocqua

On Wednesday, the CXC Elite squad made our annual pilgrimage to Kozeluh Family Dentistry in Minocqua.  As athletes on a budget with minimal health insurance, Dr Dave Kozeluh’s sponsorship of the CXC Team is perhaps the best sponsor we’ve got.  He cleans our teeth and keeps our smiles bright for when we stand on top of the podium.  If you live near Minocqua and are looking for a great dentist that supports skiing, be sure to give Dr Koz a call.

In return for the clean teeth, the CXC Team athletes hosted a roller ski clinic at Premier Physical Wellness in Minocqua for local skiers of all abilities.  Dr Jim Mullen always helps us draw a big crowd.  Coach Gus Keading set up a challenging obstacle course, similar to the ones that we practice on regularly.

Wayne Fish, father of legend Bryan Fish, tests out his balance and his new hip while skiing backwards through the obstacle course

Will has fun showing off his skills on the course

    Resistance training

Gus set up three stations to work on various aspects of skiing: Gregg led the plyometric station, teaching the basics of the “V2 Hop Skate.”  Karl led the power station, working on resistance training.  Jenny helped work on balance, having contests to see how far skiers could balance on one ski.

Jenny Bender helped Tim prepare for the Birkie

The highlight of the clinic was Pam Schoville’s Apple Bars and Rice Krispie Treats.  She wanted to make sure that Dr Koz stayed in business, so she brought some extra sugary snacks to share with the group.  What a treat!

  • Mountain Bike WCH’s

Just back from a great weekend up at Mt. Sainte Anne, Quebec. The best of the best mountain bikers from all over the world were there competing in a variety of events from cross-country to downhill, 4-cross, and trials.

Willow Koerber on her way to a bronze medal!

A large group of us camped just minutes from the venue and spent the majority of our days, riding some killer single track, testing out some of the new gear for 2011, and of course cheering on the good ol’ Red, White, and Blue at just about every event!

Some of the highlights included watching Elite Women’s x-c racers Willow Koerber and Heather Irmiger finish 3rd and 6th, the 4-cross (kind of like skier-cross, but on bikes) finals at night under the lights, and a ride with Team Speicalized where the “Captain” and 1990 World Champion Ned Overand joined us along with 2008 World Champion Christoph Sauser of Switzerland, 3rd place in 2010 Burry Stander of South Africa, and U.S. National Champion Todd Wells also joined the ride.

This was a good break from our normal training regiment and a good re-charge for everyone as we head into our next training block. Now back home, fall is in the air, and it’s back to work!!
