  • D2R2 – One of the hardes century rides around

Sometimes you hear about a special hike, cook bike route, or just plain cool event and you think to yourself, “I have to do that”. The Biathlon Team heard about D2R2 through some local riders and we thought that this was one of those “I have to do that” events! Started as a fundraiser for a local Land Trust company called the Franklin Land Trust, the D2R2 has grown year after year, even after riders take a beating for no less than 8 hours as they cover the tough roads and climbs.

There are three rides, a 180km, 100km, and 50km. The 180km along boasts, 16,000ft of total climbing, over 70% on dirt roads, a few climbs nearly 2 miles long, with a few reaching between 25-27% grade. Last year one old fella was asked before Ambrosia Rd. (.6 miles and 27% up loose gravel) if anyone had made it up. He replied back, “I haven’t seen anyone make it up this road since I was a boy”! Patten Hill was another 25% grade road, this time on pavement for half a mile before it continued up for another 1.5 miles on loose gravel that was supposedly a road.

But the ride was more than just a “gut check” training ride. This route and region proved to be some of New England’s finest. The entire way we rode along beautiful streams and rivers, up and over passes with some really awesome views, and around some farms that made you want to quit your day job just to go and work on them. The local volumteers were engaging and really excited to have us all there. This may need to become an annual tradition!

    Who did it?
180km – Gary, Seth, Tracy, Mark Rossignol, Matt Michaud and Taylor
100km – Grace, Katrina, Andrea, and Corrine

  • Sugarloaf Camp

Just finished up a great week of training in Sugarloaf last week. After a big intensity week in Jericho it was a welcome change to hang out in the Western Maine mountains and put in some easy volume with our X-C Team. Fall was in the air with some really nice evenings where you welcomed the warmth of an extra blanket on your bed. We only took out the rollerski for a couple workouts, otherwise we were running and hiking up different mountain ridges, exploring the region on bike, bounding up the famous ski hill, and we even got in some skeet shooting! Thanks to the folks at the Carabassett Vallley Academy for putting us up and fueling us so well!

  • Stationary

My new friend-The Concept 2 double pole machine.

I’m slowly recovering from my injury, but my limited range of motion and inability to do any lateral movement has made this week a pretty low one for training. While that was not in the plan, it has worked out fine for me to have a bit of down time. The one big problem is that I’m starting to go a little stir crazy. I’ve read one and a half books in the last week, and gotten lots of non-training things done, but not being able to go out and rollerski, run or bike has been hard. Luckily, this weekend I was cleared to do some light biking and double poling, with one caveat-all my activities have been stationary training. In order to keep my knee stable and not have any worry of re-injuring it, I must start with stationary activities, before adding outside elements into the mix. So, the stationary bike, the double pole machine, and I have been getting to know each other well. It’s not the most exciting training, it is training, and has been keeping me occupied. Even so, hopefully by this time next week, I’ll be back to business as usual!

    Training!

This 39 mile trail links the towns of Keene, Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Lake Clear and Paul Smiths with the mission of promoting skiing in the Tri-Lakes area. Its unique name is in honor of Herman “Jackrabbit” Johannsen, who was one of the many influential Norwegians to introduce nordic skiing and ski jumping to the US and Canada. Jackrabbit Johannsen in particular helped promote nordic skiing in Lake Placid through the Lake Placid Club just as the town began to grow as a winter sports mecca leading up to hosting the 1932 Winter Games. His advice was sought on such projects as the construction of the 1932 Olympic ski jump or as an instructor for the Lake Placid Club’s Sno Bird Ski Club while living in Lake Placid with his family and working for the logging industry in Montreal. divbr //divdivI didn’t attempt the full 39 miles of course, but instead covered the first few miles from Keene’s Rock and River lodge back up to Placid and ended at the Olympic Training Center. After the end of a long summer of training and having spent a lot of time on some of the same trails, it was invigorating to revisit a good local trail with a point to point destination. /divdivimg style=”display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k1DHbqzFvCE/THHGX6rpNFI/AAAAAAAABAg/oRqMflLkiUY/s320/IMG_1392.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508401933442430034″ //divdiv style=”text-align: center;”span class=”Apple-style-span” style=”font-size: small;”iAt the top of the pass the trails skirts along beaver ponds below high cliffs perfect for ice climbing/i/span./divdivbr //divdivI was also curious to check out this section of the trail again because on September 18th it will be my leg of theb /b

  • Week In Review: Friday August 20th

Here’s what’s been cooking this week on Statistical Skier…

    • I tried to wrap up the cross-country retirement posts, was told I forgot a few and so tacked on a post for Kristina Smigun-Vaehi.
    • I snuck in a little cycling graph, showing the riders from this year’s Giro d’Italia who dropped out along the way.
    • I took another look at men’s cross-country’s rivalry of choice, Petter Northug vs. Marcus Hellner.
    • I dug a little deeper on the topic of variability in ski racing.
    • Finally, I wrapped up a long series looking at the development patterns of skiers from different nations who’ve done well (or not so well) at World Juniors.  This last one tackled Norway.

  • Career Retrospective: Kristina Smigun-Vaehi

I can’t believe I forgot about the dominant Estonian skier Kristina Smigun-Vaehi.  For individual events (distance and sprint), her stats are amazing: three Olympic medals (2 Gold), four World Championship medals and forty-nine World Cup podiums.  106 of her 161 World Cup results were top ten finishes.  She might not have as much Olympic hardware as a few of her contemporaries, but she always seemed to be in the hunt for a medal.

Of course, Smigun ran into a spot of trouble back in 2002 I believe, testing positive for steroids but was officially “cleared” by FIS when her B sample came up clean.  Needless to say, a lot of people remained suspicious, which is par for the course when doping is involved.  In any case, let’s take a look back at her career, distance races first:

As you can see from this mass of orange dots, being a super-fast skier from a nation with a tiny ski team means you get lots and lots of World Cup starts for many, many years.  Smigun made a big jump in 1998-1999, but her breakthrough season was probably the next one.  Interestingly, the 2000-2001 season stands out a bit as an odd one for her.  She had some solid races early in the season but then had a pretty terrible World Championships and then didn’t really race beyond February.

The big gap is from a break she took to get married and have a child, I believe.

    How about a technique preference?

Another skating specialist, although it’s interesting to me that it didn’t really manifest itself until she got really fast after 1999 or so.  And even then, it’s not overwhelming.

How about sprinting?  Smigun sprinted, but not a ton:

She had some early success back in the paleolithic era of sprinting, but clearly didn’t not focus on these events, particularly after the format settled down to the one we’re familiar with now.
