  • Century Ride

The weather Gods were nice to us today for our century ride. The clouds cleared and we had a beautiful day! These picture are a bit out of order, but…I’m too tired to fix them 🙂
100 mile group #1 (missing Liz)
100 km group (they started at mile 35 in Middletown Springs).
    100 mile group #2 (started 15 minutes after group 1..passed them at 50 miles…)
Cruising up rte 7 north of Manchester.
    ditto
    Climbing into Danby 4 corners.
    Headed for Tinmouth.
    Chase group.
We picked some great back roads that wandered through the high farmlands and didn’t have much traffic.
    Rolling through Wells.
    Lunch in Salem, NY.
    Beauty school?
Heading out after lunch towards  Shushan.
    Rolling…
    Rolling…
    Rolling…
    Hallie.
Katharine, Pip and ‘Kenzie are all smiles at the end.
The guy on the left looks tired.
Charlie led the 100 km group.. Thanks!
“Kenzie and Pip work the hill.
    Cruising along.
Poppet points the way. Thanks to poppet for driving support van for the 100 km and to Lilly for driving for the 100 miler.
    No problem!
Mac hiked the Presidentials with Paddy on Monday, canoed 100+ miles with Calvin (and their dads) Tues-Friday and then ended the week with our ride…wow!
This is actually a lunch shot, 70 miles into the ride.
Thanks to Lilly and Brooke for taking pictures and to a bunch of parents for baking goodies..and to Bruce S for showing up at the finish with a bag of groceries!
Fun fact: Our group rode over 2,000 miles toady without a crash or a flat!

  • Turnagain Pass in June

It’s June, which can only mean one thing…more skiing!

Tim, Benji, and I headed to Turnagain Pass on June 2, hoping for a little more crust. We found some decent crust right from the road, but we had our sights set a little higher. We skied up to the ridge on the west side of the road (aka the snowmobile side) hoping to get into Seattle Creek. As we ascended, the snow got softer and softer. Our hope of finding crust on the other side did not materialize, but we still trudged up to the ridge and got some good views. After a few photos, we survived the rotten snow on the descent, then skied around the flats a bit before heading home. Here are Tim’s photos, and here are a couple of mine:

Not exactly crust, but not exactly a bad day out either!

Looking into Seattle Creek – Pan around or click here for a full screen version.

  • Skiers REPRESENT at Track & Field State Champs

I caught a few events at the State Championship meet this morning, which had skiers written all over it.

  • Short Ride & Undergrad Awards

Our spring century ride is scheduled for Sunday, so we did a tune-up ride this afternoon – pumping up the tires, running through the gears, making sure everything is in working order for our ride this weekend.  We kept it on the short side with a big weekend coming up and let everyone hit the showers and change before Undergraduate Awards at 5pm.  Juniors have SATs in the morning, then everyone has one more week of school left and then three days of finals!  It’s a busy time of year, but we’re finishing strong!
    Sverre and Mackenzie.
     Kate.
     Hamish.
     Anika.
     Issy & Gino.
The girls at undergrad awards: Anika, Brooke, Kate, Tess, & Mackenzie.
     Anika & Brooke.
Jamie Kingsbury (alpine women’s coach) awarding the top 3 teams from yesterday’s obstacle course relay – Mollie was on the winning team with Spencer, Sebastian, and Zach, Tyler was on the 2nd place team with Dan, Lyzee, and Whitney and Kate was on the 3rd place team with Quincy, Kasui, and George.  Pizza and ice cream for these guys next week!
For nordic awards, Matt started by recognizing our boys team as the top high school team in the country & the whole team for being named the top club in the country. Moving on to individual awards,  Gino received the Achievement Award & Koby got the Most Improved Award for the boys.
For the girls, Katharine received both the Most Improved & the Achievement Award.
Honor Roll for those complete through three quarters – Brooke & Mackenzie (sixth and third from right) made this list!
Tess (second from left) made the High Honor Roll!  Way to go!
  • All School Relay

This afternoon we did an all-school relay with the underclassmen alpine skiers, snowboarders, & freestyle skiers on our obstacle course.  The alpine team has been hard at work adding new elements to our obstacle course (like the monkey bars and the balance beams, below) in addition to some of the old elements – rock wall, mud run, tires, etc. – so it was our first go at the new course.
Teams of 4-5 athletes (mixed gender/mixed disciplines) completed 8 laps total – 4 laps running through the obstacle course and 4 laps running around the 1k woodchip trail.  Below are lots of photos (thanks to Pete Davis for a few of them!) of athletes from all our teams:

  • First jumps of the year!

This week we have started jumping for the summer. Our main goal for our team is to get our level of jumping up to a consistantly higher level!
One way to get better is to start at the bottom and work on the basics! I feel like we have already started in the right direction! I am havin a blast as we started out on the k20 and been jumping in cross country suits!

This weekend I am doing another bike race! This will be 3 races in two day and I feel I should get enough points to get my upgrade to cat 2 and race with much stronger riders!

After that we will be heading to Steamboat for a quick camp on the fabulous k68 in my home town!!!

    Tune back later!

  • Canadians in the Giro d’Italia

On final note about the Giro. It’s only three years worth, but I thought it might be interesting to take a look at how Canadians have fared in the Giro (again, only since 2010):

I am back home in Lake Placid now after an incredible training camp in Bend, Oregon. I had only been to Bend once before and that was 12 years ago, but I remembered it being a great place to train. … Continue reading

  • Burlington Marathon Skier Sightings!

It was a busy holiday weekend in Burlington! The Vermont City Marathon & relay took place on Sunday, so there were lots of festivities surrounding that event. The total participation amounts to something like 8000-9000 folks. I was lucky to take part in a 5-person relay along as the NENSA team along with Abby Weissman (NENSA), Matt Trueheart (Middlebury High School coach), Sarah Dominick (MWSC athlete/coach), and Jake Whitcomb (former Middlebury College skier). Even with a 10-15 minute snafu, we still managed 9th in our division (out of 493) with a 3:13 time!

On Monday morning we got a group of Mansfield Nordic Club athletes together for holiday training in Jericho. After some juggling and warmup, we went through our 8x 30″ legspeeds on the track. We even put a few hurdles on the track and Emma Hamilton and Anna Franceshetti showed us just how smooth it is possible to get over ’em. The boys and I were probably jumping 10″ above the hurdle, and our lack of flexibility made it look more like a bucking bronco than anything.

Henry, Ethan, Amy, Tatum, and Emma kickin’ it

We then did an intro to spenst (I’m sore) and finished with our first few minutes of rollerskiing this season. I’m keeping the focus on fun and skills, so all we did was play some games, figure-8’s, and long-glide/slalom type drills.

“Kill the Carrier”. Just kidding – “keep away”

The full list of skiers that I saw at the marathon:

    1. Callie Braun – CVU / MNC
    2. Sam Longenbach – CVU /MNC
    3. Emmett Peterson – CVU / MNC
    4. Sienna Searles – CVU / MNC / St Lawrence
    5. Anna Franceshetti CVU / MNC
    6. Sean Delaney – CVU / MNC
    7. Eli Enman – Sleepy Hollow / VTXC / MNC / CVU
    8. Sheldon Miller Craftsbury
    9. Erica Lustgarten – mother of Midd / St Lawrence
    10. Kort Longenbach – father of CVU / MNC
    11. Jared Supple – Colby
    12. Liz Hollenbach – NWVT
    13. Eric Barker – Coach @ MMUHS
    14. Will Sweetser – MaineWSC
    15. Sarah Waterman – Coach @ MMUHS
    16. Paul Allison – MNC Coach (2:36!!!)

…I’m sure there were lots more!

  • Memorial Day Bike

We had a beautiful day for our bike. Everyone did 50-55 miles and climbed a couple of good hills.
We started from Londonderry, up through Weston.
    ….then headed up Mt Holly.
    The geese honked their encouragement.
    Up the hill through Belmont.
Luckily, the girls didn’t see the sign.
Ludlow food and “change Ginos tire” stop.
Back on the road to Chester.
Team “seek and destroy” was about to zip past the lead group when Tess flatted.

We needed a break anyways! From Chester it was back up to Londonderry with a choice of staying on rte 11 or going over the Andover hill.
We have not been biking too much this spring so this was our training ride for our 100 miler which is planned for next Sunday. Everyone did well and most of us are looking forward to next weekend.
Thanks to Lilly for driving a support van and taking pictures!

  • Spring Training, Catch Up

    Picture

Hey Everyone, Sorry for the long delay in posts. After a long season but very successful season, I completely checked out and took some time to hang out with friends to relax before training started again!

These last couple months, we have been hard at work with training. Besides training I have started school at Westminster College down in Salt Lake City. Along with school, I found an apartment with a couple of my new teammates Adam Loomis and Michael Ward.

So far training is going very well for myself. After our couple week break from the season, we started off with testing and physicals to make sure we didn’t loose to much from the off-season. My main source of training has come from the bicycle. Again like last year, I am racing for Colesport and trying to get my worth out of races. Racing is going very well, and I am very close to getting my upgrade to Cat 2. If I get that level, I will soon get to race with professionally titled riders.

Starting this week we will start slowly progressing in to jumping and taking our first jumps of the summer. We may be starting on the k2o in Park City, but getting back to the basics is sometimes a very good idea. My MAIN focus will be on jumping. I know I am a strong skier, so the closer to the front of the race I start, the better things will be for me.

Stay tuned! Many more races and My first time trial tomorrow for skiing!

  • The Bounty of Bend

What do skiing, mountain biking, sunburns, snowstorms, rainbows and lots of roundabouts all have in common?  They can all be found in Bend, Oregon in the month of May.

  • Notes on Spring

The spring has flown by, it seems like just a couple weeks ago that we were racing in Quebec and the world was melting around us. Those weeks of relaxing and no structured training gave everyone a chance to relax and catch up on some of the things we had been neglecting, i.e. school work, […]

  • Giro d’Italia: After Stage 18

Here’s the state of things, team-by-team after yesterday’s Stage 18:

One thing to note (that you can’t quite see in this graph) is that this year’s course has caused slightly more of a spread in the field than the previous two.
