Breaking through for the first time in what seems like weeks, the sun graced the athletes in Torsby, Sweden for the second day of opening competition. br /br /With strong anticipation of her first international start, Andrea Mayo led the U.S. Women with a 57th place. Hitting 14 of 20, Mayo paced the young group of ladies, all of whom are racing internationally for the first time. “I had so much fun out there today”, stated Mayo afterwards. “This was the eye opener that I was looking for. There are so many girls here who can ski really fast and shoot really well.” br /

No Quitting
I met Dan Bulkley when he was 53 years old. I was dating his daughter and we were both teaching skiing at Mt Ashland in southern Oregon. Dan was the track and cross country running coach at Southern Oregon College and he was director of the PE ski program at the college. One day in May he said he was going for a run and did I want to go along. I was 23. In a short 5 mile run he pounded me into the pavement and I came limping home long after he did.br /br /I married his daughter, Dani and then really got to know Dan. Now, at age 92 he is my assistant when I go to West Yellowstone Ski Festival to represent SOLDA ski wax. He skis for a while then mans my table so that I can get in some skiing.br /br /Check out this article in the Ashland Daily Tidings from this year. Freestyle sprints start this afternoon at 15.00h local time (= 08.00h EST). Heats for gals are between 16.00h – 16.30h, and boys are between 16.30 – 17.00h. It looks like today may be the warmest day of the week thus far: temps should be around 0* to +4* F, at race start (then dropping!).

Another day
The past couple of days have been a blur. It’s been overwhelming, and thrilling, to receive so much attention from friends, coaches, teachers, professors, fans, and even people I’ve never met. Some highlights include inquiries as to when I’ll be getting an Olympic rings tattoo (never), a poem from Gus Kaeding (not appropriate for mass media), and a souvenir request (for the Jamaican Bobsled!). I look forward to getting in touch with each of you as the time becomes available.

Believe it or not, the training doesn’t stop once the selection happens. The morning after the announcement, I was back on the trail hammering out one of the hardest interval sessions of the year–albeit with a little bit of extra motivation.
One of the highlights of today was catching up with my former Middlebury teammates Jake Whitcomb and Jenny Hamilton. Jake is in town for the Outdoor Retail Show in Salt Lake City and took the morning off to go for a ski. Jenny is coaching the Jackson Hole Nordic team and is in town for the Super JOQ (over 650 junior skiers registered!) at Soldier Hollow this weekend.

Jenny reminded me that just 8 years ago, we were cruising around the Soldier Hollow trails as forerunners for the 2002 Olympics. Pretty sweet.

Good days and Bad days…
After Tuesday’s sprint I was riding a pretty good high but that kind of fell apart today after a not so hot 10km classic race. The 3 lap course was insanely hard with huge climbs and fast downhills and I felt very flat. My tempo was low and my body felt heavy. I started out at a slow pace and kind of slowed down even more as the race went on. The new snow also made waxing tricky which didn’t help. But you have to have a few bad races in the mix to really appreciate the good ones! I know I can pull it all back together to have a much better race on Saturday during the 15km pursuit. Noah Hoffman was the top American today with a 20th place finish and Becca Rorabaugh and Rosie Brennan both notched top 30 finishes in a competitive field!

U23 Classic Race
Today was the U23’s turn to rev it up. New snow and a tough course made it a demanding day. We had solid, but not spectacular results. Everyone gave it their all, but in this competition, you have to be spot on to get top results.br /The fresh snow made kicking a bit tricky. It was important to have a good pair of soft snow skis and to pace yourself on the hilly course. For those of you familiar with Soldier Hollow, think of the last big hill. There is a hill the same size on this course and another just a hair smaller…and… you need to do them both every lap (3 for girls, 4 for boys today). Tough course, you need to ski smooth and strong..the Russians were the best today.
