Leaving Canmore’s Paradise at O’Dark Hundred
Pre- Race; receiving race instructions from the “Institute” and while Simultaneously deriving Unfathomable Mental, Physical, Social, and Psychic Euphoria from watching Tim Burke REPEADETLY make the European’s and the “Grown” Men who coach them cry.
Chasing the Montana Mountain Man Dan Campbell(Wouldn’t it have been awesome to actually finish on the summit of one of those peaks?)
Dan and I passing some junior racer’s on our last loop. Notice the “Steam” coming off all of us.
Canmore Nordic Center did it. They made 2 separate race loops. Although it wasn’t the exact loop that I lusted for, the 3.3 km loop there is a gas. They did an excellent job. Hafsås’s Chånces
Fresh off his surprising win in the 15km freestyle race at Beitostølen, the Norwegian biathlete Ronny Andre Hafsås has stated a desire to ski – and win – the same race at the Olympics. Win!
This season so far has felt like watching the first week of the Tour de France. Waiting for the mountains. Today we finally got to go uphill. It has been pretty frustrating over the last ten days of racing on flat courses in a sport of hills and I finally got my chance and won! It was great to reassure myself that I am fit before we head to Silver Star, BC to race on their World Cup courses next weekend against the Canadians in their winner take all Olympic qualifier.
This week they have been calling for cold (-20 F) weather today. Fortunately it stayed above zero and after the foot of snow yesterday that fell yesterday set up nicely and it was just a day of good hard fast classic skiing. Turned out a good day for the APU crew. We got both wins (Holly Brooks won for the ladies) and most everyone in the top 10 and 15. Pretty quick turnaround today as we are already starting to pack up to head out early tomorrow morning for the two day drive to Canada.

City Sprints
This weekend was a weekend of City Sprints, with the World Cup skiers flying around the streets of Dusseldorf, Germany, and the Continental Cup skiers ripping around Lindley Park in Bozeman. City Sprints are always a blast because the courses are fast and there are a lot of spectators lining the course. This weekend was no exception. We had excellent mid-winter conditions with some great fans cheering on the racers in Bozeman today. Simi Hamilton, one of my former college teammates, laid down the hammer in the qualifier and posted a solid time. Gus missed qualifying for the heats by .01 seconds. That’s close even in an alpine race. He volunteered to be our chauffeur and brought our team back to the hotel for a quick lunch and hot shower before heading back to Lindley for the afternoon heats. Bozeman got about 3″ of fresh snow last night, but the groomers from BSF did an awesome job making the track firm and fast. The volunteers also kept the heats running right on schedule, which is not something to be taken for granted when racers are standing around in race suits waiting to start. It was another solid day for CXC with most of our athletes making the heats and moving on into the finals. Thanks to Fish and Igor for their hard work, especially re-waxing with the variable conditions this morning. Looking forward to a long distance ski tomorrow, putting in some volume while the rest of the crew hammers out one of the more fun classic courses I’ve seen in a while at Bohart Ranch. No pictures from the day yet, but I look forward to posting some as they become available.
We’re off to Silver Star after the races tomorrow, heading back to Canada. Might be a day or two before the next update, so stay tuned. We’ll definitely be up there in time to watch the big game at Lambeau on Monday Night.
