I’m 26 and was born and raised in Canmore, Alberta, where I still live as the Canadian National Ski Team is based there. I started skiing at the age of 1 at with my parents at the Canmore Nordic Center and have been racing since I was 12. I’m stoked to keep you updated on my Olympic journey as these next few months promise to be extremely exciting for Canadians everywhere as things continue to ramp up for the home Games.
I’ve been away from home for a month already with stops in Austria, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Finland. I’ve procured prototype new ski boots, raced some World Cups, fought piranhas and my coach severely broke his hip. Ok, everything except the piranhas… but the way some of these hard-core Euros race my odds might be better against the omnivorous freshwater fish. Just kidding!
This week I’ll be training in Livigno, Italy and as I look out the window here at Helsinki airport I’m really looking forward to seeing the sun after 3 weeks in Northern Scandinavia. Italy is one of my favorite places to travel and over the past 10 years of ski racing internationally I’ve developed good friendships with the Italian racers and even picked up some of their beautiful language. It’s going to be a great week of training in Italy and racing in Germany on the weekend in a World Cup sprint along the Rhine river in the city of Dusseldorf. Snow is trucked in from a nearby indoor ski hill and the cheers of fans who line the course 10 deep create quite the atmosphere.

Skiing at Foret
We drove up to Stoneham, Quebec yesterday hoping for some skiing. There was only about 1 inch of wet snow when we arrived here and this morning we were greeted with a steady rain. We took a short jog and did a little leg strength, then returned to our houses for some study time.br /After an early lunch, we drove up to Foret. Luckily Foret is just far enough north to have recieved some wet snow from this storm. Here are some pictures from our ski. We skied on the river trail, it was a bit scratchy, but not too bad. We were able to ski 4-5 kms down and back and after a nice warm up, we worked on some no pole skiing and balance. It was great to get back on skis for a couple of hours!br /The upper trails have more snow and the forecast is calling for colder temperatures, so we should be ok. Cold and Dry in West Yellowstone
Being a Midwesterner, I’m not used to the dry weather in the West. There are definite advantages to the dry air, like being able to forget wet ski clothes in a backpack and still have them be dry when you’re ready to work out in the afternoon. One of the disadvantages is that it seems to really dry out my throat and sinuses. I’ve been trying all the tricks in the book to help get rid of that: taking steamy showers, drinking warm tea, and laying a wet towel over the heater in my motel room. Those remedies all seem to be working. In fact, when I was leaving my room this morning, my hand stuck to the doorknob. While I was waiting for the knob to thaw so I could remove my hand, I realized two things: 1. there is plenty of humidity in the room and 2. it’s going to be really cold outside.
Sure enough, it was -22 F. Perfect. Got to try out my new Darth Vader mask by Air Trim. The classic skiing was perfect with fresh, solid tracks, albeit a little on the slow side.
Of course, you can’t wear a mask like that and not have a little fun with it! The mask really warms up the air so that when you breathe, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as cold as -22 F. It also helped take a lot of sting out of the dry air.

We’re packing up this morning and heading north to Bozeman shortly. Racing resumes this weekend with a Skate Sprint on Saturday at Lindley Park in Bozeman and a 15km Classic at Bohart Ranch on Sunday.

Water Vaporization? Snowmaking?
People with common(MEN) sense would wait until the sun did it’s thing. It was minus 22 deg C about -8F. The water from the snow guns was just about making 100% Vapor. We went and did Biathlon training. Lucky I had TOKO Thermo’s and Hotronics.What Fun.Time to break out the tried and true, HF BLUE with Rotocorked Jetstream Blue Bloc.The Go to Wax!Hopeful that the snow making guru’s from the Canmore Nordic Center will cover the real 3.3km course for Saturday.
