  • Temporary Hiatus

For those wondering why this blog has gone dead and look like it hasn’t been maintained, it’s simply because this blogger doesn’t have the time. I am travelling in Asia so there won’t be any posts from this blog for the start of the season or the first four World Cup weekends. However, if all goes to plan I will be back for predictions and reviews of the races starting with the Rogla World Cup on December 19th and 20th. In the time being, hop on over to the Nordic Commentary Project for some great predictions and insight on the toughest World Cup circuit in the world…IMO.

    Til Then.

  • Nordic skating on Duck Flats

Today, Tim and I explored the Duck Flats area at the head of Knik Arm. I’d heard that the skating there last year was phenomenal. Since it hasn’t been very cold this fall, we were concerned that we might be a little too early. But since nordic skating has such a short window of time, we decided to give it a go anyway.

  • Skiing in Snow

We’ve been skiing on snow for a week now, but today was the first day that we were able to ski in snow.

Good thing, too.  I’ve heard “Sewer up!” on group road rides, but never on a ski. . .

  • 10km Time Trial

This morning I joined the NMU ski team for a 10km skate time trial. I woke up way too early for a 10am start- I was just ready for it and a little nervous. I was feeling good on my warm up and when I did the part of my warm up when I do a few minutes of level 3 and a couple speeds I got even more excited. My legs felt good considering I have had quite a few intervals in the last week.

The guys 15km started a minute before we did. Right off the start Laura Dewitt, Christina Gillis, Monica Markvardsen and I took off but by the first hill, about a kilometer into the course, Laura and I had a bit of a gap on third place. Over the next 7km Laura and I put a bigger gap on the field. We came through the halfway point in 17 minutes. Over the next 3km Laura and I were still together but at the bottom of the last big climb I found another gear and pushed it hard to the finish. The second half of the race was about 40 seconds faster than the first! Laura came in second, Gillis third, Monica 4th and Ingrid Fjeldheim a close 4th.

It was a sprint to the finish for the guys with Kevin Cutts in first, Gus Keading second, Chris Bowler third, Matt Weier fourth and Tim Cook fifth and Tom Mcfadden sixth. It was a small field of guys today due to a few people just getting over being sick.

It was a fun, hard day that made me even more excited to get on snow.

  • SHIFTING GEARS

    There are sports within skiing – alpine, telemark, cross-country, et cetera.span style=”” /spanWithin cross-country skiing, there are techniques – classic and skate.span style=”” /spanDissect the cross-country skate technique and you find gears – V1, V2, etc.span style=””br /br //span p class=”MsoNormal”I was recently asked how V2 alternate fit in with the other gears.span style=”” /spanI believe the best way to relay my understanding is through both showing and telling (read and watch on):/pp class=”MsoNormal”br //p p class=”MsoNormal”V1 is a very powerful gear but not necessarily one that can be maintained at high speeds (sort of like first gear on a car); it is good for starting, getting up to speed, power, steep climbs, et cetera.span style=””br //span/pp class=”MsoNormal”span style=””br //span/p p class=”MsoNormal”V2 comes next (second gear) and is still very powerful but can be used at a higher speed.span style=”” /spanIn other words, once you get up to speed (or the terrain changes) to propel you past the efficiency of V1, you switch to V2./pp class=”MsoNormal”br //p p class=”MsoNormal”When you have reached maximum speed with V2, V2 alternate (3suprd/sup gear) is the next shift.span style=”” /spanV2 alternate still has a powerful pole-stroke but it is only on one side.span style=”” /spanThe one-sided pole allows for more glide, a strong kick and consequently a technique maintained at even higher speeds (down a hill, on a fast flat, etc) than V2 allows.span style=””br //span/pp class=”MsoNormal”br /span style=””/span !–[endif]–o:p/o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”4supth/sup gear, one of my favorites, is the tuck skate.span style=”” /spanYou can swing your arms or keep them tucked up depending on speed, wind and how comfortable you feel.span style=”” /spanIt is the technique used when you are going too fast for V2 alternate but not fast enough for a straight tuck.span style=”” /spanIt is a great technique for windy conditions, as it keeps your upper body compact while allowing a strong kick./pp class=”MsoNormal”br //p p class=”MsoNormal”A straight tuck is 5supth/sup gear./pp class=”MsoNormal”br //p div style=”text-align: center;”object height=”344″ width=”425″param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/YgmklFFTcKoamp;hl=enamp;fs=1″param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/YgmklFFTcKoamp;hl=enamp;fs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” height=”344″ width=”425″/embed/objectbr /span style=”font-size:85%;”span style=”font-style: italic;”Skate Gears – thanks for shooting Eric!/span/spanbr /br / !–[if gte mso 9]xml o:documentproperties o:templateNormal/o:Template o:revision0/o:Revision o:totaltime0/o:TotalTime o:pages1/o:Pages o:words83/o:Words o:characters476/o:Characters o:lines3/o:Lines o:paragraphs1/o:Paragraphs o:characterswithspaces584/o:CharactersWithSpaces o:version11.1282/o:Version /o:DocumentProperties o:officedocumentsettings o:allowpng/ /o:OfficeDocumentSettings /xml![endif]–!–[if gte mso 9]xml w:worddocument w:zoom0/w:Zoom w:donotshowrevisions/ w:donotprintrevisions/ w:displayhorizontaldrawinggridevery0/w:DisplayHorizontalDrawingGridEvery w:displayverticaldrawinggridevery0/w:DisplayVerticalDrawingGridEvery w:usemarginsfordrawinggridorigin/ /w:WordDocument /xml![endif]– div style=”text-align: left;”style !– /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:”Times New Roman”; panose-1:0 2 2 6 3 5 4 5 2 3; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:auto; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:50331648 0 0 0 1 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:””; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”;} table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-parent:””; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} — /style !–StartFragment– p class=”MsoNormal”Many times it is NOT necessary to go through all of the gears; when driving a car, it is called speed shifting.span style=”” /spanWhile skiing, you might shift from V2 into a tuck, which skips V2 alt. and the tuck-skate.span style=”” /spanIn an extreme case, you might be hammering over the crest of a hill in V1 and go straight into a tuck for a steep downhill (1supst/sup to 5supth/sup gear shift)./pp class=”MsoNormal”br /span style=”” /span/p p class=”MsoNormal”!–[if !supportEmptyParas]– !–[endif]–o:p/o:p/p p class=”MsoNormal”I think the most common technique to leave out is the tuck-skate (4supth/sup gear).span style=”” /spanIt is one of my favorite styles but I don’t see it used often.span style=”” /spanMaybe folks like to recover their legs on the downhill…span style=””? • Cranking the Intensity

The past two weeks have been chalked full of intensity! Racing season is less than three weeks away and it is time to get fast! • Silver Star at a Glance

Today was a relaxing rest day on the mountain.  Mostly catching up on business that’s been put off in favor of skiing this week.  Brayton and Marshall made the cut for this week’s Silver Star Nordic Update.  I got out for a light jog before sunset and took a couple shots around town.  The building code in Silver Star states that all buildings must be painted with at least five different colors (or colours, as the case may be), which makes the town feel like a giant Candyland.   mmmm.
