  • Sherpa

My teammate, Jeremy “Sherpa” Teela, now has a blog and he has been bothering me about linking to him everyday at practice… So here it is!  Check it out for an interesting read!  www.jeremyteela.com

For those of you who are interested why Jeremy is called the “Sherpa”, he earned the name for his ability to hill climb really fast, despite sometimes carrying a little extra weight!  Sorry Jeremy, but that’s the price you pay for the link…

  • Seven Miles of Mud – Hiking to Fire Island

The Anchorage Daily News ran an article about a group of adventurers making a crossing over “danderous” mud flats to Fire Island. I had to check it out.

An example would be while driving through the quaint little village of Lake Placid I had to keep the windows closed and locked because he was screaming out what he wanted to do to every man and woman we drove by.  Even I was aghast.divAnyway one midday this Madman who stayed at my house at times and did lots of insane training. He actually helped by showing and  “learning” me how hard and intense one had to go./divdivThen I taught him./divdivSo Psycho Skier Man shows up for my second workout of the day and says I want to go for a 2 hour trail run!!  No longer!!  I say ok!  Off we go starting right from my old house near the beginning of theNorthville-Placid trail.  We went at a good level1-2 pace for 2 hours. At this point we were at the shores of Moose Pond. He smiles at me and asks “Where’s the house??”/divdivIt was awesome the look on his face as I just pointed back down the trail and with utterly no mercy.  /divdivIt was awesome watching him implode on the way home. It was only a 4 hour run with no food or water.  /divdivEi Armoa!!!/div/div/spandiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6647112093689702615-869280703948275931?l=www.jackedupoldman.com’//div

  • new roller ski route

I discovered a new roller ski route close to my house today. I was even able to ski there from home! It’s in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul, nestled between Hwy 280 and Como Ave. John Swain mentioned that he grew up there and would roller ski in the neighborhood so I thought I would check it out. It’s a small area with little traffic and good terrain so it will be a nice place to do some intervals. There are a few hills that you can’t go down, and I wouldn’t recommend skiing there if you aren’t really comfortable on skis because there are plenty of intersections to navigate, but it was fine for me. I’ll have to work out the best route for an interval, but I think it has great potential. I’m psyched!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/1572647974447867713-6802252519235555219?l=vakavaraceteam.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

In and earlier post I mentioned that the most important months for a skiers training is June, July, and August. Well Guess what?? June is GONE!!! It’s hard to believe but it’s NOW or NEVER! If you have not been training you better get your butt out the door and get something done or you will be toast!!! The R.N.R crew has been hard at work for the past month and I’m starting to noticespan class=”blsp-spelling-corrected” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_1″every ones/span fitness and span class=”blsp-spelling-corrected” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_2″confidence/span gaining on the skis. It’s not always easy to tell if the athletes are REALLY pushing themselves or just working hard. There is a big difference!!! But sometimes it is easy, Last week at the end of a hard OD session the kids where doing some uphill sprints working on there speed. I was at the top of the hill watching them come up and giving them some technique advice and some encouragement to keep the peddle down on each one. On the last one I hear a crash and look down to the bottom of the hill just in time to see reed eat it as well!!!! I love/hate to see kids or anyone eat the pavement. On one hand it means they werespan class=”blsp-spelling-error” id=”SPELLING_ERROR_3″ style=”background-color: rgb(255, 255, 0); “pushin/span hard and trying to make the gains necessary to improve there skiing. • Making it happen

Now that I’ve been in Park City for over 2 weeks, I am feeling acclimated to the altitude and it feels great!!!  I have been working with the coaches almost every day (sometimes more than once a day) and I have definately made improvements in my technique.  I’m feeling stronger, faster and more efficient than I ever have before.  (And my legs keep feeling better and better)!

  • Rolling on the Right

I recently posted a short piece on safety and rollerskiing. A reader, Dean Woodbeck, replied with his observation about rolling on the right side of the road. This is Dean’s post:br /br /”Many of the blogs and websites have repeated these roller ski rules, including to ski in the same direction as traffic. I don’t understand this. If you are skiing against traffic, as when you are walking on a roadway, you are able to see what is coming and have the opportunity to react. If a car is approaching from behind, you have no such opportunity. I can’t figure out why skiing with traffic is safer.”br /br /First, thanks Dean for reading and responding. I am happy someone is reading.br /br /Here are my observations about rollerskiing on the right. I believe that much of the reason is motorist expectations. Motorists expect slow walking pedestrians to be on the left. They expect bicycles and things that are moving faster to be on the right. The two times I have had close calls with cars were both when I was rolling on the left side moving against the flow of traffic. In both cases it is my assumption that the drivers saw me and they thought I was a walking pedestrian. In one case the driver drifted to his right directly into my path. I was going downhill fairly fast and there was also a car following me in his own lane. I was forced to the gravel and brush to my left, took about 2.5 giant steps on my rollerskis before “supermanning” into the weeds. The other time my friend and I had come onto a state highway from a side road. Since there was quite a bit of traffic and we could see my truck parked maybe 400 meters down the road, we decided to just cruise down the “breakdown lane” on our left, stop at the bottom of the hill and then cross to the parking area. It was a pretty good hill and we were going pretty fast. The problem was that there was a yard sale on the lawn of a house on our left. A car was approaching us and the driver pulled into the breakdown lane. If they saw us at all they must not have known how fast we were going. Anyway, both people in the car were looking to their right at the stuff on the yard for sale, not at us. We both moved slightly to our right and whizzed past the car which was coming to a stop. They still never looked at us as we went by. Prior to that I had been waving my arms and poles and they didn’t see this either. br /br /Motorists expect to see things moving in the right lane. Motroist closing speed is much greater if you are on the left. For the pedestrian it is easy to move off the pavement. Much harder for the rollerskier. br /br /50 states require bicycles to ride on the right. This is what the motorist will expect, things moving fast are on the right. br /br /I would welcome more discussion here. Please share your observations. It would probably be good to have us all doing the same and safest practice.br /br /Have a good one,br /br /Bertdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6589659500745667109-1622031615839224693?l=www.webskis.com%2Fwebskisblog.html’ alt=” //div

  • Camp

I just finished the first week of our three week camp here in Lake Placid.  We have a good crew of about 12 athletes here.  It’s great to have everyone together again, pushing each other in practice.  It’s also awesome to have Per, Armin and Bernd here.  These guys work nonstop in camp.  Sometimes I wonder if Per actually sleeps at camp… Having such an energetic coaching staff definitely has a huge influence on the athletes.

Max bounding intervals at Whiteface last week.

    P1030590

Walking down after the intervals on tired legs is sometimes harder than running up.

Maybe the most painful part of the day… Whiteface’s natural ice bath.

  • Working Hard (or Hardly Working)

Today is June 27th and I am on my way home after being on the road for a whole month.  Bryan and I started out our trip with a double pole clinic in Minocqua, WI, hosted by PowerBar athlete Chris Cook, then stayed in Rhinelander a few days, went to Lakeville and Marine, MN, for a CXC training camp, drove to Waukesha for a full week of high school clinics, and finished off with a HUGE clinic at the Iola Winter Sports Center.  Now I will be in Marquette for five days before our next training camp starts in Hayward, WI.  The plan is to stop in Rhinelander to do the Pow Wow day’s running race and a 4th of July celebration.  You can read about all the clinics that we put on in the past month HERE.  The photo’s below are from the CXC Youth Clinic in Marine, MN.  Photo’s from Waukesha and Iola clinics are hopefully comming soon.

Although it means a lot of travel, I really do enjoy conducting clinics.  I would like to say a big, “Thank you” to all of the people who have helped us to organize clinics and given us a place to stay while we are in the area: Mary and Bob Eloranta, Donna Hoelz, Anne Riendl, Pam and Ken Schoville, Susan Wurzer and George Kraft, Juli Lynch and Chris Ransom, Dave and Lori Landgraf, Linda Cook, and Everett Meyer.  These clinics are a great way for us to use our skills to give back to the skiing community and support ourselves as we train and race full time.  We would not be able to do it without the organizational help of someone in the area.  Thank You!
