  • 7 days down…

    IMG00116

    Well, it’s been a week since I had my knee surgery, but it definitely seemed a lot longer than that.  I’m not used to spending this much time on the couch but I am quickly becoming a professional.  I’m also becoming extremely proficient at maneuvering the electric shopping carts but I get lots of weird looks while I’m driving.  It might be because I enjoy doing donuts and keep trying to pop-a-wheelie.  Target just got new electric carts this week but they’re slower than the ones at Wal-Mart.

    Everyday the knee is feeling significantly better than the day before.  Things got much more comfortable today when I could finally stop wearing the TED hose all the time.  Not only are they incredibly uncomfortable and a pain to take on and off but they also don’t help when it’s 80 degrees outside.

    At the rate things are improving I should be off of pain killers by tomorrow afternoon which means I am moving in the right direction. It also means that I can have an adult beverage on Friday at the Twilight Criterium that will be going on downtown.

    Below are a couple of photos that I took this evening. Things are healing pretty quickly.  As soon as the holes heal up I can get in the pool and start deep water running again. It’s boring and I get strange glares from the lifeguards, but I can’t wait until I can get after it again.

  • Olympic Day June 23rd

    The world celebrates the birth of the modern Olympics on Olympic Day, June 23rd. We celebrated at ‘The Club by promoting the Olympic values and physical fitness. Tuesday was by far the hottest day of the summer so we spend most of our time indoors. We held our own track and field contests including a relay race around the gym, long jump, 50m dash, high jump, disc toss and softball toss. We talked about Chicago’s bid for the summer Olympic Games in 2016. It would be pretty cool to have the greatest world stage for sports to be just 5 hours away. I also talked about my Olympic quest in cross country skiing and the importance of sportsmanship. It is fun to be back with the kids again after being in training camps and the Pacific Northwest the past six weeksbr /br /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLGDw4IBbI/AAAAAAAAAQE/2-gWE1usljc/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+083.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLGDw4IBbI/AAAAAAAAAQE/2-gWE1usljc/s400/Olympic+Day+083.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351057075231786418″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Adolfo, Dusty, Alex, Archie, Alana, Devon, Brian, Marie, Isaiah, Betty, Elianna and Paige/spanbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ3k14rBI/AAAAAAAAAQc/pGNqy5umMuc/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+112.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ3k14rBI/AAAAAAAAAQc/pGNqy5umMuc/s400/Olympic+Day+112.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351061263889247250″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Devon, Kiera, and Adolfobr /br //spanbr //divdiv style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ3PoChgI/AAAAAAAAAQU/zcNVEVYq4WM/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+086.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ3PoChgI/AAAAAAAAAQU/zcNVEVYq4WM/s400/Olympic+Day+086.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351061258194028034″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Devon and Dimitry getting ready for the relay/spanbr /br //divdiv style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLGEBOKyJI/AAAAAAAAAQM/TaryNuIR28E/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+101.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLGEBOKyJI/AAAAAAAAAQM/TaryNuIR28E/s400/Olympic+Day+101.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351057079619209362″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Adolfo, Archie, Devon and Me/spanbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLMUcNGV0I/AAAAAAAAAQs/F5Arh4QZ7zo/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+090.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLMUcNGV0I/AAAAAAAAAQs/F5Arh4QZ7zo/s400/Olympic+Day+090.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351063958810154818″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Long Jump/spanbr //divbr /div style=”text-align: center;”a onblur=”try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}” href=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ32FQJlI/AAAAAAAAAQk/3TbzNxLmXbs/s1600-h/Olympic+Day+119.JPG”img style=”margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;” src=”http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_M9ps8F85nS0/SkLJ32FQJlI/AAAAAAAAAQk/3TbzNxLmXbs/s400/Olympic+Day+119.JPG” alt=”” id=”BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5351061268517103186″ border=”0″ //aspan style=”font-style: italic;”Hailey working on her slip and slide Limbo/spanbr //divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/8083254037538554650-2590518337657801384?l=in-the-arena-brian.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div

  • Summer time.

    Well, Summer time has officially landed; at least here in Pewaukee, WI.  Currently, it is about 94 degrees Fahrenheit with 75% humidity.  Yes, that is VERY hot!

    Maria and I are here in town staying with Bob and Mary Eloranta while we conduct high school as well as Master skier clinics this week.  We have high school clinics Monday through Friday for 1.5 hours starting at 4 p.m.  We also have a Women’s only clinic tonight from 6-8 p.m., and an open Master skier clinic on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. as well.  These clinics are a great way to give back to the area that made Maria into the elite skier that she is now.  I also enjoy doing the clinics because I spent a Summer down here working at the Bicycle Doctor and this area is great for training and has a really active and generous ski community.

    As far as my training and life has gone up until this point, I have been busy working at Farmer Q’s while home in Marquette.  I was able to sneak away for two consecutive weekends in May and race my mountain bike back in my hometown of Rhinelander at the RASTA Rally one weekend and the Crystal Lake Classic which is part of the WORS series the next.  Both races were really fun thanks to the Rhinelander area for putting on the races, and a big thanks to Wayne Fish who has pretty much single-handedly built all the amazing single track at the Camp Tesomas race venue.  I had one of my best mountain bike races at the 22 mile Crystal Lake Classic where I won my first WORS series medals for placing 3rd in the 19-29 age class.  I was having a REALLY good race until about two miles left where I blew up big time and lost about ten places overall.  I hope to keep the good bike form going this Sunday at the Superior Bike Fest up in Marquette where I will race the 24 mile mountain bike race.

    Stay tuned to find out how it goes.

    Last Thursday we did a video session with Ahvo and worked on double pole. DP has been my weekest stroke and I’ve been working on it since I started with Vakava two years ago. I went back and looked at some video from the previous two years and compared it to this years. It was amazing to see how much it has improved and shows what working with Vakava has done for me. There is no way that I could’ve made those improvements without this group. These people have not just helped me with technique, but have also given me the motivation and support to do the hard work required to improve my conditioning and strength which is needed to make the technique improvements. Thanks everybody, I couldn’t do it without you!br /br /I know others have made dramatic improvements as well. My husband has wondered what the point of a team was for an individual sport. • Benchmark WIlmington Time Trial

    div xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”pobject height=”350″ width=”425″param value=”http://youtube.com/v/j6wdRIhUHz4″ name=”movie”embed height=”350″ width=”425″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” src=”http://youtube.com/v/j6wdRIhUHz4″/embed/object/ppThis year I started using the Wilmington Time Trial Course that NENSA and NYSEF among others have been doing for the past years. It is good practice to have some benchmarks to monitor your training. It is hard to be accountable, especially for older people training mostly on their own. It is very easy to go out and just play. /ppWhich is Ok, of course in  a limited way for an off day. /ppThis Sunday less then 12 hours after completing the Whiteface Uphill Bike Race a 8 mile race up the Whiteface Mountain Highway I went for Time Trial # 2 in the pouring rain. Definitely would have enjoyed a little more rest but needed to compress Time Trial, then Running and shooting and driving 290 miles back to home base.br /This course is a good test of actual ski speed. There is some flats, gradual inclines, and a huge hill for the last mile. This hill is a very steep hill that was used in the Michael Flanagan Bike Race. br /I was actually a little slower then in the beginning of May. Hopefully the wet roads accounted for the slower time. Actually I felt better with technique and overall fitness. I will be back in July for #3 and also a to try out the top 5 miles of the Whiteface Toll Road. br //ppOf note UTube would not play my music that I put on it due to copyright infringement./p/divdiv class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6647112093689702615-7578575902973744088?l=www.jackedupoldman.com’//div

  • The SuperTour comes to the Methow!

    span style=”font-size:100%;”In a very fortuitous turn of events the Methow Valley has landed its own first ever SuperTour race, to be held in January 2010 at our FIS-homologated race course located at Liberty Bell High School. This is a spectacular opportunity for the valley and for North American athletes to experience the beauty which we live and train in every day. Moreover, it’s an ideal situation for the MOD Squad. Home course advantage and local fans…br /br /Check out Sunday’s Wenatchee World article on the race: /spanspan style=”font-size: 10pt;”
